PHILOSOPHYHISTORYUH West O‘ahu provides an environmentfor students and faculty to embark ona journey of discovery that improvesthe quality of life for our citizens. UHWest O‘ahu has moved into a newphase of growth with the transition toa full four-year university in 2007. Theexpanded capacity allows UH West O‘ahuto serve both regional and statewideeducational needs. The programs of theUniversity are designed to be responsiveto the needs of our students. UH WestO‘ahu faculty is engaged in three basictypes of activities: teaching, research,and service. Our staff and faculty arededicated to the needs of students inthe pursuit of their educational andprofessional goals through a curriculumemphasizing the humanities, socialsciences and selected professionalprograms. The University’s curriculumofferings are founded on the principlethat career training, the humanities, andsocial sciences are complementary.UH West O‘ahu, the most recent addition to the UH system, opened its doors inJanuary 1976 as West O‘ahu College. The name of the institution was changed tothe University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu by the Board of Regents in 1989.The University of Hawai‘i is a 10 campus system of higher education institutionsserving the State of Hawai‘i. The system includes three baccalaureate degreegranting institutions - UH West O‘ahu, a comprehensive four-year campuslocated on the leeward side of O‘ahu; UH Hilo which is located on the island ofHawai‘i; and UH Mānoa, which is the only Research I (Extensive) institutionon O‘ahu. The system also includes seven community colleges - four on O‘ahu:Honolulu Community College, Kapi‘olani Community College, LeewardCommunity College, and Windward Community College; and three on theneighbor islands: Hawai‘i Community College, Kaua‘i Community College, andthe University of Hawai‘i Maui College.The mission of the UH system is to provide quality post-secondary educationand training; create knowledge through research and scholarship; provideservice through extension, technical assistance, and training; contribute to thecultural heritage of the community; and respond to the State needs.Governance of the University of Hawai‘i is vested in the Board of Regents,which is appointed by the Governor. The Board in turn appoints the Presidentof the UH system, who is the chief executive officer and is responsible forthe educational leadership of the UH system. General information can be found online at westoahu.hawaii.edu or by emailing uhwo.admissions@hawaii.edu.The following regulations and procedures are subject to changewithout prior notice. Prospective students should consult themost current General Catalog and/or an Admissions Counselorbefore applying for admission.Admission of Freshman ApplicantsStudents applying for admission as freshmen must submit anapplication and official high school transcripts. Applicantsshould meet the following requirements with a minimumcumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 (on a 4.0 scale)based on the following 22 units: 4 English units 3 Mathematics units (including Geometry and Algebra II) 3 Natural Science units 3 Social Studies units 4 College Preparatory units (e.g., foreign language, fine arts) 5 Elective unitsApplicants who do not meet the minimum 2.7 cumulative GPAor the minimum 22 credits of course work will be evaluatedon SAT or ACT scores. Additionally, applicants may be requiredto submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher and/orcounselor and a one-page personal essay to facilitate the evaluationof their application. (Essay topic: tell us about yourself and explainwhy you have chosen UH West O‘ahu for your academic studies.)Admission of Homeschooled ApplicantsApplicants who have been homeschooled are expected to meet theadmission criteria required of other applicants. Homeschooled122019-20 UH WEST O’AHU GENERAL CATALOGapplicants must submit a transcript that includes titles anddescriptions of all course work completed, textbooks used,methods of teaching, and evaluation, and the resulting gradesor structured assessments. SAT or ACT scores are stronglyencouraged. Homeschooled applicants should contact the Officeof Admissions for additional information.Admission of GED ApplicantsApplicants who have received their General EducationDevelopment (GED) diploma may apply for admission to UHWest O‘ahu. GED applicants should submit an application andhave their transcripts and test results sent directly to UH WestO‘ahu for review. In addition, applicants should submit a letter ofrecommendation from their employer or counselor and a one-pagepersonal essay to facilitate the evaluation of their application. SATor ACT test scores are strongly encouraged.Admission of Transfer ApplicantsTransfer students are those presently or previously enrolled at acollege or university other than UH West O‘ahu. A student whohas successfully completed at least 24 college-level transferablesemester credits at a regionally accredited institution may beeligible for admission as a transfer student. A GPA of 2.0 or higheron a 4.0 scale is required. Students with fewer than 24 collegelevel semester credits, or who previously attended an unaccreditedinstitution, will be evaluated under freshman admissionrequirements.Admission of Returning ApplicantsA student who experienced a break in enrollment at UHWest O‘ahu (without an approved leave of absence), mustapply for readmission. A student who attended anothercollege or university, including UH campuses, subsequentto attendance at UH West O‘ahu must apply as a transferstudent (see “Admission of Transfer Applicants”). A student

Readmissionis not automatic due to enrollment limitations and changesin academic regulations. All official transcripts must be maileddirectly by the institution or Ministry of Education tothe Office of Admissions. Documents mailed or handcarried by you or anyone else will not be accepted asofficial or used for admission consideration. Secondary school transcripts must include a list ofcourses taken and grades/internal marks received eachyear, class rank for the last four years of secondaryschool, and an explanation of the school’s gradingsystem. If transcripts with annual internal marks areunavailable directly from the school, you may photocopyyour mark sheets or grade reports and have themcertified by a school official who verifies that a transcriptis otherwise not available. Post-secondary school transcripts must include a list ofcourses taken, grades/marks received, number of hoursspent in each class per term, explanation of the school’sgrading system, and your rank in class. You may alsobe asked to provide course descriptions and a list oftextbooks used in each course. Photocopies of external examination certificates must becertified by a school or Ministry of Education official orissued by the examining board and be sent directly to theOffice of Admissions. All documents must be in English or accompanied by anEnglish translation that has been certified by a school orMinistry of Education official.2. Applicants with an ACT English score of 22 orhigherTest of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)* TOEFL scores for applicants from countries whereEnglish is not their primary language must be sentdirectly to UH West O‘ahu from Educational TestingServices. The minimum score for admission:o Paper – 550 or higher Grade of C or better in English 100 or equivalent(as determined by the UH West O’ahu Office ofAdmissions* In addition to the TOEFL, an EIKEN Grade Pre-1 scoreis also acceptable.3.University of Hawai‘i Supplementary InformationFormThe University of Hawai‘i Supplementary InformationForm for Undergraduate International Applicants mustalso be completed. Applicants must provide current officialdocumentation that sufficient financial support is availableto adequately cover tuition and expenses while attendingthe University. F-1 students must provide a certified bankstatement in U.S. dollars signed within the last 6 monthsattesting to financial support of 40,345 for the 2019-2020academic year.Students must carry complete health insurance for the durationof their studies at the University.The I-20 form, required by the United States Department ofHomeland Security and Customs and Border Protection for astudent visa, will be issued by the University after the specialrequirements outlined above are fulfilled, and the student hasbeen accepted for admission.International students are encouraged to submit applicationforms and supporting documentation as early as possible toallow adequate time for evaluation by the University.Admission of UnclassifiedNon-Degree Seeking ApplicantsIndividuals who wish to enroll in UH West O‘ahu courses butmay not seek to obtain a degree or certificate may apply foradmission as an unclassified, non-degree seeking student. Allapplicants must submit an UH System online application atapply.hawaii.edu. In addition, students are required to submitdocumentation (e.g., transcripts, grade reports) to verifyprerequisites for the course they intend to register for.International visa students are not eligible for unclassified,2019-20 UH WEST O’AHU GENERAL CATALOG13
