What I hope you take from thesepages—and what is vitally important to me—is that Johns HopkinsMedicine International represents opportunity—the opportunityto learn about and interact with different cultures, to become morefamiliar with global needs that illuminate the tremendous humanchallenges that are presented on a daily basis. International also offersJohns Hopkins Medicine faculty the opportunity to educate and tomeaningfully affect quality of care and patient safety around theworld. An example of this emerged unexpectedly from our academicpartnership with Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores deMonterrey—Monterrey Tec—in Monterrey, Mexico (see page 30).In 2006, Hopkins established with them a senior medical studentrotation, inviting their four top students to spend two months atJohns Hopkins—one month on service in Otolaryngology–Headand Neck Surgery and the other in Medical Oncology. One of theseexceptional Tec students ended up doing a year of postgraduateresearch here, and because she was such a desirable candidate, wewere extremely fortunate to attract her to our program for residencytraining. One day perhaps she will return home, taking with her the clinicaland research skills learned on our floors and in our labs and at theside of our faculty to directly impact the health and well-being of hercommunity.Charles Cummings, M.D.Executive Medical DirectorJohns Hopkins Medicine International 3

We rejectmore opportunities than wepursue. For example, last yearwe were in deep discussions witha group that wanted Hopkins tomanage a boutique Gyn/Obhospital with spa and resortamenities. It was a temptingproposition that includedsubstantial revenue for JohnsHopkins Medicine. But workingthrough our due diligenceprocess, we concluded thatthe project failed to meet ourstrategic objectives, and wewalked away. It was disappointingbecause we put a lot of hoursinto negotiations, but it justwasn’t right for us, and we haveno regrets.”—Mohan Chellappa, M.D.President, Global Ventures (center)
