CHAPTER 1

Once upon a time in a land far away therelived a boy named Roland. And Rolandwas a very good boy.Back then school hadn’t been inventedyet so most kids worked on their familyfarms all day.But Roland’s parents thought it wasimportant for their son to get aneducation and to learn to play aninstrument. So he spent his days inside, reading books and practicing the flute.Roland didn’t like practicing the flutevery much but he never complainedbecause he wanted to be a good son.2

It was a dangerous time when ogresand giants roamed the land. So Roland’sparents liked him to stay indoors whereit was safe, especially after dark.3

Roland had never even been outsidehis village. He wished he could go onadventures like his grandpa Bampy theBrave who used to fight monsters andsearch for treasure. But Bampy was never the same after hegot back from his adventures. And Rolandknew that was because Bampy didn’talways wear his helmet and he got hit onthe head a few too many times.4

Roland promised his parents that if hewent on an adventure he’d ALWAYS weara helmet and he’d make good choices. Butthey said he’d be much safer staying athome and practicing his flute. So the only thing Roland could do wasread stories about Bampy and imaginewhat it would be like to have adventuresof his OWN.5

Sometimes after Roland read about themonsters in Bampy’s stories he’d get kindof SCARED and then he’d have to sleepin his parents’ bed for a few nights. Buthis parents probably didn’t mind becausethey loved him very much. Most of the time Roland’s dad workedfrom home but once or twice a monthhe’d go on a business trip to anothervillage. And Roland’s dad would alwayssay the same thing when he left.6

Right about now you’re probably thinking“So far this is a pretty boring book.” Butjust wait because in a second it’s about toget really GOOD.This one morning when Roland’s dadwas on one of his trips something totallyCRAZY happened. Roland woke up earlyto practice his flute but then it got reallyCOLD in his room. And when he looked out the window hecouldn’t believe it was SNOWING.7

Oh yeah I probably should’ve mentionedthat this was the middle of the summerbecause then you’d be even MORE amazed.Roland ran down to the kitchen to tell hismom about the snow but he couldn’t findher ANYWHERE.So Roland went outside to ask hisneighbor Mrs. Nettles where his mom wasbecause Mrs. Nettles was pretty nosy andshe always knew everybody’s business. But that’s when Roland got some reallybad news.8

Mrs. Nettles said the White Warlockcame to the village and KIDNAPPEDRoland’s mom. And he took her to his IceFortress where he was keeping her as hisPRISONER.Now Roland was TOTALLY FREAKED OUT.You’re probably thinking “Well why didn’tRoland just call his dad?”But guess what? Phones weren’t inventedyet so he COULDN’T.9

Plus if Roland mailed his dad a letter totell him what happened it wouldn’t getto him for a long time because back thenthe mail took FOREVER.Roland was worried about his mom but hewas ALSO worried what his dad was goingto say when he got home from his trip.Roland decided the only thing he COULDdo was travel to the Ice Fortress andrescue his mom on his OWN.10

But Roland knew the journey was goingto be dangerous so he went down to thebasement and got Bampy’s old armor outof a musty chest. And even though Roland was a littlenervous about monsters and sad abouthis mom getting kidnapped he was alsoEXCITED because he was about to go onhis first ADVENTURE.ef11

After I wrote the first chapter ofmy book I showed it to my mom whosaid she was proud of me for using myimagination. Then she said she couldn'twait to find out what happens NEXT.I haven't shown it to my dad yet becauseI wanna FINISH it first. And when I'mdone I'm gonna ask him to read it to meas my bedtime story. But I'll pretend Idon't know what's gonna happen so it'llstill be SPECIAL.12

I was pretty excited to show the bookto my best friend Greg Heffley becausehe likes stories with dragons and wizardsand that kind of stuff and I figured he'dthink it was pretty awesome. But I couldn't really tell if he liked it ornot because at first he didn't say much.I asked Greg what he thought of thestory so far and he asked me if I wantedhis honest opinion or if he should tell mewhat I WANTED to hear. And I said Iwanted his honest opinion.13

But Greg reminded me that the LASTtime I asked for his honest opinion it gothim in TROUBLE. That was the timeI showed him my tap-dancing routineafter taking my first lesson.Greg told me he thought it was terribleand that hurt my feelings. So I told hismom what he said and she wasn't happy.14

Greg said if he told me his honest opinionabout my book and it hurt my feelings Iwasn't allowed to go running to his mom.So I said OK and we did a pinky swear. After that was settled Greg told meall the things that were wrong with mystory. And boy he had a LOT to say.The first thing he said is that I can'tstart the book with "Once upon a time"because that's corny and it makes itsound like a fairy tale. And that kind ofhurt my feelings right away because it'sSUPPOSED to be a fairy tale. Then Greg said no offense but thisRoland character has got a lot ofproblems and the biggest one is his HAIR.15

He said Roland has a mullet which is theworst type of haircut a person can have.I said the reason Roland's hair is long inthe back is so he'll look cool when he doesaction stuff. And Greg said maybe Roland can get ahaircut at the beginning of Chapter Two.16

Then Greg said no offense but Rolandkind of seems like a BABY and it's notreally believable that a kid his age wouldsleep in his parents' bed.And that made me feel a little ashamedbecause sometimes I sleep in my parents'bed, especially on nights when there's areally bad thunderstorm.Greg taught me a long time ago thatif you say "no offense" then the otherperson isn't allowed to have hurt feelingsabout what you say AFTER it.17

But I think that only works with kidsbecause one time I tried it on my dadand he got mad.Greg said the book was gonna be tooboring if it was only about Roland andthat he needed a SIDEKICK. I said maybeRoland could have a best friend who goesWITH him and his name could be GregHeffley. But he told me everything about his lifeis "copyright Greg Heffley" and if I usedhis name I'd have to pay him MONEY. SoI decided to make up a different sidekickfor Roland because I don't want anytrouble with Greg.18

Greg said he didn't know if he could reada book about a boy who has to rescuehis mom because that's a little tooWEIRD. So I said maybe I could switchout Roland's mom for a PRINCESS andRoland could rescue her INSTEAD.But Greg said nowadays princesses aretough and know how to fight so theydon't NEED some guy to rescue them.19

He said if I wrote a book about a helplessprincess who needs to be saved by somedude then I'm gonna get a ton of angryletters.Well that got me kind of worried becauseI don't WANNA get a bunch of angryletters. But Greg said I could put mypublisher's address on the back of thebook and then all the angry letters wouldgo to THEM.I said I was just writing the book forMYSELF and that I wasn't reallyTRYING to get it published. But Gregsaid if I was gonna do all this work Imight as well try to cash in.20

He said that if my book gets publishedI'll have to think about movies and toysand T-shirts and swimwear and all sortsof OTHER stuff too. And that soundedcomplicated. Then Greg said he'd make me a DEAL. Hesaid I could focus on the writing and he'dhandle everything ELSE. Then we'd splitall the profits fifty-fifty.I was excited because that meant meand Greg were gonna be PARTNERS. Sowe did another pinky swear to make itOFFICIAL.21
