Degree, Certificate, and Transfer Information 6Chapter Six6DEGREE, CERTIFICATE, ANDTRANSFER INFORMATIONSuccessful completion of approved programs at Ohlone College may lead to:nnnnnnn an Associate in Arts for Transfer or Associate in Science for Transfer(ADT) degree;an Associate in Arts (AA) or Associate in Science (AS) degree;a Certificate of Achievement;a Certificate of Accomplishment;a Certificate of Competency;a Certificate of Completion;completion of lower division (freshman and sophomore) requirementsfor transfer to upper division (junior) standing at a baccalaureatecollege or university.Although these objectives are listed separately, it is possible to achievemultiple goals concurrently during the freshman and sophomore years ofcollege. For example, it is possible to use the coursework completed for acertificate program as a major for an associate degree. Similarly, studentscompleting lower division requirements for transfer to a baccalaureate collegeor university may find it possible to meet the requirements for an associatedegree from Ohlone College.It is important for students to declare an academic program as early as possiblein their academic career, but no later than by the time that 15 degree applicableunits are completed. Students must have a declared program in order to beeligible to receive financial aid, and students who have declared programsare given earlier registration appointments. Students may declare multipleprograms and may change their declared program at any time; however, nostudent should remain undeclared after completing 15 degree applicableunits. Students can declare or change an academic program by submittinga Change or Declare Major Form to the Office of Admissions and Records onthe Fremont campus or the Student Services Center on the Newark campus.A Change or Declare Major Form is available online at ted/declaremajor.pdf.Transfer Credit from Another InstitutionOhlone College accepts credit for lower division coursework previouslycompleted at a college accredited by one of the six regional accreditingassociations. Students must have official transcripts sent to the Office ofAdmissions and Records on the Fremont campus. To be official, the transcriptsmust be sent from college to college or be hand-delivered in a sealed,unopened college or university envelope. An Ohlone counselor will reviewthe coursework to determine how it may be applied to the comprehensiveStudent Education Plan.Students who have completed courses at non-regionally accredited institutionsneed to meet with an Ohlone counselor to petition for individual courses tobe accepted for major requirements. The credit is non-transferable toward abaccalaureate degree. Students who want to use coursework completed ata foreign institution must have their transcripts evaluated by an approvedforeign evaluation service. Students must meet with a counselor to petitionto use any of this coursework toward the associate degree. Determine ifa. you want to earn a noncredit certificate of completion or certificate of competency, which consists of zero units. Follow the CSU General Education Breadth requirements (Plan B) on page 59 to transfer to the California State University or follow the IGETC requirements (Plan C) onpage 60 to transfer to the University of California, California State University, or private/out-of-state institutions. Follow the IGETC requirements (Plan C) on page 60if you have not yet decided between a CSU or UC campus. You should also see a counselor to help you make decisions about campuses, majors, and General Educationoptions.c. 6 DEGREE, CERTIFICATE, AND TRANSFER INFORMATIONAssociate Degree for Transfer to CSU (ADT)Associate in Arts and Associate inScience DegreesAccording to §55061(a) of the California Code of Regulations, “The awardingof an Associate Degree is intended to represent more than an accumulationof units. It is to symbolize a successful attempt on the part of the college tolead students through patterns of learning experiences designed to developcertain capabilities and insights. Among these are the ability to think andto communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; to usemathematics; to understand the modes of inquiry of the major disciplines;to be aware of other cultures and times; to achieve insights gained throughexperience in thinking about ethical problems; and to develop the capacityfor self-understanding. In addition to these accomplishments, the studentshall possess sufficient depth in some field of knowledge to contribute tolifetime interest.”Students are provided with several options for fulfilling the requirementsfor an associate degree at Ohlone. Each option is designed to meet specificeducational goals. It is imperative for students to meet early and often witha counselor to both plan and maintain their educational plan. The fourcategories of majors and three patterns of general education are describedbelow and can be combined to meet various educational goals.Students are eligible for graduation upon the completion of a general educationpattern, a major, and an accumulative total of 60 semester units in degreeapplicable courses with a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) andwith a minimum grade of C in all courses in the major field (including majorfield electives and supporting courses).Associate Degree for Transfer to CSUThe Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (Senate Bill 1440,codified in California Code of Regulations sections 66746-66749)guarantees admission to a California State University (CSU) campusfor any community college student who completes an “associatedegree for transfer,” a newly established variation of the associatedegrees traditionally offered at a California community college. Theassociate in arts for transfer or the associate in science for transfer(ADT) are intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’sdegree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completingthese degrees are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, butnot to a particular campus or major. In order to earn one of thesedegrees, students must complete 60 required semester units of CSUtransferable coursework with a minimum GPA of 2.0. While aminimum GPA of 2.0 is required for admission, some majors mayrequire a higher GPA. The associate degree for transfer may not bethe best option for students intending to transfer to a particularCSU campus or to a university or college that is not part of the CSUsystem. Students should consult with a counselor when planningto complete the associate degree for transfer for more informationon university admission and transfer requirements.California Community Colleges offer associate degrees for transfer to the CSU.These degrees include associate in arts for transfer or associate in science fortransfer degrees (ADT). These degrees are designed to provide a clear pathwayto a CSU major and baccalaureate degree. California Community Collegestudents who are awarded an ADT are guaranteed admission with juniorstanding somewhere in the CSU system and given priority admissionconsideration to their local CSU campus or to a program that is deemedsimilar to their community college major. This priority does not guaranteeadmission to specific majors or campuses.Ohlone College currently has twenty-seven approved associate degrees fortransfer. For 2020-2021 Ohlone’s approved associate degrees for transferare in Administration of Justice; Anthropology; Art History; Biology; BusinessAdministration; Communication Studies; Computer Science; Early ChildhoodEducation; Economics; English; Film, Television, and Electronic Media;Geography; Geology; Global Studies; History; Kinesiology; Mathematics;Music; Philosophy; Physics; Political Science; Psychology; Social JusticeStudies; Sociology; Spanish; Studio Arts; and Theatre Arts. Studentsgraduating with an associate degree for transfer cannot use Ohlone College(Plan A) General Education.To find out which CSU campuses accept each associate degree for transfer,please go to www.adegreewithaguarantee.com/Degrees.aspx. Currentcommunity college students are encouraged to meet with a counselor toreview their options for transfer and to develop an educational plan that bestmeets their goals and needs.Majors for Students Intending to TransferSome associate degrees are designed to prepare students for a baccalaureatemajor by fulfilling many of the lower division major and general educationrequirements at the California State University (CSU) and University ofCalifornia (UC) campuses. While the core courses required in these degreesfor students intending to transfer fulfill many of the lower divisionrequirements, students are advised to meet with a counselor to assess thecourse requirements for specific universities. Upon verified completion ofthese majors; the general education requirements specific for Ohlone College(Plan A), CSU GE (Plan B), or IGETC (Plan C); and any necessary electiverequirements, students are awarded an associate in arts or an associate inscience degree in the specified major.Multidisciplinary MajorsStudents may fulfill a major in one of five general areas (Business, Fine Arts,Liberal Arts, Natural Science, or Social Science) by completing a minimumof 18-20 units selected from the designated departments and courseslisted in the curriculum guides in this catalog. Upon verified completion ofthese 18-20 units; the general education requirements specific for OhloneCollege (Plan A), CSU GE (Plan B), or IGETC (Plan C); and any necessaryelective requirements, students will be awarded an associate in arts in thespecified area.Career Education MajorsCareer education programs are available to students interested in preparingfor employment in the fields listed on pages 61-62. Career education majorsare designed to prepare students for entry-level employment, but thesemajors can also prepare students for transfer into a comparable baccalaureatemajor. Students are advised to consult with a counselor if they wish toconsider transfer possibilities. Most of the career-oriented programs leadeither to an associate degree or to a certificate of achievement, the latterusually taking one year to complete. It is possible for students to enroll inspecific individual courses from many of these programs for personal benefitwithout completing a total program; however, some programs have separateadmissions requirements and many courses have prerequisites. Upon verifiedcompletion of an approved career education major; the general educationrequirements specific for Ohlone College (Plan A), CSU GE (Plan B), or IGETC(Plan C); and any necessary elective requirements, students are awarded anassociate in arts or an associate in science degree in the specified major.2020-2021 OHLONE COLLEGE CATALOG49

Upon verified completion of graduationrequirements, the major appears on the student’s permanent record, alltranscripts, and on the diploma. Please see the Catalog Rights Policy inChapter 5 of this catalog for information regarding which catalog yearstudents may use to satisfy graduation requirements. Whichever catalogyear is selected, all graduation requirements must be completed within thatyear. Of the 60 semester units required for graduation, 12 semester unitsmust be completed at Ohlone College.The General Education Program at Ohlone College reflects the values of thecollege, its students, and community, and is intended to prepare students tolive and work in a dynamic, multicultural, and global society. The college iscommitted to providing students with learning experiences both groundedin theory and application which are meant to develop the abilities to thinkcritically; to communicate clearly and ethically in both oral and in writtenform; and to use mathematics, science, and technology practically whileacquiring quality physical health. Furthermore, the college guides studentsin understanding the modes of inquiry of the major disciplines and providesactivities and experiences in the appreciation of performing arts, thesustainability of the physical environment, and value of multicultural anddiverse perspectives.
