Valve Springs: What you should know about themValve springs are a most important part of you valvetrain operation. Valve springs are responsible forproperly controlling and seating the valves atvarying RPM’s and operation conditions. Properinstallation of the recommended Crower valvesprings is critical to achieving optimum performance and trouble free operation.STOCK SPRINGSIn most cases stock valve springs do a good job forstock camshafts. When changing to a high liftCrower performance camshaft, stock springs physically won’t travel the distance your Crower high liftcamshaft requires. The spring coils stack solid andthe destructive condition called COIL BIND exists.Because the spring acts like a solid piece of metal inthis condition, broken rocker arms, bent push rods,and worn lifters and camshaft can result.Crower performance camshafts also deliverincreased RPM capability. As RPM’s increase, morevalve spring pressure is required to control thereciprocating valve train mass as it opens and closesthe valves (as RPM increase, valve train increase,similar to trying to hold onto a merry-go-round as itturns faster.) As stock springs reach their performance threshold, the condition called valve floatoccurs. The valve springs can no longer exertenough pressure to keep the lifters in contact withthe camshaft lobes, and an out-of-control situationresults. Valves begin bouncing off the valve seats,lifters slap precision cam lobes with devastatingimpacts, and pistons slam into valves that should beseated, etc. Massive and costly damage can result.HIGH PERFORMANCE VALVE SPRINGSCrower valve springs in many cases resemble stockspring but have subtle changes in material, wirediameter, outside diameter, inside diameter, and coilcount. Our engineers have taken extreme care toproperly match spring travel and pressure to accommodate your camshaft action and lift. In order toavoid coil bind, valve float and extreme damage toyour valve train, always install the recommendedCrower engineered valve spring kit with your newCrower performance camshaft.A SIMPLE CHECKAt full valve lift, your valve springs should have, atthe very least, .050” of clearance between the coil.The outer spring, inner spring, and damper springshould all be checked for proper clearance. This issimply accomplished by slipping .050” feeler gaugebetween the coils with the valve fully open.ACHIEVING CORRECT INSTALLED HEIGHTEach set of Crower valve springs comes with aninstallation card that specifies the correct installedheight for your springs. Installed height is thedistance from the spring seat on the cylinder head tothe outside spring land on the bottom of the valvespring retainer (this is the space the valve springoccupies). Achieving the recommended installedheight is imperative if the springs are to exert thepressures they were designed to deliver and properly control the valves.If the springs install too high, Crower has shimsavailable to close the space up. Or you can installone of Crower’s negative offset (domed) springretainer sets that produce the same results. (pic. 2)If the springs install too short, you can:a. Machine the cylinder head spring seatdeeper (.050” to .075” max) with theappropriate Crower spring seat cutter.or.b. Install a set of Crower positive offsetspring retainer set.or.c. Install a new set of .100” longer stemmedvalves to correct the problem.NOTE: If you don’t find a retainer that corrects yourproblem listed in our catalog, our custom retainerservice can make you a special set that will do thetrick.345672811. Stock springs can coil bind whenused with high lift performance cams.1InstalledHeight2APROPER SPRING SEATINGIn some cases Crower performance valve springsdo not seat properly on the stock spring seats.That is, they don’t seat flush/square on your cylinderheads. This is especially true when going from stocksingle springs to high performance dual or triplespring designs. The usual problem is the spring O.D.is too large for the spring seat O.D. and/or the innerspring I.D. is too small for the stock valve guide O.D.VALVE STEM OIL SEAL TO SPRING CLEARANCEBC3RightWrongWhen switching from single springs it will be necessary to install smaller diameter Crower positivesealing valve stem oil seals for proper seal-to-springclearance.
