Alternative Shabbat Morning ServiceAs many of you may know, this month we started a Shabbat morning serviceparallel to the service in our main sanctuary. This service grew out of a desire for anintimate setting for members of the congregation to study, pray, and share togetheron Shabbat. Our services are led by members of the congregation, with assistancefrom Rabbi Burstein. Each week, a different person is responsible for either leadingthe service or giving a drash (explanation of the Torah portion) or reading from theTorah. We hope that you will join us in a meaningful and spiritual atmospherewhere we can share the delight of Shabbat together. Our Shabbat morning minyan services will be held the first Shabbat of each month and begin at 10:15AM in the library. We encourage you to bring a vegetarian dish to share for lunch following services. In that way, those who would like can extend the sense of community and Shabbat. If you would like more information about services or would like to participate, please contact RabbiBurstein in the Temple office at 532-2217.OCTOBER 2 - 10:15 AMTZEDAKAHFor those of you who heard Rabbi Burstein's sermon on Rosh Hashanah morning, youknow the importance of tzedakah in our lives as Jews. As noted in his sermon, a seriesof articles in the bulletin will address some suggestions and opportunities for tzedakahThis month focuses on Socially Responsible Investments. The following comes from theReform Judaism website on the World Wide Web (http://www.rj.org ). Look in nextmonth's bulletin for the Reform Movement's response to Socially Responsible Investments.(What is Socially Responsible Investment?Do you think before you buy? What kinds of companies do you support? Can your money really makea difference? Socially responsible investment (SRI), moral financial investing, is founded on the conceptthat investments do make a difference and can be a way of creating positive and effective socialchange. To practice SRI means to adopt a "double bottom line" -- first, with the rate of return andsecond, with regard to the consonance of the investing organization's values and the entities in whichit invests.Broadly, socially responsible investment falls into three categories. The investor can use his/her investments to promote corporations/ organizations whose activities and policies he/she considers to bemoral and/or whose agenda includes socially responsible activities (for example low-income housingprojects and community development banks). Second, the investor can consciously decide not to investin corporations whose activities or policies he/she considers to be immoral and socially detrimental. Finally, the investor, as a stockholder in a corporation, can seek to bring the corporation's policies intoagreement with the investor's values.

Rabbi's Message.Dear Friends,It is with great pride and pleasure that I sharewith you the news that our congregation isreaching out to support other congregations inneed. There is no question that we are a community blessed with rich resources - we havegreat programs, creative events as well asfinancial means. As many of you know, thereare dozens of congregations who would benefitgreatly from some of these resources. Evenbefore hearing the inspiring sermon by RabbiBurstein about reaching out to support others, the Board of IRS set out on this path. Our first attempts to support other congregations are manifest in two ways. First, I havemade a commitment to provide rabbinic services to one small congregation in the U.S. forone weekend a year. This is a program organized by the UAHC in which larger congregations help out those who are less well off.Senior rabbis (who have assistants who cancover for them) spend a Shabbat leading services and teaching at their own expense. TheTRS board approved this as a worthy use of ourfunds.Second, we have been called upon to supportliberal congregations abroad, many of whichare seen as second class Jews in a communitywhere Orthodoxy reigns. In response to this Isought out a Reform congregation in Londonnear the home of my in-laws. I have gotten toknow Rabbi Danny Rich at the Kingston LiberalSynagogue. We have decided to "twin" ourcongregations. I hope our eleven-hundredfamily community will have a lot to offer theirmuch smaller but equally vibrant three hundredfamily Temple. Finally, it is my hope that during the adult tripto Israel this spring, we will make a connectionto one of the four congregations that we visit. Our Israeli cousins certainly need our supportas well.Cont. on page 21JiJoin Us as We Celebrate.EREV SIMCHAT TORAH/CONSECRATION CELEBRATIONFAMILY SHABBATSing! Rdi?jkus SchoolFrom The Educator.LOOKING AHEADAs you read this bulletin, you will have justheard the final sound of the shofar as this year'sHigh Holy Days come to a close. Each year, there is much to do as part of the synagoguestaff as we get ready for the holidays - andeach year I fear that in the midst of all thecommotion that I will lose my own sense ofspirituality - and that I will be so busy with themundane details that I will lose the feeling ofrenewal that one hopes for during this time. Each year though, I am amazed that as soon as Ihear the shofar, I lose sight (thankfully) of all themundane and I am able to think and feel withmy heart. To remember what I treasure aboutbeing Jewish and all that Judaism offers me and how blessed I am to be a part of the TRScommunity. When my life feels right and good, Iam able to then turn that feeling to others. I feelstrengthened to again dive into my tasks and Ifind I am able to look at the issues with newperspective. I remember why I do what I do andwhy I love it.November 5 Family Shabbat 7:30 PMGrade 6 singsNo matter how much I love our school and nomatter how much energy I draw from the HighHoly Days, I know that this school doesn'thappen in a vacuum. I"lcmbcrshØNow that the High Holy Days have passed andreligious school has begun, life at TRS hasreturned to its normal rhythm. And yourMembership Committee is hard at work onevents that will help you feel like a part of theTemple community. Last month, our YoungMembers Wine & Cheese Get-Together was asuccess. Fifteen members between the ages of25-35 showed up to talk with Rabbi Bursteinand to make new acquaintances. They lingered, deep in conversation, late into the evening. Wehope to create future programs for our YoungMembers and see the group expand. Thismonth is the first in a series of Zip CodeCoffees, targeting TRS members who live in the22101 zip code. These coffees have been verypopular in the past - bringing together adultmembers from a specific geographic area tosocialize. The 22101 Coffee will be held at 7:00PM. on October 17 at Membership Co-ChairJulie White's home. If you are interested inattending, please call her at 790-5476 to RSVPand get directions. We try to hold three or fourzip code coffees each year, and will let youknow about upcoming events. It's a great wayto meet your neighbors, form car pools, talk toclergy who attend, and develop a new awareness of how many people in your communityare fellow members of the synagogue. Ourcommittee is also in the midst of forming newHavurot. These are social groups of families orindividuals who get together to celebrate andshare holidays, life-cycle events and Jewishinterests. If you are interested in participating inone, or filled out a form long ago and neverheard from us, please fill out the form in theBulletin and return it to Elinor Gruber at theaddress listed. Each Havurah ideally is comprised of six to seven families or individuals. Ifnot enough interest is expressed, it is impossiblefor us to form new groups. Those of us whobelong to Havurot can't imagine life withoutthem! We are also working on developingmethods of welcoming new members into ourmidst. A subcommittee of the MembershipCommittee is examining various ways ofmentoring new members and introducing themto this vast community. As a start, we aresponsoring New Member Shabbat Dinners this12month, November 12, and in the spring. Newmembers receive invitations in the mail to theseevents which are free of charge. Single membersof TRS are also on the minds of our Committee.A subcommittee planned the Singles Discussionand Coffee that takes place this month and isworking on future programming. Stay tuned tothis column for future activities, and let usknow if you have any ideas for programming. And, as the leaves change color and the airsmells so sweetly of apples and frost, take amoment to appreciate all that Temple RodefShalom has to offer you and all that you canoffer in return.Tamar AbramsCo-chair, Membership CommitteeSeeking Seniors for Research ProjectThe Research Institute of the Hebrew Home ofGreater Washington, in collaboration with theNational Institute on Aging, is seeking volunteers to participate in a new research projectconcerning older persons living in the community.
