Berliner, HofstraUniversity’s Provost and SeniorVice President for AcademicAffairs, is one of the longestserving Provosts in the United States. Hefirst become provost in 1989 and servedin that position for over 25 years, untilJuly 2015. He then returned to the Provost position effective January 1, 2019.The provost and senior vice president foracademic affairs is second in commandto the president at the University. In thatrole, Dr. Berliner was responsible forall the Colleges, Schools and academicprograms of the University, as well as theLibraries, the Hofstra Museum, and theSaltzman Community Services Center.Over the years as provost, Dr. Berlinerplayed a prominent role in establishingthe Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, the Hofstra University HonorsCollege, the Fred DeMatteis School ofEngineering and Allied Sciences, Schoolof Health Professions and Human Service, and the Hofstra Northwell School ofNursing and Physician Assistant Studies.Dr. Berliner also played a prominentrole in establishing a dual degreeprogram with Dongbei University inDalian, China where students earnboth a Hofstra BBA and a Dongbei BSdegree in Economics.Dr. Berliner has also served in severalother key administrative positions, including serving twice as the dean of theFrank G. His careerwas cut short as the result of aserious injury sustained in apprehendinga bank robbery suspect, during which auniformed officer was killed. Demetriouwas awarded the NYPD Medal of Honorand retired from the NYPD.Shortly after retiring Demetriou pursued his college education and devotedhimself to seeking new opportunities. In1988, he joined his elder brother Bob inestablishing a mail service for the nowdefunct PaineWebber securities brokerageorganization. Demetriou was tasked withbuilding the production facility.
