Graduation / Associate Degree and Certificate Requirementshttp://www.avc.edu (661) 722-6300Associate Degree Requirements(Title 5, Section 55063)Graduation from Antelope Valley College with the associatein arts or associate in science degree requires the completion ofa minimum of 60 semester units, see requirements 1 through 6.Antelope Valley College awards the associate in sciencedegree or the associate in arts degree to students who pursuemajors offered in the following divisions: Business, ComputerStudies and Economic Development; Health Sciences; LanguageArts; Math, Science and Engineering; Kinesiology, Athletics andDance; Social and Behavioral Sciences; Technical Education;and Visual and Performing Arts. In the course descriptionsection of this catalog, all courses that apply to the associatedegree or certificates are designated as (AVC).The completion of an associate in arts or an associate inscience degree does not ensure that a student can transferdirectly to a four-year college or university. Students interestedin transferring should refer to the Transfer Information sectionin this catalog.Requirements for the Associate in Arts forTransfer (AA-T) or Associate in Science forTransfer (AS-T)The Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (SenateBill 1440, now codified in California Education Code sections66746-66749) guarantees admission to a California StateUniversity (CSU) campus for any community college studentwho completes an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT), anewly established variation of the associate degrees traditionallyoffered at a California community college. The Associatein Arts for Transfer (AA-T) or the Associate in Science forTransfer (AS-T) is intended for students who plan to complete abachelor’s degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Studentscompleting these degrees (AA-T or AS-T) are guaranteedadmission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus ormajor. In order to earn an AA-T or AS-T degree a student mustcomplete the following:(1) Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units thatare eligible for transfer to the California State University,including both of the following:(A) The Intersegmental General Education TransferCurriculum (IGETC)* or the California State UniversityGeneral Education – Breadth Requirements.(B) A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter unitsin a major or area of emphasis, as determined by thecommunity college district.(2) Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0.ADTs also require that students must earn a C or better in allcourses required for the major or area of emphasis.*For those students who select the IGETC pattern, they arerequired to complete the CSU path.Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept theAA-T or AS-T will be required to complete no more than 60units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree (unless the majoris a designated “high-unit” major). This degree may not be thebest option for students intending to transfer to a universityor college that is not part of the CSU system. Studentsmust apply for graduation to earn their degree or certificate.Applications are due by October 15 for spring/summer graduatesand by April 15 for fall graduates. Applications can be completedonline, or students can print the application from the AVCwebsite at www.avc.edu and mail in. After review, a preliminaryevaluation will be sent to the students’ myAVC e-mail accountshowing the progress toward the degree. Students will receiveinformation on participating in the annual commencementceremony from Student Development during spring term. Whileparticipation in the commencement ceremony is encouraged, it isnot mandatory and does not indicate the completion of a degreeor certificate.1. General Education RequirementsGeneral Education (GE) is designed to introduce the studentsto the variety of means through which people comprehend thechanging world. It reflects the conviction of AVC that thosewho receive their degrees must possess in common certainbasic principles, concepts, and methodologies both uniqueto and shared by the various disciplines. College educatedpersons should be able to use this knowledge when evaluatingand appreciating the physical environment, the culture, and thesociety in which they live. Most importantly, GE should lead tobetter self understanding.Courses or a combination of courses which meet GEphilosophy and objectives will:1. Provide an introduction to basic concepts, principles, and

Lead to better self understanding in relationship to thephysical environment, culture, economy and society;3. Provide an opportunity to examine values while proposingsolutions for major social problems; and,4. Provide a breadth of knowledge and experiences whichcontribute to a well-rounded education.Courses in natural science present critical thinking andproblem solving methods. These courses also explore therelationship that exists between people and science;Courses in the social and behavioral sciences focus on peopleas members of society. These courses should promoteappreciation of how societies and social subgroups operate.Courses in the humanities present the cultural activities andartistic expressions of human beings. These courses helpstudents in developing aesthetic understanding and the abilityto make value judgements;Courses in language and rationality present principles oflanguages which lead toward logical thought, clear andprecise expression, and critical evaluation of communication;Courses or a combination of courses in the performing andvisual arts and physical education provide both theory andpractice;Courses in foreign language include substantive content ofthe culture of the relevant country;Ethnic studies and multicultural courses are offered in at leastone of the required GE categories.Courses which emphasize occupational competency do not meetGE objectives.Double Counting: While a course might satisfy more than onegeneral education requirement, it may not be counted more thanonce for these purposes.
