World Polio DayIt’s on the horizon — we are about toeradicate a disease and you can bea part of it! We are 99.9 percent ofthe way toward ending polio.While the World Health Organizationhas confirmed two cases of wildpoliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Nigeria —the first cases in the country since July2014 — the program has overcomeoutbreaks before. Rotary will not stopits efforts to ensure that every childis born into a polio-free world. Manythink this could be the year we seethe last naturally occurring case ofpolio.World Polio Day is coming up onOctober 24 and can be celebratedand shared from anywhere in theworld.GIVE! Help us reach a polio-freeworld and donate today. Everydonation that we commit to polioeradication will be tripled by the Bill &Melinda Gates Foundation. Vocational Training TeamBegins First of Several TripsI wanted to let you all know that the first ofour Vocational Training Teams started work inAmman, Jordan on Sunday, September 18. Thework is covered by the Global Grant co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Greenfield andRotary Club of Amman-Petra with significant,much-appreciated District Designated Funds(DDF) from our own Rotary District 6560.ROTARY CLUBThe team of six Riley professionals, led by Dr.Mark Turrentine, left at various times on Friday,September 16, making a formal Rotarian sendoff impossible. They returned at various times on Saturday, September 24 in theevening.The plan is for ten open heart surgeries on children from all over the MiddleEast including skills transfer with the Al Khalidi Medical Center staff duringthe week. The second of at least four VTT trips covered by this Global Grant isplanned for November 18-26, 2016and the third for the end of Februaryor beginning of March in 2017.Dr. Anne Farrell is writing the blogduring this trip. She is telling the stories of their days and the children andfamilies' lives touched by this collaboration.
