Wait until the pen hasbeen out of the refrigerator and warms up to roomtemperature. After opening the pen, you shouldnot refrigerate it, and you can use it for up to28 days2. Before beginning, check to see that the insulin in the penis clear and colorless. If it is not clear or has particles, donot use that Lantus SoloSTAR pen. Don’t make the needle too tight. If you havea push-on needle, keep it straight as you push it onAlways use a new needle. (Remember, needlesare not supplied with the pen. See page 11 ortalk to your healthcare provider)Why? Re-using a needle can block the insulinfrom injecting correctly and can also causecontamination and infection. Dial a test dose of 2 UnitsIt is very important to always do a safety testbefore an injectionWhy? The safety test removes air bubbles, whichhelps you get the most accurate dose. It alsomakes sure that the pen and needle areworking right. The safety test does not wasteinsulin (there is a little extra insulin in the penfor the tests)02412. Hold the pen with the needle pointing up. Then gently tapthe reservoir so the air bubbles rise up to the needleDOs and DON’TsDO hold the pen with the needle pointing up.DO use another needle if no insulin comes out after doingthe test 3 times.DON’T use the pen if no insulin comes out after using asecond needle.3. Press the injection button all the way in (A) and check tosee that insulin comes out of the needle (B)—The dial will automatically go back to zero after youperform the testAB021Important Safety Informationfor Lantus (insulin glargine [rDNA origin] injection)The most common side effect of insulin, includingLantus , is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which maybe serious. Some people may experience symptoms suchas shaking, sweating, fast heartbeat, and blurred vision.Severe hypoglycemia may be serious and life threatening. Itmay cause harm to your heart or brain. Other possible sideeffects may include injection site reactions, includingchanges in fat tissue at the injection site, and allergicreactions, including itching and rash. In rare cases, someallergic reactions may be life threatening.4. If no insulin comes out, repeat the test 2 more times5. If there is still no insulin coming out, use a new needleand do the safety test againIMPORTANT! If there is still no insulin coming out after thefourth test, DO NOT USE THAT PEN; USE ANOTHER PEN.If you don’t have any pens left, call your pharmacy. Dial your dose (This example shows a dose of 10 units)Make sure the dose window is at “0” beforedialing your dose81012Why? If the dose window is not at 0, you will injectmore insulin than you need. That can affectyour blood sugar levelMake sure to remove the protective seal2. If you don’t dial the right dose, you can dial backup or downCheck to see that you have enough insulin in thepen for your dose. Try dialing your dose. If the pendoesn’t let you dial your dose, then you don’thave enough insulin left. Your dose cannot bedialed past the number of units left in the pen—Dose cannot be dialed past the number of units leftin the pen3. You cannot dial more than 80 units because thepen automatically has a safety stop. If you need adose of more than 80 units you must give yourselfanother injectionDOs and DON’TsIf you have enough insulin left in the pen, you can redialthe rest of your dose.
