Why Childhood Obesity?1 in 3 children inthe United States isoverweight or obese1 in 25 Is not overweight or obese Has recess in school Has free time physical activity Drinks 2 cans of soda / day Eats veggies almost every day Won’t develop type II diabetes

Alliance for a Healthier GenerationGoal:To reduce the prevalence of childhoodobesity by 2015 by fostering anenvironment that helps all youngpeople pursue healthy and active lives

Industry Initiative Engaging with companies that have the ability toimprove access to healthier foods and beverages aswell as physical activity for youth and their families Agreements with beverage, snack food and dairyindustries– Created Alliance School Beverage andCompetitive Foods (“Snack”) Guidelines Beverage progress as of 9/08– 65% decrease in soda shipments to schools– 58% decrease in beverage caloriesshipped to schools– 79% of contracts in compliance

Healthcare Initiative The Alliance Healthcare Initiativemarks the first time thatreimbursements have been availableon a broad scale for the preventionand treatment of childhood obesity. Engages insurers, employers andprovider associations in a landmarkagreement to reimburse physiciansand registered dietitians for obesityprevention-related services

What is the benefit?Eligible children have access to at least four follow upvisits with his or her primary care provider and four visitswith a registered dietitian per year. These healthcareprofessionals will work with children and their families onhow to establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Kids’ Movement: empowerMEA by kids, for kids movement inspiring all kids tomake healthy behavior changes and to becomeadvocates for healthy eating and physicalactivity (www.empowerME2b.org)

The Healthy Schools Program Works with schools to create a culturewhere healthy eating and physicalactivity is the norm and not the exception Provides tools and solutions to helpschools become healthier places forstudents and staff Offers schools the opportunity to earnnational recognition for their effortstoward a healthier school environment

The Healthy Schools Program Works with Schools to:– improve access to healthier foods– increase physical activity opportunities forstudents– enhance nutrition education– establish school employee wellnessprograms Through:– access to quality local, state and nationalresources– content-specific toolkits and free onlinepresentations– grant opportunities and discounts

Healthy Schools Program Framework The Healthy Schools Program isbased on a set of best practiceguidelines, developed by a nationalpanel of experts These guidelines, called theFramework, provide the roadmap tocreating a healthier schoolenvironment
