Preparing for Graduate StudyINDEXTABLE OF CONTENTSMore is expected at the graduate levelthan what is normally required at theundergraduate level. In addition, youusually must complete special requirements at the end of your graduate program. UMGC’s master’s degree programsrequire you to complete an integrativeend-of-program capstone course inwhich you must demonstrate masteryof content covered throughout theprogram. At the doctoral level, UMGCrequires you to complete a dissertation.As long as you are continuously enrolled,you should refer to the catalog of theyear in which you began graduate studyfor the specific requirements relatedto your program of study. Continuousenrollment is defined on p. 148.In all programs, you must maintaina term and cumulative grade pointaverage (GPA) of 3.0 to remain in goodacademic standing; in some, you mustalso earn a grade of B or higher in eachclass to progress to the next class. Academic progress is assessed at the end ofeach term. Other requirements—suchas time limits for degree completion andminimum GPA—also apply; details areprovided on pp. 147–148.While UMGC’s course formats offer youconsiderable flexibility, graduate studyrequires a significant time commitment.Most courses involve group projects.Each week, you should expect to devoteat least three hours of outside study forevery credit in which you are enrolled.For example, for a 3-credit course, youwould need to devote at least nine hoursper week to outside study.6NONPROGRAM COURSESBecause UMGC graduate students oftenenter graduate study with academicbackgrounds in very different fields andmay return to study after a gap of manyyears, UMGC offers a number of coursesoutside the usual required programcourses that are designed to help yousucceed in your graduate studies. Complete course descriptions are providedon pp. 98–137.Required Introductory CourseUCSP 615 Orientation to GraduateStudies at UMGC is designed to helpyou develop the skills and techniquesyou need to understand and managethe challenges involved in successfully completing a graduate programat UMGC and to familiarize you withresearch strategies and online libraryresources—material that is critical for21st-century professionals.This noncredit course is required for allnew master’s degree students, exceptthose in programs that require CBR,DCL, or PRO 600. At the successfulconclusion of the course, a grade of S(Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory) isposted; the mark of I (Incomplete) is notan option. UCSP 615 must be completedwithin the first 6 credits of graduatestudy. It is recommended that you takethis as your first course before beginningprogram coursework.Optional Noncredit CoursesNoncredit courses (currently designatedUCSP or ASC) are available in computerprogramming, financial accounting,information technology, writing, andresearch methods and generally last fiveto eight weeks. Although these coursescarry no UMGC credit, they appear onyour official academic transcript. At thesuccessful conclusion of the course, aG R A D U AT E C ATA LO G 2019 –20 20grade of S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory) is posted; the mark of I (Incomplete)is not an option. You must be admittedor have an application on file before registering for any noncredit courses.Current information about fees fornoncredit courses is available atumgc.edu/tuition.COURSE FORMATSUMGC offers courses online and in ahybrid format that combines on-site andonline instruction.Hybrid classes typically meet on-site ata UMGC location for four to six sessionsper term; the remainder of the teachingand learning in the course occurs in theonline classroom. The schedule of onsite sessions is provided at the beginningof the term. Hybrid classes are identifiedin the most current graduate scheduleof classes.Online courses maintain the sameacademic standards as on-site courses.Course content, learning materials,requirements, assignments, and classparticipation are comparable for onlineand hybrid courses; for example, youneed to adhere to a
