P '( ! T (-# ' . Juliana of Liège was a religious sister of the early13th century. At one time in her prayer, she had a visionof the Church in all its beauty depicted as a full moon. There was one spot, however, a dark shadow, thatprevented this moon from showing its full light. Sheunderstood that this spot was a feast, a solemnity thatwas missing from the Church’s calendar. Inspired by thisencounter and charged by her own deep love of theBlessed Sacrament she worked and prayed for theestablishment of the Feast of Corpus Christi. It was Pope Urban IV who officially placed thecelebration of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body andBlood of Christ into the Church’s calendar. HisTransiturus, the official document in which he did so, isworthwhile for us to consider as we enter into this feastourselves: As he was about to ascend into heaven, he [Jesus]said to the Apostles and their helpers, I will bewith you all days even unto the consummation ofthe world. He comforted them with a graciouspromise that he would remain and would be withthem even by his corporeal presence. Thereforehe gave himself as nourishment, so that, sinceman fell by means of the food of the death givingtree; man is raised up by means of the food ofthe life giving tree. Eating wounded us, andeating healed us. Thus the Savior says, MyFlesh is real food. This bread is taken but trulynot consumed, because it is not transformed intothe eater. Rather, if it is worthily received, therecipient is conformed to it. Moreover we know that.it was divinely revealedto certain Catholics [such as St. Juliana] that afeast of this kind should be celebrated generallythroughout the Church. Therefore, to strengthenand exalt the Catholic Faith, we decree that, besides the daily memory that the Church makesof this Sacrament, there be celebrated a moresolemn and special annual memorial. Then let thehearts and mouths of all break forth in hymns ofsaving joy; then let faith sing, hope dance, charityexult, devotion applaud, the choir be jubilant, andpurity delight. Then let each one with willing spiritand prompt will come together, laudably fulfillinghis duties, celebrating the Solemnity of so greata Feast. The Pope’s challenge for us is a good one. If we trulybelieve that the Holy Eucharist is the living presence ofour God, then there should be no limit to the love, joyand excitement that we bring to this feast. Fr.
