Students return and fill our campus with good spiritand friendship. Colleagues catch up with one another on summer adventures.Orientations and retreats that prepare teachers and students for our sharedwork go off without a hitch, and just like that we are launched into another yearof teaching, learning, and collective growth as a community. In a familiar refrain,I’m confident our best days are ahead!I am pleased to welcome new leaders and teachers, some of whom are featured inthis issue. Our new Principal, Dr. Christopher Smart, is now immersed in the yearwith our families, students, teachers, and his strong team of Associate Principals.Together, these leaders have brought a level of energy and enthusiasm that matchesthe positive vibrancy of our students and that point to excellence and innovation. Our charism and values are coming to life in new ways as well this year.We are deepening our attention to “Community in Diversity,” a charism valuethat calls us to celebrate and honor who we are individually and collectively inways that uplift our entire community, increasing belonging, joy, and learning. Our efforts to strengthen how we enact this value through our classrooms andteaching is led by our new Associate Principal of Academics, Dr. Tanya Susoev, and Academic Dean, Patrice Wakeley ‘01. Their work to enhance learning, inpartnership with teachers, students, and leaders, is informed by what educatorsknow and research affirms: that belonging is the gateway to both personal andacademic growth for students. I encourage you to read more about Tanya andPatrice and their approach to building inclusive learning in this issue. Also included is our 2018-2019 Annual Report, including stories about thegenerosity of our Dragon families and friends–a generosity likewise inspiredby belonging to a school community rooted in its values and contributing to thecommon good.“We are deepening our attention to “Community inDiversity,” a charism value that calls us to celebrateand honor who we are individually and collectivelyin ways that uplift our entire community, increasingbelonging, joy, and learning.”

MESSAGE OF LOVEFORMER O’DOWD TEACHER TOM TYLER RECEIVESTHE COR UNUM AWARDAt Commencement each year, O’Dowd honors an individual with the Cor Unum (One Heart inChrist) Award. This highest honor is presented to an O’Dowd community member whose life andwork embody O’Dowd’s mission to create a more just, joyful, and sustainable world. This year’srecipient was our Commencement speaker and former O’Dowd faculty memberTom Tyler.Tyler was recognized for his integral role–as a former 26-year teacher at O’Dowd, parent of alumni Sage ‘13 and Maya ‘13, volunteer, and respected advisor–ineducating the O’Dowd community about our shared responsibility in caring forthe earth and helping further our school’s commitment to our charism value,“kinship with creation.”Tom Tyler, Cor Unum Award RecipientIn a compelling address to the graduates, Tom shared the importance of servingthe common good. And he reflected on how today’s divisive, turbulent times reflectthose of his youth in the late sixties and early seventies–assassinations of RobertKennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the resignation of Nixon, an unpopular, ongoing war. He shared with an audience quickly filled with affirming nods and‘yes’ responses, “In short, during my high school years it seemed likethe ideals of America were being severely tested and pushed almostto the breaking point. Does this sound all too familiar?”He also shared words of encouragement for the Class of 2019 abouttaking action and civic responsibility. “And we know that you are committed to protecting our precious planet and will strive to create a morejust and sustainable world for all its people and its creatures. We knowthat you know too much to be fooled and that you will stand for whatyou know to be right and fair.”Associate Principal Brian Judd and Tom Tyler,Cor Unum Award RecipientTyler ended his address by sharing a story told by a rabbi who visitedhis high school religion class when he was a young man. The rabbisuggested to his class that only two questions mattered: ‘What haveyou learned? And how well have you loved?’ Tyler closed by sharingthe rabbi’s final words as advice and an invitation to the Class of 2019:“Share your passion. Show mercy. Accept suffering. Practice compassion. Hold each other tenderly and with love, always.”Watch Tom’s full speech at https://youtu.be/uld1IVw-01g“Share your passion. Show mercy. Accept suffering.Practice compassion.
