The regatta benefits Riverside Hospice. The regatta offers a two-dayrace and weekend of fun for thesailors. To be eligible, the boatdesign must be at least 25 yearsold. All wooden sailboats, ofany vintage, are eligible torace.“This regatta has, at time, been the largest HospiceRegatta in the country,” saidKnull. “We hope to continuethat trend this year with at least125 boats participating in theregatta.”Shore side activities willinclude a return visit by theGodspeed from the JamestownFoundation. While the Godspeed is here, the sailing masterand crew members will provideguided tours to all fourth-gradestudents in Lancaster County, said regatta chairman KarenKnull. The replica tall ship, commissioned in 2006, will beopen for tours to event visitorsas well, noted Lin McCarthy.Principal race officer JohnMcCarthy joked when he said,“Godspeed won’t be racingthis year and we’re a little bitrelieved that we don’t haveto come up with a [handicapracing] rating for her.” Regattaofficials may not get off soeasy next year— there is talk ofinviting more than one tall shipto join Godspeed and adding aspecial race for them. This year, there will be threemajor fleets. The more seriousracers compete in the LightningDivision and the more casualracers in the Flying CloudDivisions, said Lin McCarthy. On Saturday, boats race ona standard drop mark racecourse in the RappahannockRiver off the Corrotoman. OnSunday, there is a grand pursuit race, where the slowerboats start first based on theirracing handicap numbers. This year, for the first time, the Flying Cloud Division willbe divided in an effort to giveboats, especially in the Sundayrace, an opportunity to compete against like boats over adistance appropriate to theirspeed capability, she said. The change is made in favorof better competition amongthe diverse Turkey ShootRegatta boats. At the end ofthe regatta, each of the division winners of Lightning,Flying Cloud A, and FlyingCloud B will be named on theregatta trophy. To register for the competition, go to yankeepointmarina.com or turkeyshootregatta.com.*AN *AMROG DISPLAYS HISWINNING 3PANISH MACKEREL actually a three-way tie in theSpanish mackerel category, said Hudson.
