The maximum program ofstudy for a six-week summer session is 8units. The maximum program for an eightweek summer session is nine units if oneunit is physical education. For the winterterm, the maximum program of study isseven units. A student wishing to takemore than the maximum units may file anoverload petition through the Admissions& Records Office. Students must havecompleted at least 15 transferable unitsin one semester at Compton College witha 2.75 grade point average and an overallgrade point average of 2.5 or higher to beeligible for an overload.In addition to scheduled class hours,students should include in their weeklyschedule the time necessary to studyand prepare for classes. Each student isexpected to spend two hours per week instudy and preparation for each class hourfor lecture courses. In the Course Catalog,the minimum number of outside hours isnoted for each class. Students who workin business or industry should reducetheir total study programs in proportionto the demands of their employmentand personal activities. If employmentrequires 40 hours or more per week,students would limit their study programto seven units or less each semester.

New and returning students (those with an absence of two consecutive primary terms: fall or spring semesters; excludingsummer and winter terms) must complete an online application for admission. A Student ID number and Compton College email account will be issued and emailed upon completion of the onlineapplication. Students must activate their account using instructions provided in the email. Official transcripts from all accredited colleges and trade schools attended must be submitted to the Admissions & RecordsOffice (Building A). Students applying for Advanced Placement (AP) credit must submit official copy of AP scores. If under the age of 18, students willqualify if they have 1) graduated fromhigh school or 2) passed the CaliforniaHigh School Proficiency Examination.Compton College may admit as a specialpart-time or special full-time studentanyone in grades 11 or 12 who, in theopinion of the college president, maybenefit from instruction.AttendanceStudents who enroll in class but do notattend the first scheduled class meeting,may be dropped from the roster. Additionally, their place in the class will be given to students on the waiting list. If illnessor emergency prevents a student from attending the first class session, the studentmust contact the instructor. A studentwho registers for a class and never attendsis still responsible for dropping the class.Failure to properly drop a class by the appropriate deadline may result in a “W” andmay hold the student responsible for anyand all fees associated with the class. Theburden of proof is on the student.REGISTRATION INFORMATIONCalifornia ResidencyA California resident for tuition purposesis defined as a citizen of the United Statesor a person who holds a status whichallows him/her to establish residencyin the United States, and can provideevidence of physical presence in the stateof California for at least one year prior tothe residency determination date, andevidence of intention to make Californiahis/her permanent home.Documented evidence must correspondto dates of physical presence in California.A non-resident is a person who does notmeet the residency requirements of thestate of California for tuition purposes orwho is a citizen of a foreign country andholds only temporary status in the UnitedStates.California Residence WaiverAB 540 allows qualified students whomeet specific criteria to pay in-state tuitionat California public colleges and universities.1. The student must have attended a highschool (public or private) in Californiafor three or more years or have attainedcredits equivalent to three or moreyears of high school coursework and acombination of three or more years ata California elementary or secondaryschool and2. The student must have graduated from aCalifornia high school (public or private)or attained the equivalent (e.g., GeneralEducational Development - GED orCalifornia High School Proficiency Exam)prior to the start of the term at ComptonCollege.Residence RequirementsA student 19 years or older who resides inCalifornia is classified as a district resident asdefined by the California Education Codeand may enroll in any courses for which he/she is qualified. Residence is determinedbased on two factors: continued physicalpresence in California and intent to maintainCalifornia as the legal state of residence.The student cannot have engaged inany activity that contradicts Californiaresidency law and the student may not bein a classification that by law prohibits theestablishment of residence. The residenceof the student under age 19 is determinedby the legal residence of the student’sparents or legal guardian as defined by law.Drops and WithdrawalsIt is the student’s responsibility toprocess an official withdrawal from class.Failure to do so may result in a lettergrade of A through F. A student who failsto properly register or add a class willNOT receive credit for that class. Addingafter the deadline is prohibited. If astudent drops after the refund deadline,fees for the classes are forfeited. Anyclass subsequently added will requireadditional fees.Students who want to transfer toa different section must completea Section-Level Transfer form in theAdmissions & Records Office.Student RecordsCongress has provided in the “FamilyEducation Rights and Privacy Act” (FERPA)that students have certain rights of accessto their education records. Please contactthe Admissions and Records Office for anyinformation regarding your rights underthe Act.High School StudentsBy law, Compton College may restrict K-12enrollment based on any of the following:age, grade, academic preparation, seatavailability or registration priority. Compton College will grant college credit forcompleted coursework. Students shouldconsult their school counselor and/orschool district policy on enrolling in college classes to earn high school credits ordual credit.Students - When you enroll in classesat Compton College, you are considereda college student and are expected toact accordingly. Please familiarize yourself with Compton College policies, procedures, the college calendar, and yourrights as a student by reading the classschedule and purchasing a college catalog from the Bookstore.Concurrently enrolled 9th- and 12thgrade students must comply with allpolicies, follow all procedures, andmeet all requirements by the publisheddeadlines for each semester and/or term.Parents - when your child enrolls in classes at Compton College, you lose somerights afforded you by the K-12 system. Students should review thecurrent Satisfactory Academic Progress(SAP) policies on the Financial Aid webpageto clearly understand these standards.For assistance and additional information,contact the Financial Aid Office in E-17,or call 310-900-1600, ext. 2935, or emailfinancialaid@compton.edu.Health Services FeeStudents must pay 19 each semester (and 16 per intersession) to cover the operation,supervision, programs and services of theCompton College Health Center.There are exceptions under theseconditions:Students who depend exclusively uponprayer for healing in accordance with theteachings of a bona fide religious sect, denomination or organization.Exemptions: Part-time dual enrolledhigh school students are not required to paythe Health Services Fee.Refund: Students who withdraw fromall courses prior to the close of the secondweek of the term will be eligible for a refund of the Health Services Fee. Forms torequest a refund may be obtained at theOffice of Student Life (R-61).Student ID CardAll students are encouraged to obtaina free Compton College identificationcard, available in the Office of StudentLife (R-61). These cards serve as studentidentification, and are required for Libraryservices, campus activities, computerlabs, and to verify attendance in certainclasses/workshops.TranscriptsA transcript of the student’s academic record at Compton College will be furnishedupon request by the student only, in person at the Admissions and Records Office.Colleges will not be included on or withthe Compton College transcript. Academictranscripts and documents from other colleges must be requested from those colleges.The first two Compton College transcripts are free.Note: A delay in mailing the transcriptmay result if a student has outstanding feesor fines against his/her record (library, laboratory, physical education locker, supplies orreturned checks).55BookstoreOnline BookstoreTextbooks may be purchased online at:www.efollett.com.Refund PolicyMerchandise must be in new condition,in sealed package, clean and free of allmarkings and bearing all original tags. A10 percent restocking fee may be assessedon all refunds. Textbooks can be returnedfor a full refund within the first week ofthe fall and spring semesters. Textbookspurchased for summer and winter termshave three days from the start of classesto return for a full refund. Textbooks mustbe in the same condition as purchasedand must be accompanied with a registerreceipt for a full refund.
