Accountants can work independently or as part of a firm. Beyond carryingout the fundamental tasks of the occupation—preparing, analyzing, and verifying financialdocuments in order to provide information forclients—many accountants also offer budgetanalysis, financial and investment planning,information technology consulting, and limitedlegal services.WHAT IS THE EMPLOYMENTOUTLOOK FOR THIS CAREER?Public accountants perform a broad rangeof accounting, auditing, tax, and consultingactivities for their clients, which can includecorporations, governments, non-profit organi-WHAT DO ACCOUNTANTS EARN?Accountants and auditors held 1.2 million jobsin 2012. They worked throughout the privateindustry and government, but 25 percent of wageand salary accountants worked for accounting,tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payrollservices firms. Accounting jobs are expected togrow steadily as the economy expands, resultingin stricter accounting and auditing regulations,and thus, more accountants (source: www.bls.gov/ooh).The median annual wage for accountants andauditors was 63,550 in May 2012. The medianwage is the wage at which half the workers in anoccupation earned more than that amount andhalf earned less. Salaries will vary depending onlocation, size of firm, level of education, and professional credentials (source: www.bls.gov/ooh).WHY SHOULD I COME TO HCC?HCC is an institution that focuses on its students. The program is structured for students tofocus on their preferred field of study or coursesof interest, so that their studies may be closelyrelated to their particular needs and may possiblybe applied to higher academic objectives.Managers have a wide range of responsibilitiesdepending on their organization. Administrative AssistantWHAT DOES AN ADMINISTRATIVEASSISTANT DO?WHY SHOULD I ATTEND HCC?HCC offers short-term preparation for yourcareer change and allows you to enhance officeskills for entry-level positions.Administrative assistant positions involve activities such as being an information manager for anoffice, scheduling meetings and appointments,organizing and maintaining paper and electronicfiles, managing projects, conducting research,providing information to internal and externalcustomers, preparing correspondence, handlingtravel arrangements, and using software applications. Proficiency in keyboarding, spelling,punctuation, and grammar skills is expected,along with oral communication and multitaskingskills. Workplace skills include coordination,problem identification, information organization, time management, and management offinancial resources.Credit-by-exam testing is available for somecourses.
