We met our goals with 85%of our preschoolers prepared for kindergarten, 90% of our infantsand toddlers improving or maintaining developmental progress infour out of five domains that indicate school readiness, and 80% ofcaregivers reporting that our Play & Learn groups gave them a betterunderstanding of their role in preparing their child for kindergarten.As we continue to face unprecedented societal challenges, it is criticalthat we provide structures of support today while simultaneouslyhelping our children to build their futures. Opening the Doors to the MercyMagnuson Early Learning CenterServing 300 children and families, our Mercy Magnuson EarlyLearning Center completes a holistic offering for families at or below30% of the annual median income. In partnership with Solid Ground,NeighborCare, and Mercy Housing Northwest, DLEC completesthe circle of support in providing families with affordable housing,healthcare, transportation, and our early education childcare all inone location.The Center’s uniquely self-sustaining private and public tuition modelbrings together diverse economic and cultural backgrounds in a richand supportive learning environment – a place where all children canthrive and grow alongside their peers. Within the new 14,217 squarefoot space, three preschool classrooms, two toddler classrooms, andone infant classroom accompany rooms for socialization, therapy,music, art, gross motor skills, and administrative offices.With community support and the unique collaboration of multiplenonprofit agencies, children and families in the North Seattlecommunity now have greater access to some of the most vitalservices needed to succeed. Our ChildrenEnsuring a Successful Start“I believe that whenchildren have a headstart in life, it will leadthem on a path to manyfuture successes.”– Erika Ortiz, Lead Teacher& Parent AlumiEarly Head Start (EHS) provides low-income families and women withchildren ages birth to three or who are pregnant with services to prepare their child for success. These services include weekly 90-minutehome visits to provide caregivers with early learning activities, parentsupport, and health services in their home languages; bi-monthlycaregiver socialization events to learn about group-selected topicsfrom financial planning to health education; and early interventionthrough regular assessments of each child’s development. 82 infants, 119 toddlers, 8 pregnant mothers 90% of EHS children improved or maintained progress in fourout of five developmental domains that indicate school readinessOf the 33 children who aged out of EHS, 28 entered a HeadStart program.Preparing Kids for KindergartenOur Head Start (HS) preschool program serves predominatelyimmigrant and refugee families whose children are ages three tofive and have an income under 25,750 for a family of four. Priorityfor enrollment into the program is given to children in foster care,children with special needs and families experiencing homelessness. 3 preschool centers 164 children served throughout the program year 54% of Head Start eligible children family’s income was belowfederal poverty level 97% received dental, hearing, vision, and/or physical exams 85% of preschoolers met or exceeded expectations and wereprepared to enter kindergarten4 2018-2019 Denise Louie Education Center Annual Report

Our CommitmentEngaging and Listening to Our Parentsand GuardiansDuring our last program year, Denise Louie hosted bi-monthly parentnights where families helped select speakers and topics that bestaddressed their most immediate needs, including financial literacy,nutrition, and special needs. Our preschool classrooms also haveparent-teacher conferences and home visits throughout the yearto facilitate more intimate dialogues on each child’s educationalprogress. We encourage families to help children with their homeworkand to provide us with ongoing feedback. Finally, we welcome ourfamilies into the classroom for volunteering opportunities.Parent Voices: the Driving Force ofPolicy CouncilOur Policy Council is integral to our programs’ success and representsthe families we serve. Every year, parent representatives are electedfrom both HS and EHS programs.
