Jewish High Holidays are celebrated this monthThe Jewish High Holy Days are observed during the 10 dayperiod between the first day (Rosh Hashanah) and the 10th day(Yom Kippur) of Tishri, the seventh month of the Jewish calendar.Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the most important of allJewish Holidays and the only holidays that are purely religious, asthey are not related to any historical or natural event.Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is celebrated the first andsecond days of Tishri. It is a time of family gatherings, specialmeals and sweet tasting foods.Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most solemn day of theJewish year and is observed on the tenth day of Tishri. It is aday of fasting, reflection and prayers. (October 12th)Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates thelanding of Christopher Columbus in the New World onOctober 12, 1492. It was unofficially celebrated in a numberof cities and states as early as the 18th century but did notbecome a federal holiday until the 1937. For many, theholiday is a way of both honoring Columbus’ achievementsand celebrating Italian-American heritage.United Nations Day celebrates the anniversaryof the signing of the United Nations Charterwhich occurred on October 24, 1945.The United Nations is an internationalorganization engaged in the diplomaticand peaceful communication between thecountries of the world.The UN oversees issues like human rights,international security, political freedomsand democracy. Their end goal is the achievementof world peace. United Nations Day is observed onOctober 24th each year.

Research ProjectWould you like to socialize with U of A undergraduate students?We are looking for:1. Individuals aged 65/65 2. Who live alone (in either home, apartment or assisted living facility)3. Who would like to be more socially active(mobility impairments and home-bound residents accepted4. Able to meet with undergraduate students for 8 weeks(2 hours per week)-we can come to you.Would you like to learn how to use Facebook?We are looking for:1. Individuals aged 65/65 2. Who live alone (in either home, apartment or assisted living facility)3. Who would like to be more socially active(mobility impairments and home-bound residents accepted)4. Able to attend three 3-hour classes (we can come to you!)5. Able to use Facebook for 7 weeks after training (we will providematerials necessary)If interested please come down to the coffee room on Monday, October 3 rd @ 9:00 am.Ruth Robbins, M.A. from the University of Arizona Aging and Cognition Lab will bedoing a presentation on this program.

Medicare’s Open Enrollment period isOctober 15th - December 7thOctober 15th to December 7th is when ALL people with Medicare can change theirMedicare health plan and prescription drug coverage for 2017. If you are enrolledin AHCCCS, you can change your Medicare Advantage plan at ANY time during theyear. Information on 2016 plans will be available beginning in October. Peoplewith Medicare can call 1-800-633-4227 or visit www.medicare.gov for planinformation. If a person is satisfied that their current plan will meet their needsfor next year, they don’t need to do anything.Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also referred to inAmerica as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, isan annual international health campaign organized bymajor breast cancer charities every October to increaseawareness of the disease and to raise funds for researchinto its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.The campaign also offers information and support to thoseaffected by breast cancer.Manager's CornerPlease dispose of trash and recycle responsibly.Management would appreciate your cooperation with the following: Please do not throw loose items in the trash, all items must be in tiedtrash bags. We have a number of localagencies within our community that will be providing great information for you.We are in need of resident volunteers to assist with the intergenerational program.If you are interested in volunteering, please come see me.Line Dancing! Come one-Come all!!! Great fun for all!!!Monday's @ 7:00pm in the multi purpose room.Join us for a fun evening and learn from each other to line dance.Classes provided by Nancy Moore.No partner required!Holiday Gift Program (Be A Santa to a Senior)Home Instead Senior Care is sponsoring this program to try to make sure that everysenior receives a gift during the holiday season. All residents can participate in thisprogram by filling out a gift form which you can pick up at my office.Please try to get them turned in by October 7th or no later than October 14th .The sooner we can turn in the names & wish list, the more participants can get agift this year. Gifts are not guaranteed. Please call me at 722-9963 if you haveany questions.The University of Arizona Aging and Cognition Lab will be conducting a research project withindividuals 65 years and older. If you are interested and would like more information, please comedown to the coffee room on Monday, October 3rd @ 9:00am.On Monday, October 31st we will be celebrating our resident'sbirthday and Halloween with a pot luck.You can wear a costume if you wish. Sometimes I'm on the phone with other agenciesregarding a resident and it's hard discussing personal business when you are standingby my door.
