Jocelyn C. Findorff and Robert L. Findorff Endowed Fund:Investing in Lifelong LearningThe Findorffs immersed themselves in OLLI life upon joining in 1997,each following their interests. Jocelyn served in Social Events planningand was active in our first poetry writing collective, under HansJuergensen. Bob told us “I always had a passion for history . OLLIgave me the opportunity to explore that and other interests unrelatedto my career.” Explore he did, enrolling in dozens of History, Politicsand Current Events classes. He led at least two classes for OLLI.“Not only does OLLI satisfy my thirst for knowledge, but it providesa sense of community for people of intellect from varied and diversebackgrounds.”This sense of community served as a lifeline to Bob after Jocelynpassed away, inspiring him to create a legacy gift of 25,000 inappreciated stocks and cash to establish the Jocelyn C. Findorff andRobert L. Findorff Endowed Fund to benefit OLLI. Jocelyn “was thecenter of our social lives so when she passed, that went with her,” Bobexplained. “OLLI got me out of the house and helped me move past mygrief. It gave me engaging, intellectual stimulation and filled some realvoids in my life.”BACK TO ZOOM OPEN HOUSEWednesday, Sept. 9, 2020Begins at 10:00 a.m.Policing in 2020: AMayor’s PerspectiveJoin us at this FREE EVENT and seewhat we have in store for you this fall.Zoom meeting link sent uponregistration. Blended Learning: A Different Kind of LearningExperience with OLLI“Unique, fun, challenging, and inspiring”Eighteen brave souls participated in a unique OLLI experience in Spring2020.OLLI-USF, in partnership withOLLI at Northwestern, piloted ablended learning course:More Than Meets the Eye:Our Perspectives in Art.“It was a good match to myusual Northwestern OLLIexperience. It was veryinteractive with excellent supporting material. It never felt like a lecturecourse.”OLLI members threw themselves into the course material in spite of theCOVID 19 lockdown.“I was grateful to have this course to work on during these safer-athome days.”This course blended synchronous and asynchronous sessions over fiveweeks. The two groups met online for the first and last (synchronous)sessions. For the three (asynchronous) sessions in between, eachOLLI member worked through modules online in Canvas, a learningmanagement system, interacted online with a partner at the sisteruniversity and posted responses to group notice boards.“The online course required work - on my own - that other courses didnot require. But I could work the course at my own time and pace duringthe week.”Canvas posed challenges as participants and instructors adapted to theenvironment:“I was frustrated with Canvas at times, but all in all, the experiencewith the technology was essential to my overall enjoyment, and generalenthusiasm. I truly had a marvelous experience with my partner andwould promote this aspect of the course.”Participants enjoyed the hybrid course content - a combination of artappreciation, poetry and creative writing:“I experienced art appreciation that was so much more intense andmeaningful than anything I'd seen in art experiences before. I learned alot about virtual classes and became comfortable with the technology.”“This course was way outside my wheelhouse. I am so happy that Isigned up for it! I have learned so much - not just about art, but poetry.”In April 2020, the OLLI-USF blog, OLLI Connects published poems bya number of the course participants. You can read these on the blogwebsite www.olliconnects.org by selecting April 2020 in the OLLIConnects Archives list.“I signed up for this class not quite knowing what I was in for.Thankyou for my poem and being my first on-line course, what a beautifulintroduction, now I am fearless and enjoying another course since ourclasses turned remote.”For Fall 2020, we are thrilled to offer again More Than Meets the Eye:Our Perspectives in Art in partnership with OLLI at Northwestern.See p. 18 for more information about this fall course.Know your online terms!Synchronous: class is occurring live, in realtime as you participate in it.Asynchronous: class is set up so you mayview, read, and participate in class anytime.A blended course has synchronous andasynchronous elements.OLLI-USF will offer primarily synchronousdistance learning this term.
