VCCS Transfer GuideAcademic Year 2020-21This Transfer Guide is designed to assist students within the Virginia Community College System (VCCS)have a smooth transition to Radford University which includes both the Radford University Main Campusand Radford University Carilion Campus. Upon admission, all transfer students will receive an officialcourse evaluation. Non-VCCS students may use this guide as a general reference, but should rely on theofficial transfer evaluation for verification of course equivalencies.Pathways to Transfer1. Completion of a VCCS Transferable Associate DegreeIn accordance with the State Policy on Transfer (1993), students who transfer to RadfordUniversity from a Virginia Community College will have satisfied RU’s Core Curriculumrequirements if any of the following is met: the student has by the time of transfer earned an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science,or Associate of Arts and Science degree from a Virginia Community College; orthe student is able to earn such a degree by successfully completing at a VirginiaCommunity College courses remaining for the applicable associate degree concurrentlywith the first semester of enrollment at RU; orthe student will earn an applicable associate degree as a result of credit earned during hisor her first semester of enrollment at RU, up to a maximum of 10 hours.Students who have earned an Associate of General Studies will satisfy RU’s Core Curriculumrequirements if the institution awarding the degree has been approved by SCHEV as satisfyingthe State Policy on Transfer. A list of approved institutions is found at the SCHEV website. Forthose students who earned an Associate of General Studies at an institution not on the list ofapproved institutions, a course-by-course transfer credit evaluation will be performed.Students should be aware that many programs have major-specific requirements or prerequisitessatisfied through the Core Curriculum. These courses are required as part of the major.Students completing a VCCS Transferable Associate Degree may be eligible for admission underthe VCCS and Radford University Guaranteed Admission Agreement.1

2. Articulation AgreementsRadford University has partnered with VCCS and individual community colleges to createarticulation agreements. These special agreements define the way courses and degree programstransfer to Radford University and may include admission guarantees.3. Course by Course TransferThis guide lists the courses that routinely transfer from VCCS to RU. Students who have notcompleted a transferable associate degree or are entering under an articulation agreement willreceive credit on a course by course basis. Courses not listed in this guide will be evaluated aspart of the admissions process.Choosing a Program of StudyThe first step in charting your pathway to success is choosing the university and the program of studythat is right for you. Radford University offers a diverse curriculum of more than 140 undergraduate andgraduate degree programs in seven colleges: Davis College of Business and Economics, College ofEducation and Human Development, College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences, Artis College ofScience and Technology, College of Visual and Performing Arts, Waldron College of Health and HumanService, and the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Students who have not yet selected a majorare assisted by the Advising Center for Major Exploration.The second step to success is to obtain a progress sheet to your intended program of study, whichoutlines RU and RUC core curriculum and major requirements. Progress sheets are available on the CoreCurriculum Website and College Advising Centers. Use this Transfer Guide to determine RU coursenumbers and VCCS course equivalencies.The third step is to develop a plan of study that includes your coursework at the community college inpreparation for transferring to RU. This should be done in consultation with your community collegecounselor and your RU College Advising Center or your RUC Faculty Advisor and/or Program Director.Finally, pay attention to deadlines for applying, filing your FAFSA, applying for scholarships and mostimportantly, be sure to visit often and see for yourself all that RU and RUC have to offer!Transfer Guidelines and PoliciesEach year Radford University welcomes new transfer students from Virginia Community Colleges. For afull description of admissions criteria, guidelines and academic policies related to transfer students,please refer to the Office of Admissions website, contact them at admissions@radford.edu, or call 540831-5371. You will also want to refer to the Radford University Undergraduate Catalog.Transfer students should be aware of the following: To receive transfer course credit, a student must achieve a grade of “C” or higher at thecommunity college. A grade of “C-” or lower will not transfer. Transfer credits do not affect Radford University grade point averages (GPA).2

No fewer than 30 semester hours must be taken at Radford University to be eligible forgraduation.Fifty percent (50%) of the semester hours required for a major or minor must be taken atRadford University.As a minimum, 120 semester hours are required for graduation.To eligible to receive Latin Honors (e.g. cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) astudent must have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours at Radford University. Studentswhose cumulative GPA is greater than or equal to 3.50, but who do not earn 60 credit hours atRU, will graduate “With Distinction.”RU Core CurriculumRadford University is committed to the development of mature, responsible, well-educated citizens. Inaddition to acquiring a diverse body of knowledge, RU graduates will possess a love of learning and arange of intellectual skills that enable them to meet the challenges and realize the promise of living in acomplex, multicultural, and ever-changing world. The purpose of the Core Curriculum is to give studentsa foundational learning experience where students improve their ability to think, both critically andanalytically, and begin to take possession of the learning process. The Core Curriculum consists of 30 to36 semester hours divided into two key areas: University Core and College Core.Students completing a VCCS Transferable Associate Degree have satisfied Core Curriculumrequirements. It is important to note that many programs have major-specific requirements orprerequisites satisfied through the Core Curriculum. These are listed on the progress sheets underUniversity Core and College Core areas of study (e.g. mathematical sciences) and are still required aspart of the major.Students transferring course-by-course credit should, whenever possible, take courses at the communitycollege that will meet Core Curriculum and major-specific requirements and prerequisites.University Core – Core Foundations includes 3 credit hours of foundational writing (ENGL 111), 3 credithours of foundational mathematics (MATH 100, 121, or 125), and two courses of at least 3 credit hoursof writing intensive coursework. Students seeking writing intensive transfer determination shouldcontact the department which offers courses in that discipline.Virginia Community College System & Richard Bland College Transfer EquivalenciesListed on the following pages are the courses in the Virginia Community College System (pg. 4-14) andRichard Bland College (pg. 14-16) that Radford University will accept for transfer as specific disciplinecredit. Other courses, not listed in this guide, may transfer to Radford University as elective credit, ormay be re-evaluated to be considered for credit.When two VCCS course indexes are hyphenated, each course is equal to the respective course listed atRadford University. When a “ ” is between two VCCS course indexes, both courses must be taken inorder to have them equal the course at Radford University. When “or” appears, either VCCS course willequal the course at RU.3
