Planning for Pre-RequisitesThe Nursing AAS-T program at LWTech, like programs across the country, is verycompetitive. Grades are weighted heavily in our admission process.Careful pre-requisite planning is strongly encouraged. Ask yourself the followingquestions as you plan to take the pre-requisite courses:What are your life obligations? Do you work? Have children? Have other obligations in addition to going toschool? It is important to consider the pace and order in which you takeclasses. It is also important to look into support services you may qualify for.How much time do you have to dedicate to each class you’re taking? Consider taking 1-2 classes per quarter. Going slower may allow you todedicate more time to your class(es) and higher grades. Can you get a 3.8 or higher (the average grade for the required courses) if youtake these classes together? Pair classes thoughtfully. Know which courses are going to take you moreeffort and pair them with class(es) that you feel more confident in.

Planning for Pre-Requisites Do you enjoy and understand the pre-requisite class content? As you take your pre-requisite courses in preparation of applying to the nursingprogram, please keep in mind that the courses required are required for a reason. The pre-requisite courses are core components of your education and theknowledge gained in them will be used throughout the Nursing curriculum. You willbe expected to bring that knowledge to the very first quarter of the nursingprogram. This is especially true of the science courses. Why am I choosing Nursing? Many students are interested in the healthcare field and are unaware of thevast opportunities in the field beyond Nursing. There are other healthcarecareers available, many of which are less competitive that also offer stablecareers and salary. Check out LWTech’s other healthcare programs., whichinclude: Behavioral Healthcare Fitness Funeral Service Education Medical Assisting Occupational Therapist Assistant Physical Therapist Assistant Public Health

Planning for Pre-RequisitesBelow are two example plans for completion of pre-requisites. There are many differenttimelines and combinations to take your pre-requisite courses. Individual circumstances willdetermine which plan is best for you. Visit www.lwtech.edu/NursingAdvising for moreacademic planning resources.1. Example of plan for student who has few outside obligations and wishes tocomplete pre-requisites quickly:Quarter 1Quarter 2Quarter 3Quarter 4BIOL&160BIOL&241Pre-req: BIOL&160BIOL&242Pre-req: BIOL& 241BIOL&260Pre-req: BIOL&160,CHEM&121CHEM&121CMST&210 or 220 or 230NUTR&101MATH&146PSYC&200ENGL&1012. Example of plan for student who has outside obligations and wishes totake a reduced course load:Quarter 1Quarter 2Quarter 3Quarter 4Quarter 5Quarter UTR&101MATH&146CMST&(210 or220 or 230)

Planning Considerations forScience CoursesThe Advising Department and the Science Department strongly recommend students consider the following:Sequencing: Take the science courses in the following sequence: CHEM&121, BIOL&160, BIOL&241,BIOL&242, BIOL&260. Take BIOL&241 and BIOL&242 sequentially, without any gap quarters, to ensure you retaininformation. BIOL&260 should be taken last in the science sequence even though the pre-requisites allow it tobe taken after completion of CHEM&121/BIOL&160.Course Load: With the exception of CHEM&121 and BIOL&160, students never take two sciences together in thesame quarter. For some students, even taking CHEM&121 and BIOL&160 in the same quarter canbe an overload. Talk to an advisor to determine if taking them together is the right choice for you. Start your BIOL&241 and BIOL&242 sequence in Fall or Winter so that you can take the coursessequentially during the longer quarters. The summer quarter is a short quarter, which can beoverwhelming to many students. If students plan to take one of these courses in a summer quarter, they are strongly advised to only take 1 course.Studying: While not required or considered for Nursing AAS-T admission, work hard and pay close attention toBIOL&160. This course is important to build a strong foundation in preparation for your otherscience requirements. LWTech offers free tutoring for all of the nursing pre-requisites. Students are stronglyencouraged to utilize the Learning Lab for their sciences and other requirements.

Pre-Requisite Programs of StudyWhile pursuing pre-requisites, students are encouraged to considerdeclaring one of the following majors: Health Sciences AAS-T (90 cr) Pre-Nursing DTA/MRP (95 cr)These programs provide the following benefits: Not competitive admission, can declare major any time and startany quarter. Programs embeds all pre-requisites for Nursing AAS-T program, whichpresents a financial aid benefit (pre-requisite courses are eligible to bepaid for by financial aid). Unsuccessful applicants to the Nursing AAS-T program may use thisdegree as a “backup plan” and can continue to complete the programand earn a credential to apply to other programs. Graduates of this program can apply to Nursing AAS-T program as wellas other healthcare related programs such as LWTech’s BehavioralHealth BAS and Public Health BAS programs The Pre-Nursing DTA/MRP program prepares students to apply fortransfer to select university Nursing programs.
