Dr. Ahmed willjoin our Interventional Radiology Section on October 1. Dr. Ahmed received his undergraduate degreefrom The Aga Khan University Medical School in Karachi, Pakistan, after which he joined our departmenthere at BIDMC as a research fellow as part of our NCI-funded cancer imaging fellowship program. Dr.Ahmed completed his radiology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and was appointedChief Resident in 2007. He has recently completed his fellowship in Interventional Radiology at TheJohns Hopkins Hospital/School of Medicine in Baltimore. Under the excellent guidance of Nahum Goldberg, Muneedhas had an extremely successful academic career to date having published over 25 high impact articles in top-levelpeer-reviewed journals, as well as winning almost every award that the RSNA offers. Muneeb’s area of research expertisefocusses on enhancing intratumoral delivery of liposomal-vector-delivered chemotherapies with radiofrequency ablation, methodology that he has already successfully translated from his benchtop into clinical pracice. Many of you already knowMuneeb and it is with immense pleasure that I welcome Muneeb back to our department. -JBK Resident Award for Erica GuptaPlease join me in congratulating 2nd year resident, Erica Gupta, on being selected to participate in the 2009-10 RSNA/AUR/ARRS Introduction to Academic Radiology Program, to take place during the May 2 - May 7, 2010 ARRS AnnualMeeting in San Diego, California. Erica will receive a 1000 educational grant to join several top residents throughoutthe country in a week long course learning the importance of research in diagnostic radiology. I am sure this will be anenriching experience for her and we are proud for her to represent our department. - Jim Wu

Congratulation to the Graduating Class of the BIDMC School of Nuclear Medicine TechnologyThe 2nd graduating class from the BIDMC Schoolof Nuclear Medicine Technology was September30th 2009. 6 students graduated and all had someamazing accomplishments over the 13th program. Thegraduates are: Courtney Chochrek, Courtney Foster,Heather Hansen, Joseph Kukler, Russell Miranda, andJarred Trouve. This group was great at the New England chapter meetingin Hartford, CT, when they presented oral presentations.BUT, they did not stop there; they went to Toronto andcreated a name for BIDMC & themselves with an amazingjob with their projects/presentations at the national level! I had many techs and physicians from around the country thatheard the presentations come up to me and say that this group did an amazing job! Joseph Kukler won an award for bestoral presentation in the general nuclear medicine category. They have all submitted their work for publication in the JNMT—the prestige NM journal for technologists.Joseph was also the winner of a national scholarship award given by the SNM. Heather and Jarred were winners of theCardinal Health Awards for their work done for the national meeting. In addition to these accomplishments, everygraduate was awarded a travel scholarship to attend the national meeting in Toronto where they presented their researchprojects. 25 awards were given out and all 6 of our graduates received an award—this was out of approximately 80submissions.Finally, but certainly not last the most important thing, they all passed their boards last week! Congratulations!!!! Mentoring Meetings 2009-2010In Spetember, we introduced the formal mentoring meetings for the 2009-2010 academic year, to be held on Tuesdaysat noon, in general on the last Tuesday of the month, in the Kirstein Living room. As in prior years, the meetings will bemoderated by either Bob Lenkinski or Debbie Levine, with special guest speakers from Countway Library and from ourstatistician Long Ngo. Because it is known that work-relatedmusculoskeletal complaints can be related to workstation set up, chair design and settings, monitor placement and other issues related to the computer workstation, new adjustable tables and chairs have beeninstalled in several reading rooms. Additionally, because an individual’s posture and positioning may contribute to repetitivestress symptoms and injuries, several training sessions and 2 educational Grand Rounds lecture were offered by OccupationalHealth personnel and Harvard School of Public Health faculty. A recent survey shows that these initiatives have had positivebenefits. For example, for radiologists who received ergonomic chairs, tables, or training, a perceived reduction in repetitivestress symptoms was reported by 80%, 70%, and 80% of respondents, respectively, for each of these initiatives. These findingswere shared with the radiology community at the 2007 RSNA meeting and were published in the Journal of the AmericanCollege of Radiology. We also presented data regarding the prevalence of repetitive stress symptoms among technologists atthe 2009 American Roentgen Ray Society meeting. Our departmental Ergonomics Team is led by Dr. Phil Boiselle and comprised of the following members: Dieter Affeln(Occupational Health), Ron Eisenberg (Radiology faculty), Dana Lagrotta (US technologist), Deb Levine (Radiology faculty), PhilPurvis (PACS), Kathleen Shillue (Occupational Health), Dan Siegal (Radiology resident), Bettina Siewert (Radiology faculty) andNancy Williams (administrative assistant). Our goals are to further improve the safety of our workplace environment by ensuring that all of our work areas areergonomically designed and by educating our staff regarding ergonomic principles. We are also currently working closely withspecialists from the Harvard School of Public Health to redesign the way in which radiologists interact with computers in orderto further enhance the safety of our workplace.
