DISTRICT 1199C TRAINING & UPGRADING FUNDSECURE YOUR FUTURE WITH EDUCATIONSUCCESS STORYNEW PROGRAMSFOR 2018-2019Janice Jackson-Munn, Temple University HospitalIt has been a 14-year career journey; butJanice Jackson-Munn has never waveredfrom her dream to become a nurse, “Backhome, before I came to this country, I workedfor a doctor and I was taking courses.” At20, Jackson-Munn came to the United Statesfrom Jamaica and began her career pathwayjourney, first, as a companion and then as anursing assistant.nurse and I used each of the jobs as astepping stone to the next level,” said Jackson-Munn. “I remember the days I was upto two and three o’clock in the morning andreading every book I could get my handson.”Not content to stop her education, she wentto school to become a practical nurse. Upongraduation she was hired by Temple University Health System and joined District 1199C.“Temple was hiring LPN’s and I went to workthere. I worked for five years and then I applied and got the scholarship in 2011.”As it turned out, Jackson-Munn’s timing forbecoming a nurse was just right. “I was oneof the lucky ones because Temple no longeruses LPN’s on the floors of the hospital.” Shereapplied for a RN position and was accepted into Temple’s New to Practice program– a mentoring program for newly-graduatednurses. “I am now working on the same floorwhere I started, with cardiac patients,” Jackson-Munn said.Jackson-Munn used the James T. Ryan FullTime Scholarship to attend Gwynedd MercyUniversity and was awarded her AssociateDegree in Nursing in 2013 and her BSN in2014. “The full-time scholarship was really abig help and the health benefits were too.I was determined to become a registeredIn the process, her salary has gone from 10per hour as a campanion to 44 per houras an experienced registered nurse. “I telleverybody, follow your dreams, and staycommitted. There will be sacrifices a lot ofsacrifice. It was a financial sacrifice for megoing to school but it was worth it.“SPD Technician (Supply, Processing& Distribution) This is an intensive program designed to prepare District 1199Cmembers to attain the CRCST certification (Certified Registered CentralService Technician) through IAHCSMM(International Association of HealthcareCentral Service Material Management).The program includes instruction and a400 hour clinical internship at a partnering hospital.Integrated Education & Training (IET)ESL Home Health Aide Program TheIET ESL Home Health Aide (HHA) Certificate Program provides ESL studentswith the opportunity to earn a credentialwhile learning civics and improvingtheir English, reading, and writing skillsas well as their mathematics skills.Students will be supported in obtainingemployment as a Home Health Aide,and supported in planning their nextcareer pathway move.UPCOMINGAPPRENTICESHIPSScience and Math PracticalNursing Prep In lieu of taking theTEAS (Test of Essential AcademicSkills) science and math portions, students may opt to take this class whichis offered at select times throughout theyear. Students must achieve a grade of80% in each class and attend all classesin order to get credit for the math andscience portions of the TEAS . Studentmust still take the reading and Englishportion of the TEAS and attain a proficient score.Temple Cares In partnership with Temple University and Temple UniversityHealth System, the Training Fund will beoffering Nurse Aide, Behavioral Healthand Medical Office Training to recentHigh School grads who are comingout of Career and Technical EducationHealthcare Programs. MEMBER SERVICESTUITION ASSISTANCE Workers covered by the Training Fund benefit are entitled to tuition assistance after six months of employment. Full-time membersmay receive up to 5,000 per year for approved college and vocational courses, workshops, and seminars. RYAN SCHOLARSHIP & STIPEND PROGRAMS Workers covered bythe Training Fund are eligible for this benefit after one year of full-time employment. The benefit includes a book and uniform allowance, continued healthand pension benefits for eligible members, a cost-of-living stipend and tuitionup to 10,000 per year of study in fields related to healthcare. The TrainingFund supports study for up to two years. COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS PROGRAMSPre-College Preparation ProgramsCOLLEGE ANDCAREER READINESSFoundation ProgramsFoundation Courses Students receivea rigorous basic skills review in reading,writing, and mathematics designed tohelp prepare them for post-secondaryeducation or job opportunities.Fast-Track High School Equivalency(HSE) Diploma Students are providedthe foundational knowledge to refreshhigh school academics and to pass theGED or the HiSET . The Fast-TrackHigh School Equivalency (HSE) Diplomaclass is an intensive and acceleratedprogram.Tutoring This small-group class offersinstruction for individuals who desirea semi-private setting to improve theirreading levels. APPRENTICESHIP ADVANTAGEThe Training Fund is a national trailblazer in the creation of Registered Apprenticeship programs in the healthcare and human services sector. All of our current Apprenticeships arethe first of their kind in the Philadelphia region.REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIPPROGRAMSDESCRIPTIONCommunity Health WorkerCommunity Health Workers (CHWs) serve asa bridge between high-risk, high-cost patientsand their health care providers with the goalof improving health outcomes.Early Childhood EducationThis program integrates the Early ChildhoodEducation (ECE) Associate’s Degree at Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) with onthe job learning.Direct Services Professional (Youth)This program includes a pre-apprenticeshipand an apprenticeship component. Completion of thisprogram also qualifies students to enterthe Associate’s Degree in Health andHuman Services at Thomas Jefferson(formerly Philadelphia) University and /or obtain college credits, which serveas an industry recognized credential.The Thomas Jefferson UniversityAssociate’s Degree articulates with aB.S. Degree in Behavioral Health and aM.S. Degree in Community and TraumaCounseling.Direct Support Professional (DSP)Pre-Apprenticeship & Apprenticeship ProgramThe Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Pre-Apprenticeship Program isgeared towards 18 to 24 year old young adults who are interested in pursuing a careerin the behavioral health field. Participants qualify for theAmerican Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification. Thiscourse prepares students for testing ontwo levels of certification: ALAT (Assistant LaboratoryAnimal Technician) LAT (Lab Animal Technician)Allied Health ProgramsRadiology Board Review CoursesThese review courses can be arrangedfor technologists who are planning totake an advanced certification examination in the following areas: MammographyComputer TomographyVascular TechnologyUltrasoundPharmacy Technician Program* Thispart-time course prepares students toassist the pharmacist in filling prescriptions in a variety of settings includinghospital, community, home infusion, andmail order pharmacies. This 4-monthcourse includes 54 hours of classroom instruction, 200 hours of clinicalexperience, and prepares students forthe pharmacy technician certificationexamination.Telemetry Technician Program* This3-month course includes 60 hours ofclassroom instruction and 24 hours ofclinical experience, providing studentswith basic theory and knowledge ofcardiac rhythms. Students develop theskills necessary to analyze and interpretnormal and abnormal cardiac rhythms ina clinical telemetry setting.NEW SPD Technician (Supply,Processing & Distribution) This is anintensive program designed to preparestudents to attain the CRCST certification (Certified Registered CentralService Technician) through IAHCSMM(International Association of HealthcareCentral Service Material Management).The program includes instruction anda 400 hour clinical internship at apartnering hospital. Lane also played an integral part in establishing anAnimal Care Technician certification class at the Training Fund. It also includes up to sevencomputer certifications as part of the International Computer Driver’s License program.EHRC is helpful for those in record-oriented positions such as Unit Clerks. It can alsohelp workers move into the health information field and prepare for higher level HealthInformation education and jobs such as Coding.COURSESINCLUDE Communications and Customer ServiceIntroduction to Medical TerminologyIntroduction to Health information/InformaticsInternational Computer Driving License (ICDL)Medical Insurance – Basics of Plans, Claims and ReimbursementBusiness writingAfter more than two decades at Thomas Jefferson Hospital, Thomasine Duckette knew she had toimprove her computer technology skills. “That’s why I completed the Training Fund’s Electronic HealthRecordCertificateprogram.Now& IUhavetheINcertificate20 DI STR I C T 1199CTR A I NI NGPGRADG FU N D to prove my certificate to prove my skills.”Community Health ProgramsCommunity Health Worker ProgramThis 150-hour program preparesstudents to work as community-basedhealthcare workers providing servicesand support to enhance the physicalhealth of patients suffering from chronicillness. Once trained, they motivateclients to engage in activities that willpromote their physical well-being.Graduates are employed in physicianpractices, health systems and community-based health centers.Nursing Programs Nurses at all levels,including Home Health Aide andPractical Nurses, will be called upon towork with home-bound patients to helpthem from becoming so sick they mustbe readmitted to the hospital. For moreinformation, see page 14.Electronic Health Records Certificate Program (EHRC) This part-time,40-week program provides instructionon the electronic health record, strongcomputer proficiency and a credential– Digital Patient Record Certification.It also includes up to seven computercertifications as part of the International Driver’s License program. Rayan Full-time scholarship allowed Cheryl Bazemore to complete a dream she started at18 years old – graduating from college. She recently received her bachelor’s degree from Montclair StateUniversity. “This scholarship was a wonderful opportunity. It allowed me to attend school full time by takingan educational leave from work.
