PrefaceNow the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received themessage with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if theseteachings were true. – Acts 17:11The Berean Bible is a completely new translation of the Holy Bible, based on the bestavailable manuscripts and sources. Each word is connected back to the Greek or Hebrewtext, resulting in a transparent and honest text that can be studied for its root meanings. The Berean Study Bible text is the result of a meticulous translation and styling processto maintain core meanings and produce an English text of high literary quality, effectivefor public reading, study, memorization, and evangelism.Additionally, we believe that the Scriptures are meant to be studied and shared freely.Just as Paul encouraged the churches to pass on his letters, we are developing digitalresources that will be free to access and free to share in websites, apps and software. The Berean Bible incorporates four main components:1. An interlinear Bible to directly follow the Greek and Hebrew texts.2. A literal translation to take the reader to the core of the Greek and Hebrew meanings.3. A modern English translation, effective for public reading, memorization, andevangelism.4. An emphasized translation to bring out the full meaning and intensity of the originaltexts. All sources are freely available and linked through to the original source, making the multitiered translation process an “open translation.” In other words, the source behind thetranslation is clear and available to all. The translation databases and lexical informationare freely available at the Berean Bible websites. This opens the translation process evento those without extensive training in Greek and Hebrew. The four tiers also provide study support by enhancing the expression of meaning onmultiple levels. Since languages often do not translate in a one to one fashion, the multipletiers express a fuller meaning that is able to contain both “word for word” and “thoughtfor thought” renderings.

Berean Interlinear BibleThe interlinear gloss is a word for word, original word order rendering based on the mostreliable Greek and Hebrew sources. This text also contains complete parsing tags, as wellas Strong’s numbers to for easy reference to lexicons. The following elements are included for each word of the interlinear:1. Greek or Hebrew text2. Transliteration3. Morphology: Part of Speech – Person, Tense, Mood, Voice – Case, Number, Gender,Comparison4. English Gloss5. Strong’s Number6. Lexical definition7. Punctuation: Both the Greek text source and, separately, the English gloss arepunctuated to assist in reading and understanding.Berean Literal BibleThe second step in the translation process was the development of a word for wordEnglish word order text with the following features:1. Parts of speech match as closely as possible in translation from Greek to English.2. Tense, mood, and voice of verbs are maintained as closely as possible.3. All tags from the interlinear are maintained so that the word for word translation canbe connected back to each element of the original text.4. Gender is translated to be consistent with the original sources (This is also maintainedin the Interlinear, Study, and Emphasized Bibles).5. Pronouns that represent Deity are capitalized for clearer study of difficult passages(This format is maintained from the Interlinear through to the Study and EmphasizedBibles).6. Sentence structure is maintained so that, in general, the flow of the longer Greeksentences is not interrupted in the translation to the literal version.

Berean Study BibleAs the interlinear and literal versions were refined, they were strenuously transformedinto a smooth text in modern English. The goal was to maintain a high level of readabilityalong with core meaning integrity. This process involved several full rounds of editing and translating in order to develop atext with a high literary quality that does not compromise accuracy. This method ensuredthat as literal a text as possible would be maintained, while offering a syntax and flowthat are well suited as a modern literary tool.Quite importantly, it was required that the translation stay consistent with the coremeanings of the original sources. All links and paths back through the translation processare maintained, as the Study Bible links back to each literal rendering and Greek or Hebrewroot. Additionally, the Study Bible makes generous use of section headings and paragraphformatting, to meet the needs of the modern reader.Berean Emphasized BibleAs work on the BSB progressed, the desire arose to further and more fully express theemphases, nuances, and style of the original texts. The Berean Emphasized Bible is under construction for both the Old and New Testaments, and will be a wonderful tool for readers, students, teachers, and pastors alike. Thetranslation is designed to bring out the full meaning, intensity, and clarity of the originalGreek and Hebrew sources.Publication and SharingAnother significant goal of the project is to share a Bible text that is as free as possiblefrom licensing and publishing constraints. While a copyright is necessary to ensure thatthere are not multiple variants of the same version, we intend to enable royalty-freepublishing of digital resources and generous licensing for use in print. Since we believethat a translation must be directly connected to the Greek and Hebrew roots, the toolsand data for these connections are freely available as well.Free licensing for use of the full text in software, apps, and websites is available throughone or more of the following Berean Bible websites:

Significant variants between critical texts have beendocumented and taken into consideration for translation, along with additional manuscriptevidence. Please see the Berean Bible website for full documentation of Greek and Hebrewsources.Translation CommitteeThe Berean Bible Translation Committee is comprised of members who have devotedmuch of their lives to sharing and translating the Scriptures. Please see the Berean Biblehomepage for a full description of the translation committee and process. We pray that this text will enable readers to connect with God’s word to study it, memorizeit, share it, and proclaim it. We are inspired by the model of the early Christian church:After this letter has been read among you, make sure that it is also read in the church ofthe Laodiceans, and that you in turn read the letter from Laodicea. – Colossians 4:16The Scriptures belonged to the church and were meant to be examined, copied, anddistributed. We hope to be able to live up to this example with all the resources we havebeen entrusted to pass on.

MatthewMatthew 1The Genealogy of Jesus(Ruth 4:18-22; Luke 3:23-38)1The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham:2 Abrahambegat Isaac, and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob begat Judah and his brothers.3 AndJudah begat Perez and Zerah out of Tamar, and Perez begat Hezron, and Hezron begat Ram.4 AndRam begat Amminadab, and Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon.5 AndSalmon begat Boaz out of Rahab, and Boaz begat Obed out of Ruth, and Obed begat Jesse,6 and Jesse begat David the king.Next:David begat Solomon, out of the wife of Uriah,Solomon begat Rehoboam, and Rehoboam begat Abijah, and Abijah begat Asa.7 and8 AndAsa begat Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat begat Joram, and Joram begat Uzziah.9 AndUzziah begat Jotham, and Jotham begat Ahaz, and Ahaz begat Hezekiah.10 AndHezekiah begat Manasseh, and Manasseh begat Amos,

and Amos begat Josiah,11 and Josiah begat Jechoniah and his brothersat the time of the carrying away to Babylon.12 Andafter the carrying away to Babylon:Jechoniah begat Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begat Zerubbabel,13 and Zerubbabel begat Abiud, and Abiud begat Eliakim, and Eliakim begat Azor.14 AndAzor begat Zadok, and Zadok begat Achim, and Achim begat Eliud.15 AndEliud begat Eleazar, and Eleazar begat Matthan, and Matthan begat Jacob,16 And Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary,of whom was born Jesus, the One being called Christ.all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and fromDavid until the carrying away to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the carrying awayto Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.17 SoThe Birth of Jesus(Isaiah 7:10-16; Micah 5:1-6; Luke 2:1-7)18 Nowthe birth of Jesus Christ came about in this way: His mother Mary, having beenpledged to Joseph, before their coming together, was found holding in womb through theHoly Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being righteous and not willing to shame herpublicly, resolved to divorce her quietly.on his having pondered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to himin a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, you should not be afraid to receive Mary asyour wife, for that having been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 And she willbring forth a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from theirsins.”20 But22 Andall this has come to pass, so that it may be fulfilled that having been spoken by theLord through the prophet, saying,23 “Behold, the virgin will hold in womb, and will bring forth a son,

and they will call His name Immanuel”awhich is, being translated, “God with us.”Joseph, having been awoken from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord hadcommanded him and received his wife. 25 But he did not know her until she had broughtforth a Son, and he called His name Jesus.24 Anda 23 Isaiah 7:14Matthew 2The Pilgrimage of the MagiJesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold,Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is the One having been bornKing of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”1 NowKing Herod having heard this, was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 Andhaving assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he was inquiring of themwhere the Christ was to be born.3 And5 Andthey said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus has it been written through theprophet:6 ‘Andyou, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come forth One leading, who will shepherd My people Israel.’a ”7 ThenHerod, having called the Magi secretly, inquired of them the exact time of the starappearing. 8 And having sent them to Bethlehem, he said, “Having gone, search carefullyfor the Child; and when You shall have found Him, bring word back to me, so that I alsohaving come, may worship Him.”9 Andhaving heard the king, they departed. And behold, the star they had seen in the eastwent before them until, having arrived, it stood over the place where the Child was. 10 Andhaving seen the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. 11 And having come intothe house, they found the Child with His mother Mary, and having fallen down, theyworshiped Him. And having opened their treasures, they offered to Him gifts, gold andfrankincense and myrrh.12 Andhaving been divinely warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew intotheir own country by another route.

The Flight to Egypt(Hosea 11:1-7)of them having withdrawn, behold, an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in adream saying, “Having arisen, take the Child and His mother, and flee into Egypt, andremain there until I should tell you, for Herod is about to seek the Child to destroy Him.”13 And14 Andhaving arisen, he took the Child and His mother by night and withdrew into Egypt, there he remained until the death of Herod, so that it might be fulfilled what hadbeen spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I have called mySon.”b15 andThe Slaughter of Infants(Jeremiah 31:1-30)16 ThenHerod, having seen that he had been outwitted by the Magi, was intenselyenraged. And having sent forth, he put to death all the boys in Bethlehem and in all itsvicinity from two years old and under, according to the time he had ascertained from theMagi. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah, saying:18 “Avoice was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning,Rachel weeping for her children;and she would not be comforted, because they are not.”cThe Return to Nazareth(Isaiah 61:1-11; Matthew 13:53-58; Mark 6:1-6; Luke 2:39-40; Luke 4:16-30)of Herod having died, behold, an angel of the Lord appears in a dream to Joseph inEgypt, 20 saying, “Having arisen, take the Child and His mother and go into the land ofIsrael; for those seeking the life of the Child have died.”19 Buthaving arisen, he took the Child and His mother and came into the land of Israel.22 And having heard that Archelaus reigns over Judea in place of his father Herod, he wasafraid to go there. And having been divinely warned in a dream, he withdrew into thedistrict of Galilee. 23 And having come, he dwelt in a city being called Nazareth, so that itshould be fulfilled that having been spoken through the prophets, that “He will be calleda Nazarene.”21 Anda 6 Micah 5:2,4b 15 Hosea 11:1c 18 Jeremiah 31:15Matthew 3

The Mission of John the Baptist(Isaiah 40:1-5; Mark 1:1-8; Luke 3:1-20; John 1:19-28)1 Nowin those days John the Baptist comes, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 andsaying, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.” 3 For this is the onehaving been spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying,“A voice of one crying in the wilderness:‘Prepare the way of the Lord;make straight His paths.’”a4 AndJohn himself had his garment of camel’s hair, and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 At that time were going out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan, 6 and confessing their sins, were beingbaptized by him in the Jordan River.7 Buthaving seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said tothem, “Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Thereforeproduce fruit worthy of repentance. 9 And do not presume to say within yourselves, ‘Wehave Abraham as father.’ For I say to you that out of these stones God is able to raise upchildren unto Abraham. 10 Already now the ax is applied to the root of the trees. Thereforeevery tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.indeed baptize you withb water unto repentance, but after me is coming He who ismightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to carry the sandals. He will baptize you withthe Holy Spirit and with fire, 12 whose winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will clear Histhreshing floor and will gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff withunquenchable fire.”11 IThe Baptism of Jesus(Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:29-34)13 ThenJesus comes from Galilee to the Jordan, unto John, to be baptized by him. 14 ButJohn was hindering Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You cometo me?”Jesus answering, said unto him, “Permit it presently; for thus it is fitting to us tofulfill all righteousness.” Then he permits Him.15 But16 Andimmediately, having been baptized, Jesus went up from the water; and behold, theheavens were openedc and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and alightingupon Him. 17 And behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, “This is my Son, the beloved,in whom I was well pleased.”

For it has been written:‘He will give orders to His angels concerning You,and will they bear You up in their hands, lest ever You strike Your footagainst a stone.’b ”7 Jesussaid to him, “Again it has been written: ‘You shall not test the Lord your God.’c ”8 Againthe devil takes Him to a mountain exceedingly high and shows to Him all thekingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he says to Him, “All these things I will giveto You, if falling down, You will worship me.”10 ThenJesus says to him, “Get you away, Satan! For it has been written: ‘You shallworship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.’d ”11 Thenthe devil leaves Him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to Him.Jesus Begins His Ministry(Isaiah 9:1-7; Mark 1:14-15; Luke 4:14-15)12 Andhaving heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee. 13 And havingleft Nazareth, having come, he dwelt at Capernaum, on the sea-side in the region of

Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 that it might be fulfilled that having been spoken through theprophet Isaiah, saying:15 “Landof Zebulun and land of Naphtali, way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,Galilee of the Gentiles—16 the people sitting in darkness have seen a great light, and to those sitting in the land and shadow of death,a light has dawned on them.”e17 Fromthat time Jesus began to proclaim and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of theheavens has drawn near!”The First Disciples(Matthew 13:47-52; Mark 1:16-20; Luke 5:1-11; John 1:35-42)18 Nowwalking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, andhis brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And He says tothem, “Come follow after Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 And immediatelyhaving left the nets, they followed Him.having gone on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedeeand his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. And Hecalled them, 22 and immediately having left the boat and their father they followed Him.21 AndJesus Heals the Multitudes(Luke 6:17-19)23 AndHe was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaimingthe gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among thepeople. 24 And the news of Him went out into all Syria. And they brought to Him all thesick having various diseases and oppressing pains, and being possessed by demons, andhaving seizures, and paralytics—and He healed them.there followed Him great crowds from Galilee, and the Decapolis,f and Jerusalem, and Judea, and beyond the Jordan.25 Anda 4 Deuteronomy 8:3b 6 Psalm 91:11,12c 7 Deuteronomy 6:16d 10 Deuteronomy 6:13e 15-16 Isaiah 9:1,2f 25 That is, the Ten CitiesMatthew 5

The Sermon on the Mount1 Andhaving seen the crowds, He went up on the mountain. And He having sat down, Hisdisciples came to Him, 2 and opening His mouth, He was teaching them, saying:The Beatitudes(Psalm 1:1-6; Luke 6:20-23)3 “Blessedare the poor in the spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.4 Blessed are those mourning, for they will be comforted.5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.6 Blessed are those hungering and thirsting for righteousness, for they will be filled.7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.10 Blessed are those having been persecuted on account of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.are you when they shall insult you and shall persecute you, and lying shall sayall kinds of evil against you on account of Me. 12 Rejoice and exult, because great is yourreward in the heavens; for thus they persecuted the prophets before you.11 BlessedSalt and Light(Philippians 2:12-18)13 Youare the salt of the earth, but if the salt becomes tasteless, with what will it be salted. For nothing is it potent any longer except, having been cast out, to be trampled upon bymen.14 Youare the light of the world. A city lying on a hill is unable to be hidden. 15 Nor do theylight a lamp and put it under a basket, but upon the lampstand, and it gives light to allthose in the house. 16 Thus let your light shine before men, so that they may see yourgood works and they should glorify your Father in the heavens. The Fulfillment of the Law17 Donot think that I have come to abolish the law or the Prophets. I have not come toabolish, but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth shall pass away, not

even one iota, nor one stroke of a letter, shall pass away from the law, until everythingshould happen.19 Whoeverthen shall break one of the least of these commandments and shall teachothers the same, he will be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whoever shallkeep and shall teach them, he will be called great in the kingdom of the heavens. 20 For Isay to you that unless your righteousness shall abound above that of the scribes andPharisees, you shall never enter into the kingdom of the heavens.Anger and Reconciliation(Luke 12:57-59)21 Youhave heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘You shall not murder’ and ‘Whoevershall murder will be liable to the judgment.’a 22 But I say to you that everyone being angrywith his brotherb will be liable to the judgment, and whoever shall say to his brother‘Raca,’c will be liable to the Sanhedrin. But whoever shall say, ‘Fool!’ will be liable to theGehenna of fire.23 Therefore,if you shall offer your gift at the altar, and there shall remember that yourbrother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and first goaway, be reconciled to your brother; and then having come, offer your gift.25 Beagreeing quickly with your accuser while you are on the way with him, lest ever theaccuser deliver you to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you will be cast intoprison. 26 Truly I say to you, you shall not come out from there until you should pay thelast kodranten!dAdultery(Leviticus 18:1-30)27 Youhave heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’e 28 But I say to youthat everyone looking upon a woman in order to lust after her already has committedadultery with her in his heart. 29 And if your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it outand cast it from you. For it is better for you that one of your members should perish andnot that your whole body should be cast into Gehenna. 30 And if your right hand causesyou to stumble, cut it off and cast it from you, for it is better for you that one of yourmembers should perish and not that your whole body should depart into Gehenna.Divorce(Deuteronomy 24:1-5; Luke 16:18-18)31 Itwas also said, ‘Whoever shall divorce his wife, let him give her a letter of divorce.’f32 But I say to you that everyone divorcing his wife, except on account of sexualimmorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever shall marry her who has beendivorced commits adultery.

Oaths and Vows(Numbers 30:1-16)33 Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘You shall not swear falsely, butyou shall keep your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you not to swear at all: neither byheaven, because it is the throne of God; 35 nor by the earth, because it is the footstool ofHis feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shall youswear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black. 37 But letyour statement ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything more than these comes from evil.gLove Your Enemies(Leviticus 24:17-23; Luke 6:27-36)38 Youhave heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’h 39 But I tell you notto resist the evil person. Instead, whoever shall strike you on your right cheek, turn tohim the other also. 40 And to the one willing to sue you and to take your tunic, yield tohim the cloak as well. 41 And whoever shall compel you to go one mile, go with him two.42 Give to the one asking of you, and you shall not turn away from the one desiring toborrow from you.43 Youhave heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’i44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those persecuting you,j 45 so that youmay be sons of your Father in the heavens. For He makes His sun rise on evil and good, and He sends rain on righteous and unrighteous. 46 For if you love those loving you, whatreward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet onlyyour brothers, what extraordinary are you doing? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?48 You shall be perfect, therefore, as your Heavenly Father is perfect.a 21 Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17b 22 BYZ and TR include without causec 22 An Aramaic expression of contemptd 26 A roman copper coin worth about 1/64 of a denariuse 27 Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18f 31 Deuteronomy 24:1g 37 Or from evilh 38 Exodus 21:24; Leviticus 24:20; Deuteronomy 19:21i 43 Leviticus 19:18j 44 BYZ and TR bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who despitefully accuse you, andpersecute youMatthew 6Giving to the Needy(Deuteronomy 15:7-11)

1 Andbeware not to do your righteousness before men in order to be seen by them.Otherwise you have no reward in the presence of your Father in the heavens.2 Thereforewhen you perform acts of charity, do not sound a trumpet before you as thehypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory frommen. Truly I say to you, they have their recompense. 3 But you, doing acts of charity, donot let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be insecret. And your Father, the One seeing in secret, will reward you.The Lord's Prayer(Luke 11:1-4)5 Andwhen you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standingin the synagogues and on the corners of the streets so that they might be seen by men.Truly I say to you, they have their recompense. 6 But you when you pray, enter into yourinner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father, the One in secret. And yourFather, the One seeing in secret, will reward you.7 Andpraying, do not use vain repetitions like the pagans, for they think that in their manywords they will be heard. 8 Therefore do not be like to them, for your Father knows ofwhat things you have need before your asking Him.9 Thereforepray you like this:‘Our Father in the heavens, hallowed be Your name!10 Your kingdom come.Your will be doneas in heaven, so also upon earth.11 Our daily bread, grant us today.12 And forgive us our debts,as we also have forgiven our debtors.13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’a14 Forif you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 Butif you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.Proper Fasting16 Andwhenever you fast, do not be downcast in countenance like the hypocrites, for theydisfigure their faces so that they might appear to men as fasting. Truly I say to you, theyhave their recompense. 17 But you fasting, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so thatyou might not appear to men as fasting, but to your Father, the One in secret. And yourFather, the One seeing in secret, will reward you.
