Reflections from Fr. DerekDear Friends,2022-2023 is here! With Maine South High School students beginning this past week and ourown MSW School beginning this week, summer officially ends for many inour community. The MSW School Catholic Identity theme for this upcoming year is Mary. Throughout the year, our studentswill memorize Scripture passages and prayers that will help them love Mary more. They will do activities andlearn songs to help them understand her role in their lives. We’ll do a pilgrimage to St. Mary of the Lake(Mundelein Seminary) on the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary in October. Like the theme of last year onthe Eucharist, Marian devotion is one of the definitive characteristics of the Catholic faith. She has been calledthe “greatest woman who ever lived” and “our tainted nature’s solitary boast.” In giving her these and othertitles, the Church doesn’t hold back from giving her special honor. I’m very excited to see how ourcommunity’s devotion to Mary will increase over the year and beyond. She’s just so beautiful! Our students who attend public grade schools are invited to attend the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)program or participate in the Family Faith Formation program called Tuesday Nights Together (TNT). Newthis year is the Discover program, a child-centered apostolate that gathers about twice a month on Sundays.OLH will continue to register families in their pre-existing formation programs as well. All of the programshope to help families understand the immense love our Lord has for us and how he desires to be one with us,especially in the Eucharist. We hope that we are not just forming the next generation of future Catholics, butalso forming the young generation of today. Whereas for past generations attending weekly Sunday Mass wasa given, today there is much more pressure on families to protect Sundays as the Lord’s Day.Please join us in praying for all our students in whatever way they are connected to our parish. Below is aprayer by St. Thomas Aquinas, a doctor of the Church and among the biggest brains the world has everknown. He invokes our Lady’s help to grow in wisdom, knowledge, and grace.Mary, Seat of Wisdom,I choose you as my guardian and patron of my studies.I humbly ask you to obtain for me the grace of the Holy Spirit, so thatfrom now on I can understand more quickly, retain more readily, and express myself more fluently.May the example of my life serve to honor you and your Son, Jesus.Amen.Sincerely yours in Christ,Father DerekO UR L ADY OF H OPE CATHOLIC M ISSION2ROSEMONT, I LLINOIS

Welcome Colleen! As many of you know Our Lady of Hope Mission has been in the process ofinterviewing for a Mission Coordinator ‐ I would like to take this opportunity tointroduce myself: My name is Colleen Case. I have worked in ministry of our CatholicChurch for more than 20 years. I have worked as:Director of Student Ministries, building a youth ministry program where nonehad existed into a program serving hundreds of students and their families, fromJrH, to HS, to college and on into young adulthood.Campus Minister at Elmhurst (College) University.Director of Religious Educa on for a program of 500 families, 45 Catechists, and some 60Parent & Grandparent Volunteers. And most recently worked in the Diocese of Joliet as the Associate Director of the Office of Youth Forma on, and Direc‐tor of Teen Forma on, Confirma on, Catholic Scou ng and Athle cs in addi on to being assigned to Diocesan TaskForce for each of the three Bishops: Missionary Discipleship Team (MDT) Task ForceCOVID Protocols & Implementa on Task Force"Reunite" Team. Post COVID Reopening Task Force – working with our parishes ‐ training and equipping them toknow 'how do we invite our people back' a er this pandemic, to engage in their faith communi es, even be erthan they did before the pandemic’.But it is my role of working with our priests, forma on leaders and families of our 120 parishes as we navigated theever‐changing steps through the pandemic that truly crystallized the joy of the ‘Ministry of Accompaniment’. Not onlydid we help our parishes navigate all the COVID protocols, and the supply chain issues, costs, and budgets – how togather at Mass, in classrooms, in programs, etc., we were there for them as persons, and together we managed theever‐changing landscape of both ministry and mission. For all of us this has been a journey into a me and a place that most of us have never had to encounter.I think Pope Francis in his book 'Let us Dream' says it best, "From this pandemic (crisis) we can come out (either)be er or worse. We can slide back, or we can create something new". The pandemic has changed everything, "Weneed a movement of people who know that we need each other, have a sense of responsibility to others and to theworld''The reality is we are a people who have been on this long journey of change and transi on, and this journey is justbeginning. We have sisters and brothers whom we know should be part our faith community and are not.We the people of Our Lady of Hope and Mary Seat of Wisdom need to be a people who relentlessly invite others, whoshare our faith with others, and bring others along with us on this journey of life and faith. And this call to journey andaccompany others is not just for our priests, or professional laity, but it is the calling of each one of us, by virtue of ourBapƟsm.So, as we celebrate the 65th Anniversary of Our Lady of Hope, we thank Our Lord, and Our Lady of Hope for their guid‐ance, provision, and protec on these past 65 years, and we ask for their con nued protec on and provision, as well asinspira on, crea vity, and courage to step into the next 65 years, that we the people ofOur Lady of Hope and Mary Seat of Wisdom may serve God well and bring many souls into His Kingdom! I invite eachof us to ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with the inspira on, wisdom, and guidance to “Create Something New”!God ‐ Father, Son, and Holy Spirit ‐ Empower us!Mary ‐ Our Lady of Hope and Seat of Wisdom ‐ Pray for us!O UR L ADY OF H OPE CATHOLIC M ISSION3ROSEMONT, I LLINOIS

WorshipGOD’S PEOPLE GATHER‐ Twenty‐First Sunday of Ordinary TimeOur readings today remind us of the larger story of the Bible, of God’spurposes and promises for the world. Because of humanity’s rejec on of God,as told in Genesis, human communi es were first dispersed. Isaiah proclaimsthat one day God will gather these communi es to be healed and reconciledwith God. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus echoes Isaiah and teaches that all peoples inGod’s promised future “will recline at table in the kingdom of God.” No ce thatin Isaiah, the na ons coming to God do not lose their ethnicity or uniqueiden ty. They bring their own dis nct cultural gi s to God’s table. Each peoplehas its unique history with God, has received dis nct blessings from God, andeach is accountable to God. Today, we live in a global and mul ‐culturalChurch. When God’s diverse peoples gather in worship today, may we honorand celebrate each other’s gi s and blessings.Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.HUMILITY ‐ Twenty‐Second Sunday of Ordinary TimeToday’s readings praise the virtue of humility and offer concrete ways for usto become more humble. The Book of Sirach suggests a prac cal reason forac ng with humility: humble people are more likeable than the arrogant. EvenGod “finds favor” with those who humble themselves. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesusprovides real‐world sugges ons for growing in humility and teaches us neverto assume we are be er than others. His words change our outward behaviorand expand our hearts and minds to care about people we might have dis‐missed before. This prac cal, almost “folksy” wisdom about humility helps usbehave be er in daily life and makes our lo y goal of eternal life more accessi‐ble. Our reading from Hebrews affirms that heaven is indeed approachable. The personal love and sacrifice of Jesus have opened “the city of the livingGod” to us. Humility prepares us for paradise.Copyright J. S.
