ACADEMIES AND SIGNATURE PROGRAMSAcademies and Signature Programs provide focused instruction together with high expectations, standardsand unparalleled opportunities for academic achievement. The following programs are available to studentscountywide at the high schools listed. Admission is by application and enrollment may be limited. Academystructure is currently under review and is subject to change.Academy programs are typically characterized by state or nationally recognized curricular programs thatrequire outside program certification and specialized teacher training or certification. Students may receivecollege credit or state or national certification for successful completion of the program. Academy programsdraw students from outside the school in which they are located. *With the exception of NJROTC at GovernorThomas Johnson High School students who are not geographically assigned to these schools are not providedtransportation.Signature programs are unique to Frederick County Public Schools, offering specialized courses at specificschool locations. Signature programs may have courses that award college credit and may not carry state ornational recognition for successful completion. ACADEMIES AND SIGNATURE PROGRAMSACADEMY FOR THE FINE ARTSOffered at Governor Thomas Johnson High School.Audition and/or portfolio required.Advanced courses in dance, music, theatre, and the visualarts are taught at a college level with an intense curriculum tochallenge and engage students. Participation in the Academyfor the Fine Arts provides students with unique academic andartistic experiences, which build upon, enhance, and advancethe skills and knowledge learned in introductory arts coursework and in performing ensembles at all high schools. Theyare prepared for the finest colleges and/or for a career in thearts or in a communications field of study.Academy students in grades 10, 11 and 12 attend Gov. ThomasJohnson High School for the first two blocks of the day andstill have the opportunity to participate in their home schoolevents. Students are provided the opportunity to gain knowledge and enrichment from field trips, concerts, plays, museumvisits, and interaction with professional artists, mentors andworkshops. Students enrolled in the academy are assisted inportfolio development along with gathering career and collegeinformation to prepare them for higher learning. Academyfor the Fine Arts graduates leave with work-readiness skills,courses, and experiences in concentrated areas of study so thatthey are ready to enter a post-secondary academic institution.INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATEACADEMYOffered at Urbana High School.This highly challenging two-year curriculum leads to a qualification that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities.The program requires study in each of six “groups.” Interestedstudents should go to www.uhsmd.org to access the IB Programbooklet and application and talk with the IB coordinator andtheir parents/guardians before deciding whether to apply. Group 1 – Language A (English) Group 2 – Language B (Second Language) Group 3 – Individuals and Societies Group 4 – Sciences Group 5 – Mathematics and Computer Science Group 6 – ArtsStudents may elect to substitute an additional course fromgroups 1-5 for the Arts (Group 6) requirement. Theory ofKnowledge is required of all IB students. Schedules for IBdiploma students are somewhat different from those of non-IBstudents. “Higher Level” and some “Standard Level” IB courseswill be scheduled over a two-year period, meeting 90 minutesevery other day for two years. IB courses are listed in Step 7under the appropriate curricular categories.LEADERSHIP PROGRAMOffered at Oakdale High School.The Oakdale High School Leadership Academy empowerstomorrow’s leaders today, by equipping students with the skillsand processes necessary to effectively lead in the dynamic worldin which we live. Students will be actively engaged in leadership coursework that emphasizes the requisite skills for 21stcentury learners – technology, communication, world perspectives, problem solving and ethical decision making. Throughcompletion of a rigorous program of academic courses, orCTE Completer Program, Student Service Learning and CivicEngagement projects, students will have opportunities to applyconcepts learned through a variety of leadership activities.The Academy is 2 years of intensive leadership studies that maybegin in the spring of sophomore or junior year.Program requirements include: Successfully meet all program prerequisites: courses withminimum grades. Completed Application. All state and FCPS requirements for graduation. Required summer reading. Completion of two leadership courses to be taken inconsecutive years. It encompasses strong academic course work complemented by many extracurricular activities that foster the pillarsof character and citizenship. It encompasses strong academic coursework complemented by many extracurricular activities thatfoster the pillars of character and citizenship. Naval Science 2includes content in: Leadership Theory; Personal Financial Literacy; Naval History; and Naval Sciences including Meteorology, Oceanography, Astronomy, Electricity and Aerodynamics.This course includes Military Drill, and wearing the NJROTCuniform is required one day each week.Students completing this course are prepared to enroll in NavalScience 3.PRE-ENGINEERING PROGRAMGrades 10-12 .Offered at Oakdale High School.Prerequisites: Algebra 1 and ICP or ABP.Students study a combination of science, math, and technology courses over a three-year period. In addition to traditionalcourse work, students are introduced to practical applicationsin the following fields of engineering – CAD, robotics, electricalsystems, mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, structures,manufacturing (CNC), residential wiring, damage control,lasers, and quality control. Hands-on experience is combinedwith classroom study to introduce students to the various areasof engineering. Courses in this three-year program must include: Pre-Engineering 1, 2, 3 Pre-Calculus Physics Two electives chosen from upper level science, math,technology education, or information technology courses.These courses must be approved for each student by theschool’s Pre-Engineering Academy Advisory Board.NAVAL SCIENCE 3568830 Grades 11 – 12Prerequisites: Sports physical and completion of Naval Science 2.This course is the third in a series of four courses in theNJROTC program. It encompasses strong academic coursework complemented by many extracurricular activities thatfoster the pillars of character and citizenship. Naval Science3 includes content in: Application of Leadership Skills, NavalOperations, Marine Navigation, Shipboard Organization andWatches, Naval Weapons and Aircraft, Sea Power and NationalSecurity, Military Law, and International Law and the Sea.Students enrolled in NJROTC will practice drill regularly andare required to wear the uniform one day each week.Students completing this course are prepared to enroll in NavalScience 4.PROJECT LEAD THE WAY:BIOMEDICAL SCIENCESOffered only at the Career and Technology Center and TuscaroraHigh School.Student shadowing and application process required. See your counselor.This sequence of four courses prepares students for entry intotwo and four-year college programs in the biomedical sciencesand biotechnology. Students are encouraged to purchase a labmanual but it is not required.Upon completion of all four courses students may receive 4articulated credits for Bio 113 at Stevenson University.NAVAL SCIENCE 4568840 Grade 12Prerequisites: Sports physical and completion of Naval Science 3.This course is the culmination of a series of four courses in theNJROTC program. It encompasses strong academic coursework complemented by many extracurricular activities thatfoster the pillars of character and citizenship. TEACHER ACADEMYOffered at the Career and Technology Center.The Teacher Academy, located at the Career and TechnologyCenter, is an approved MSDE program that prepares highschool students for further education and careers in the education profession such as teacher, guidance counselor, schoolpsychologist, paraprofessional, etc.The Teacher Academy of Maryland (TAM) curriculumincludes courses such as Human Growth and Developmentthrough Adolescence, Teaching as a Profession, and Foundations of Curriculum and Instruction that are designedto expose students to the world of teaching. DUAL ENROLLMENTUnder the College and Career Readiness and College Completion Act of 2013, Maryland’s public high school students cantake advantage of reduced tuition by enrolling in approvedcourses in public colleges and universities. Enrolling in acollege course will provide students with the exposure toexperiences and information necessary for making informeddecisions when selecting a college or career. Through apartnership with Frederick Community College, studentscan engage in many dual enrollment options, including HighSchool Based, Open Campus, Career Pathways, and EarlyCollege at FCC:High School Based: High school students in this programtake FCC courses at their high school or the Career andTechnology
