About MSJCThe Mt. San Jacinto Community College District was formed in 1962 by a vote of the citizens in Banning, Beaumont,Hemet and San Jacinto. The first students attended MSJC in Fall 1963. The San Jacinto Campus opened on formerfarmland in 1965. The Temecula, Lake Elsinore, Perris and adjacent areas voted in 1975 to join the district, increasingthe college’s area to the present 1,700 square miles. MSJC serves students on four sites in Menifee, San Jacinto,Temecula and the San Gorgonio Pass. 2019 Annual Report Message from theCollege Superintendent/PresidentFoundation Board PresidentThe Mt. San Jacinto Community College District and MSJC Foundationcontinue to take great strides in making the college more accessible than everfor our students and prospective students.In June, the MSJC Board of Trustees proudly announced that first-time, fulltime students would be able to attend MSJC tuition free beginning in Fall 2019.Hundreds of new students meeting all of the criteria of the MSJC Promiseprogram took advantage of the exciting opportunity to join us at MSJC andpursue their academic goals to improve their lives.Providing that free tuition for new college students is a wonderfulaccomplishment for us as we seek new avenues through which we can help ourregion’s residents seek a higher educational opportunity and achieve academicsuccess. We know how important a quality college education is to improvingone’s quality of life and career success.We as a district and foundation also know that tuition is but one financialbarrier that prevents students from succeeding. San Jacinto College launched the MSJC Promise program that providesfree tuition to first-time, full-time students.The Community for Accredited Online Schools recognized MSJC as oneof the best online colleges in California.“We know that tuition can be a major financial barrier that prevents peoplefrom attending college,” said Dr. Roger W. Schultz, Superintendent/President. “The MSJC Promise will remove that obstacle for incomingstudents who qualify. We urge students to take advantage of this greatprogram to earn a high-quality college education tuition free at MSJC.”MSJC ranked No. 8 on the list the San Francisco-based organizationreleased in Fall 2018. San Jacinto College’s Registered Nursing programranked No. 7 out of 160 programs in California for best-valueRN programs, according to Nursing Explorer. The nursingeducation and career resource center considers a college’sNational Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) pass rateand the net price of attendance for a student who receives theaverage amount of financial aid.Tops for the 10th TimeMSJC was named the No. 1 college for the 10th year in The Press-Enterprise’s Best of the InlandEmpire Awards. San Jacinto College’s Career and Job Fair onApril 12, at its Menifee Valley Campus. The event featured employersfrom various industries such as banking, casinos, childcare, county/city, education, food industry, fitness, healthcare, insurance, lawenforcement, logistics, retail, radio, solar, utilities and wineries.

State Provides 500,000 Grantfor OnlineCertificate ProgramsMt. San Jacinto College has received a 500,000 stategrant to help the college develop and improve online CareerEducation programs that lead to short-term, industry-valuedcertificates in Computer Information Systems.MSJC Teams With Universitiesto Transfer Nursing GraduatesDuring the 2018-2019 academic year, MSJC signed two agreements to helpthe college’s nursing graduates transfer to four-year universities.MSJC, Loma Linda University (LLU) School of Nursing, LLU MedicalCenter-Murrieta, and the City of Menifee in October 2018 announced apartnership that led the LLU School of Nursing to sign its first transferagreement with a public college.MSJC in March 2019 signed an articulation agreement with OhioUniversity’s College of Health Sciences and Professions – theuniversity’s first such agreement in Southern California.College Achievements / 9

MSJC Rolls OutMobile Career CenterEagle MakerSpace at MVCEnjoys Early SuccessThe MSJC Mobile Career Center, launched in February 2019, is equippedwith state-of-the-art technology that allows the college to provide career andemployment outreach services to all of our Riverside County communities.The Eagle MakerSpace, which opened at the Menifee Valley Campus in Fall2018, is a student community center that features 18 3D printers, biotech cellculture lab, a laser engraver, laser scanner and hand tools.Featuring 14 computer stations and an interview station, the Mobile CareerCenter visits schools and job fairs, participates in community parades,and provides workforce training, job search and employment soft skillspreparation, and resume writing.Created with Strong Workforce Funding, the MakerSpace has becomevery popular among students, staff and faculty, MakerSpace Specialist HalEdghill said.College officials also collaborate with local agencies to attend variousregional conferences, meetings and trade shows.10 / 2018-2019 Annual Report“We’ve developed a nice communityin here,” Edghill said of the EagleMakerSpace. “Students interact, theyassist each other, they volunteer. Student SuccessFour Eagles Named to2019 PTK All-CaliforniaCommunity CollegeAcademic TeamThe Community College League of California in March 2019 honoredstudents who made annual Phi Theta Kappa All-California Team at an awardsceremony held in Sacramento.Four MSJC students were awarded rankings on the list, which is comprisedof three teams. Sara Runion was named to the second team. Omar Boudiaf,Chigozirim Chinedu and Justin Perkins made the third team.The American Association of Community Colleges recognizes Phi ThetaKappa as the official honor society for community colleges.Student Success / 11

Former MSJC StudentEarns National HonorFormer MSJC honors student Jessica McMeans of Romoland was named oneof only four 2018 Portz Scholars by the National Collegiate Honors Council.McMeans won for her paper “The Birth of Venus: Reconsidering the Origins andMeanings of the Venus Figurines.”McMeans transferred from MSJC in 2018 to UC Riverside to study anthropology.She is the first MSJC student to be named a Portz Scholar.Student Government AssociationPresident Stays InvolvedBusiness administration major Aaron Perez made the most of his time at MSJC bysigning up for several clubs, providing more than 200 sessions as a tutor over twosemesters, and serving as the Student Government Association (SGA) President.The Temecula resident became a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the MusicProduction Club, and founded the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering andMathematics) Club in Temecula.After graduating in May, Perez headed off to Cal State Fullerton to major inbusiness administration. He hopes to land an internship in Major League Baseball(MLB) and eventually work on a high-ranking position in the league, perhaps evenowning a professional team.12 / 2018-2019 Annual Report

San Jacinto Mother of TwoOvercomes Homelessness,Returns to GraduateShelby Walker, her husband and their two children were homeless just a fewyears ago.The San Jacinto resident was tired of relying on government aid and realizedsomething needed to change.“So I decided to come back to school and I’m now graduating from MSJCafter only two years and was accepted to everywhere I applied,” said Walker,a Communications major who next plans to get her bachelor’s and master’sdegrees and hopes to teach someday. “Words cannot express how I’m feeling.I am so excited and cannot wait to move my tassel when I cross that stage.”On May 23, Walker joined the largest graduating class in Mt. San JacintoCollege history. She was one of four graduates who served as studentspeakers at the two commencement ceremonies held at Pechanga ResortCasino in Temecula.Student Success / 13

Record Graduation CelebratedMt. San Jacinto College celebrated its largest graduating class in May 2019, awardinga record-breaking 3,338 degrees and certificates to 1,723 graduates. That’s nearly800 more degrees and certificates than in 2018. The graduates earned a total of 2,976associate degrees and 362 career certificates, as some students earn more than onedegree, certificate or a combination.The number of graduates bested the previous year’s total by about 200. The largeincreases are attributed to a concerted MSJC outreach effort to alert students whenthey’re eligible to graduate.This was the first year the college hosted two ceremonies in order to accommodatethe growing number of graduates and their guests. It was the second year Pechangahosted atesStudent Success / 15

MSJC Celebrates 46Nurse Graduates duringPinning CeremonyForty-six Mt. San Jacinto College students earning their Associate of Sciencein Nursing degrees were recognized on May 20 during a nurse pinningceremony in a gymnasium full of family and friends on the San JacintoCampus.Getting a job in the field of study is one of the reasons MSJC’s AlliedHealth & Nursing Program earned a Silver Star award from the CaliforniaCommunity College Chancellor’s Office.16 / 2018-2019 Annual ReportDiagnostic Medical Sonography(DMS) Graduates RecognizedMt. San JacintoCollege celebratedeight graduateswho completed theDiagnostic MedicalSonography (DMS)Program this year,earning their associatedegrees. First Construction ClassCompletionMore than 20 students celebrated the completionof Mt. San Jacinto College’s first Introduction toConstruction class in a ceremony on Saturday, May4. The City of Temecula and the Carpenters Unionsponsored the 11-week course.EOPS Students CelebrateMSJC Extended Opportunities Programs &Services (EOPS) held a Recognition Ceremony onApril 26 for students who completed the programthis year. EOPS is designed to recruit and retainstudents who are economically, socially andeducationally disadvantaged by providing themwith the tools and resources to help them achievetheir educational goals.100 Students Earn GEDMore than 100 students earned their GeneralEducation Diploma (GED) through the MSJC AdultEducation Program this year and about 30 of themcelebrated the accomplishment in a recognitionceremony on Thursday, May 16, at the college’sMenifee Valley Campus.Student VeteransHonoredThe Veteran Resource Centers celebratedtheir 82 student-veterans’ graduationwith a “Mission Accomplished”celebratory dinner on May 16, at theMenifee Valley Campus. About threedozen of the student-veterans attendedthe event. About half of the studentveteran graduates served in the MarineCorps. Another 19 served in the Armyand 16 served in the Navy. MSJCearned both the “Military Friendly”and “Military Friendly Spouse School”designations in Spring 2019.Student Success / 17

AthleticsTop 5 MSJC Sports Stories of 2018-19Women’s VolleyballThe MSJC Volleyball team won a program-record 22 matches in Fall 2018 and finished second in theconference. They also reached the CCCAA playoffs for just the second time in program history and earnedthe team’s first-ever postseason victory when they beat Santa Monica in the opening round of the SouthernCalifornia Regional. Lauryn Patterson, Ruby Ruiz and Cynthia Arango were named First Team AllConference. Six volleyball players earned scholarships to go on to the four-year level in 2019.18 / 2018-2019 Annual Report

Women’s BasketballThe MSJC Women’s Basketball team won their second straight Pacific Coast AthleticConference championship this past season while advancing to the CCCAA SouthernCalifornia Regional Finals with a record of 24-7. Alyssa Walton was named the PCACPlayer of the Year and earned Second Team All-State honors. The team has a record of189-32 over the past seven seasons.Men’s BasketballDavid Thompson of the Men’s Basketball team was named Pacific Coast AthleticConference Player of the Year and First Team All-State. He also signed a scholarship toplay at Santa Clara University. The men’s team finished the season 22-6 and reached theplayoffs for the 11th straight season.FootballThe MSJC Football team went 7-3 in 2018, finishing third in the American MountainConference. Quarterback Brett Virgil was named both First Team All-Conference and AllRegion IV.BaseballBaseball Coach Steve Alonzo retired from his coaching position after 32 years in chargeof the club. Alonzo was honored on April 26, 2019, prior to the team’s final home gameby Dean of Kinesiology and Athletics Patrick Springer and Vice President of StudentServices Dr. John Colson. Alonzo retires with 590 wins in his career at MSJC.Athletics / 19

Student LifeFood 4 Thought Helps StudentsAbout one in five students sit in their classrooms hungry, so MSJC created the Food 4 Thought Pop-UpPantry to tackle food insecurity. The food pantry appears twice monthly at the Menifee Valley and SanJacinto campuses, providing free food and other items to hundreds of students each time. The MSJCFoundation and the college have teamed to create the Pledge for Success program to provide additionalassistance to students in need, including additional food options.20 / 2018-2019 Annual Report

Halloween Face PaintingStudents from the Theatrical Makeup class painted faces ofchildren from the MSJC Child Development and Education Center.Dia de los MuertosA Dia de los Muertos event celebrated the Day of the Dead onNov. 1 at the Menifee Valley Campus.MSJC Holds Sexual AssaultAwareness Month EventsAs part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, MSJC hosted Denim Day & the Clothesline Project on April24 and 25 at the Menifee Valley and San Jacinto campuses. The MSJC Diversity Committee organized thetwo-pronged event that encouraged students, faculty and staff to wear denim and to paint a T-shirt sharingan important message to support sexual assault survivors. The Menifee Valley Campus then hosted a SexualAssault Awareness Rally & Take Back the Night Vigil on the evening of April 25.Student Life / 21

Rows of Backpacks HighlightSuicide Prevention AwarenessThe Active Minds club on April 23 hosted a Send Silence Packing event at the Menifee Valley Campus.Send Silence Packing is a nationally recognized traveling exhibition of donated backpacks representingcollege students lost to suicide each year. The program is designed to raise awareness about theincidence and impact of suicide, connect students to needed mental health resources, and inspireaction for suicide prevention.Students Live‘Homeless fora Night’About two dozen MSJC Phi Theta KappaHonor Society students slept in their carsto live “Homeless for a Night” at theMenifee Valley Campus in November2018.During the event, they heard presentations from the city of Menifee’s Homelessness TaskForce and from the Social Work Action Group, which helps homeless people get off thestreets.
