To help meet the uniqueneeds of our student veterans, we arecommitted to providing the best possibleenvironment for veterans to flourish in ourVeterans Centers. Each of our colleges nowprovides academic and career counselingfor veterans and their dependents insafe and social environments. The VCCCD hosted aVeterans Caucus Reception at the annualCCLC Conference. The VCCCD MarketingTeam has created an exciting new logo forthe Veterans Caucus, which will soon bevisible throughout the state.Chancellor Luskin commemorates Veterans Dayat Ivy Lawn Memorial Park with CA State SenatorHannah-Beth Jackson and Trustee Larry KennedyVeterans Day Remembrance CeremoniesDr. Luskin was honored to deliver aKeynote Address at the Ivy Lawn MemorialPark Veterans Day Service on November11. Congresswoman Julia Brownley andCalifornia State Senator Hannah-BethJackson also gave remarks at the event.County Supervisor Steve Bennett attendedthe remembrance ceremony, alongwith many veterans, servicemen andwomen, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troopsand community members. The eventrecognized and honored the sacrificesmade by Veterans through the years onbehalf of our country, and confirmedour commitment to provide the supportservices necessary to help our veteranstudents achieve success in education andin our community.Joint Meeting of the Board of Trusteesand the Personnel CommissionOn November 10, the VCCCD Board of Trustees held its first joint meeting withthe VCCCD Personnel Commission in conjunction with the November Boardof Trustees’ meeting. The Personnel Commissioners for the VCCCD are ChairBarbara M. Harison, David J. Gonzales and James L. King. Michael Arnoldusserves as the Director of Employment Services/Personnel Commission. TheCommission provided a short presentation pertaining to the history and role ofthe Commission. The Commission and Board also discussed the interrelationshipbetween the Board, Commission, and management, with regard to variouspersonnel-related functions. The Board recognized outgoing CommissionerDavid Gonzales for his 12 years of service on the Commission.2VETERANS - continued from page 1life, financial aid, job search skills, transferand study skills, and referrals to VA andcommunity agencies.The VCCCD Veterans Centers assist with vitalveteran student needs, such as psychosocialadjustment, development of college survivalskills, student success courses, and activitiestailored for veterans and their dependents.These include individual counseling, helpdeveloping educational plans, new veteranstudent orientation and assessment, andworkshops on student retention and success.The Oxnard College staff also works withveterans and active duty military personnelat Port Hueneme Naval Base and PointMugu Air Force Base. Fifteen Ventura Collegeveteran students received scholarships inSpring 2015. The Ventura College Center hasestablished an internship in collaborationwith the USC School of Social Work. With acounselor and staff available to assist withpaper work, the Moorpark College centerworks closely with the health center tosupport veteran students, including a diverseadvisory staff of faculty, classified employeesand administrators. McKayArea 2Trustee Larry KennedyArea 3Trustee Blum has been on our Board of Trusteessince 2006, and has more than 35 years ofexperience in education, starting with teachingAdult Education, High School Social Studies,and Physical Education, and as a Cross-Countryand Track & Field coach at Buena High schoolfor 22 years. He has also served as an EducationLaw professor for California Lutheran Universityand Vanguard University. Trustee Blum receiveda Bachelor of Arts Degree in History, a CaliforniaTeaching Credential, and a Master’s Degree inEducation from California Lutheran University,and a Juris Doctor from the Ventura College ofLaw. He has been a member of the CaliforniaState Bar since 2006. Trustee Blum is currently amember of the California Community CollegeTrustee State Board and is the Treasurer of theVentura County Schools Association. A longdistance runner, Trustee Blum has run a halfmarathon in 1:06, held the American Recordfor the Men’s Master’s Road 5K, and was the1995 Master’s Track & Field National Championin the 5,000 and 10,000 meter events. In 2014, hewas inducted into the Ventura County Sports Hallof Fame.Trustee McKay was elected to the Ventura CountyCommunity College District Board of Trusteesin 2010. She works as vice president of MustangMarketing, the oldest and largest marketingfirm in Ventura County. Joining Mustang in early2010, Chair McKay’s unique hybrid of expertisein business management and communityoutreach allows her to effectively help Mustang’sSouthern California clients succeed, whetherlarge national corporations or local nonprofits.Chair McKay’s business career started in 1982in the telecommunications field; then in 1986she and her father founded Strategic Television.After more than two decades in live broadcasttelevision, managing some of the largest andmost complex programs of that time, sheswitched focus to fundraising for educationand nonprofit organizations before joiningMustang. A resident of Thousand Oaks since1972, she has received numerous awards for herdedication and work within the community. Shehas served on the Chico State College of BusinessAdvisory Board, the Thousand Oaks Traffic andTransportation Commission, and various otherlocal boards and committees, including 15months as interim president of the local Boys &Girls Club. From 2004-2006, Chair McKay waspresident and executive director of the ConejoSchools Foundation, and remains an activeboard member. Chair McKay and her husbandDuncan have four children.Trustee Kennedy was elected to the Ventura CountyCommunity College District Board of Trusteesin 2012. Since 2002, he has owned KennedyConsulting Services, a consulting firm that trainsworkforce professionals to improve servicesthrough staff and Board workshops. From 1979until joining the VCCCD Board of Trustees, TrusteeKennedy was a Business Department Professorat Ventura College, teaching Macro-and MicroEconomic Theory, Management and Supervision,Marketing, and Human Resources Management.He previously served as the Director of the OxnardCollege Job and Career Center and as RegionalManager and Job Service Manager with theState of California Employment DevelopmentDepartment. Trustee Kennedy received his Bachelorof Arts degree in Economics at UC Santa Barbara,and his MBA at California Lutheran University. Inservice to the community, Trustee Kennedy has heldleadership roles as President/Board of Directorswith the American Red Cross, the County of VenturaEconomic Development (CEDS), the WorkforceInvestment Board (WIB), Rotary International,County of Ventura Management Council, OxnardCollege Academic Senate, Employer AdvisoryCouncil, Chamber of Commerce, CaliforniaWorkforce Association and the Oxnard CollegeFoundation. He has been on the Ventura CountyRegional Energy Alliance Board of Directors since2012. Trustee Kennedy is a Vietnam Era U.S. NavyDisabled Veteran, who is descended from 1885 Ojaipioneers. Previously, he represented his communityon the Moorpark City Council, including servingas Mayor of the City of Moorpark. In addition,Trustee Perez currently holds positions with theWorkforce Investment Board, the MoorparkFoundation for the Arts, and the Simi ValleyHospital Foundation. Since 1999, Trustee Perezhas worked as the Project Manager for theCabrillo Economic Development Corporation inVentura. He previously was employed with theLos Angeles Department of Water and Power forover 30 years. Through the years, Trustee Perezhas served his community with the VenturaCounty Civic Alliance, Clinicas del Camino Real,United Way of Ventura County, Cabrillo EconomicDevelopment Corporation, El Concilio delCondado de Ventura, Children’s Health InitiativeSteering Committee, HOME Housing Task Force,Justice and Peace Commission, Archdioceseof Los Angeles, Ventura County Living WageCoalition (Co-Chair), the 2010 Ventura CountyHousing Conference Planning Committee, and hehas assisted the Moorpark Unified School Districtas a classroom volunteer/reader.Trustee Hernández has served on the VenturaCounty Community College District Boardof Trustees since 2000, and is currently theVice President of the California CommunityCollege Latino Trustees Association. He is alifelong Ventura County and Oxnard resident.He graduated from Rio Mesa High School andearned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economicsfrom the University of California at SantaBarbara. He and his wife Julie have three grownchildren and live in Oxnard, California. He hasserved as Trustee on local school boards forover 25 years including the Oxnard Union HighSchool District and Rio School District Boards.He is a Manager for the County of Ventura withthe Human Services Agency. Trustee Hernandezis a two-time recipient (1992 and 2011) ofthe El Concilio Latino Leadership Award, andthe recipient of the Naval Warfare SurfaceCommand’s Hispanic Achievement Award. He isalso a founding member of the Ventura CountyCommunity Foundation’s Destino 2000 LegacyFund.Student Trustee Maymes was elected to theBoard of Trustees in 2014 and is now servingher second term in office. She is a full-timestudent in the Pathway to Law School Programat Ventura College, and is planning to transfernext fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in PoliticalScience. Trustee Maymes first became involvedin Student Government at Ventura College,which led her to decide to run in the electionsfor the Student Trustee position. After becominga Student Trustee, she decided to participate atthe state level for community colleges, and nowserves as a member of the Advisory Committeefor Education Services for the CCLC and asPresident of the California Community CollegeAssociation for Student Trustees. She has alsohad the opportunity to become involved withinthe county and serve as a Supervisory Committeemember for the County Schools Federal CreditUnion in Ventura. This will providefunds to educators, businesses andcommunity partners to work together forinnovative educational approaches whileseamlessly preparing our future workforcemembers and leaders for jobs. Named“VC Innovates,” the program merges localbusiness, education, and communityrepresentatives to support industry-basedlearning projects, and develop students’“soft skills” that lead to regional jobs.VC Innovates links county educationalsystems to better serve student needswhile supporting the industry sectors inthe California Department of Education’s5Career and Technical Education Framework. VCCCD is part of this 23.4 millionmulti-year grant to serve more than35,000 students in over 200 careerpathways. Ventura CountyP-20 CouncilVentura CollegeEstablishes TrainingProgram for LawEnforcement OfficersThe VCCCD Board of Trustees and the County of Ventura Board of Supervisorshave approved an agreement with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department forcollaboration with Ventura College to provide the Basic Training Academy for lawenforcement officers. The first training academy class offered in collaborationwith the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department began at the end of October withapproximately 40 students.In the COMMUNITYVCCCD Chancellor and Trustees Meet withCitizens Advisory CouncilOn November 2, the Board of Trustees metwith over 30 community leaders and seniorstaff at the Citizens Advisory Council at theVentura County Office of Education ServicesCenter to discuss the state and future of theDistrict. We explored ways in which media,technology, and instant communicationcontinue to transform our county, and howcommunity colleges must respond withinnovative approaches to facilitate studentsuccess in existing and emerging fields.The VCCCD is perfectly positioned to leadchange and partner with local organizationsto boost Ventura County’s economy througheducation and training.Community Advisory Council membersexpressed their interest in topics suchas Dual and Concurrent Enrollment,Media and Technology, STEM, and more.The conversation included exploringand expanding program opportunitiesfor students, outreach to parents andbusinesses, and raising the profile ofcommunity colleges. P-20 fostersthe collaborative efforts of our partnerorganizations to enhance the college-boundrate of all student populations through earlyand consistent intervention. New Senior Leaders at theDistrict Administrative CenterVentura College PresidentJoins Workforce InvestmentBoard of Ventura CountyVentura College President Greg Gillespieserves on the Ventura County WorkforceInvestment Board (WIB). WIB membersare local leaders in business, economicdevelopment, education, labor,government, and other communitybased organizations. The WIB addressesworkforce development opportunitiesand challenges in Ventura County tobenefit employers, job seekers, and youth.“I am working with a group of innovativeleaders within the community who havethe expertise to connect employers inneed with locally trained skilled workers,which keeps our county thriving andcompetitive,” says Dr. Gillespie. “Theseefforts complement VC Innovates grantobjectives to build career pathways.” TheVC Innovates project provides pathwaysfor high school students to move toone of our community colleges and onto employment. A majority of careertechnical education (CTE) occurs righthere in our own backyard at Moorpark,Oxnard, and Ventura Colleges where awide variety of CTE programs are offered.These programs provide our studentswith opportunities to find work thatdevelops into lifetime careers. VCCCDTrustee Bernardo M. Perez also serves onthe WIB on behalf of Cabrillo EconomicDevelopment Corporation.7DAVID KEEBLER, the Vice Chancellorof Business and Administrative Services,and the District’s chief financial officer,oversees fiscal and risk management,business services, and federal/statereporting. Keebler has over 31 years’community college experience in teachingand administration, most recently as VicePresident of Business Services at VenturaCollege. He previously held communitycollege positions in Oregon, Minnesota,and California. Keebler also taught atthe UCLA graduate education programand high school Math and ComputerScience. Keebler holds Master of Artsdegrees in Education Administration andEducation Curriculum, and participatedin the Oregon State University’s Community College Leadership Program. ChancellorLuskin notes, “I have had an opportunity to work with Vice Chancellor Keebler in thepast, and his performance was exemplary. His depth of experience and demonstratedleadership at Ventura College is exactly what we need for District sustainability. Davidhas the vision and skills to help us achieve our goals.”RICK POST is the Vice Chancellor ofEducational Services. Rick acceptedthis position after serving the VCCCD asDirector of Economic Development andContract Education, and Vice President forAcademic and Student Affairs at OxnardCollege. Rick held similar positions atCerro Coso and Bakersfield CommunityColleges, and for West Hills CommunityCollege District Foundation. Rick workedfor many years at College of the Desertin Palm Desert, California, where hewas a faculty member before holdingpositions as Dean of Applied Science &Business, Director of Career & TechnicalEducation, Bond Coordinator, Dean ofResource Development, and Assistantto the President. Rick has taught at CSU San Bernardino, National University, andChapman University. Rick has a Bachelor of Science degree and MBA from CSUHayward, and a J.D. from University of La Verne College of Law. Rick is a veteran ofthe United States Navy. He was appointed to the Cabazon Band of Mission IndiansGaming Commission; and elected Chairman of the Board of the East Valley TouristDevelopment Authority. He currently sits on the Sustainability Commission for theCity of Indio and the Palm Springs USD Foundation Board. Accolades and AcknowledgementsThe Huffington Post Names MoorparkCollege Number 4 in the NationLooking at colleges offering low cost education, good return on investment and highsuccess rate, The Huffington Post ranked Moorpark College as Number 4 in the country.Congratulations to Moorpark College for this achievement and the work they do forthe students of Ventura County.Moorpark College Among Top Colleges in Value-Added RankingsThe Brookings Institution evaluated theObama administration’s new CollegeScorecard database to arrive at value-addedrankings for colleges in the United States.Moorpark College appears among the toptier of two-year colleges. Oxnard College Hosts California CommunityColleges Chancellor’s Circle LuncheonOxnard College recently hosted aChancellor’s Circle Luncheon honoringCalifornia Community CollegesChancellor Brice Harris at “Condor Day.”Guests included Trustees, Chancellors,Presidents, Academic Senates, FoundationDirectors, District/College employees,and community leaders from around thestate. Theday included a tour of Oxnard College, aperformance by members of the OxnardCollege Ballet Folkloríco Mestizo andvisits to Student Services and the Library/Learning Resources Center. Human ResourcesDevelops OnlineTrainingTo increase the number of employeeseligible for service on selectioncommittees, the Human ResourcesDepartment recently filmed their two-hoursensitivity to diversity presentation andtraining. The online training module willbe available to employees to completediversity training before serving onselection committees. This will easeaccessibility to the training and expandthe number of trained employees whocan assist with selection committeework. This collaborative effort broughttogether the talents of the DistrictwideCommunications and Marketing team,Oxnard College film and photographystudents, and the Human ResourcesDepartment management team.FUN AND GAMESPromoting Fitness and Having SomeFun at 2015 Get MOoVin’ 5KBravo to all VCCCD Trustees, employees, friends andfamily members, who woke up early Saturday,Oct. 17, for the 4th Annual Get MOoVin’ 5K Run/Walk and Health Fair, which this year tookplace at the District Administrative Center.Over 170 participated as runners, walkersand volunteers, including several studentvolunteers from Foothill Technology HighSchool. Sandy Mason of Ventura Collegefinished with the fastest time for femaleemployees, while Aaron Sharp of OxnardCollege blazed ahead with the male employees’best time. New District-wide Enrollment AwarenessCampaign Hits the Ventura County Streets,Malls and Internet.In an effort to increase awarenessAND to remind potential studentsthat it’s time to register for classes, thecampaign is off andrunning. You’ll see our graphics on recyclebins, buses, huge mall column wraps andelevator doors. Thousands of postcardsare being slipped into each photo packetat the mall Santa booth AND a loopingvideo is playing to a captive audience aspeople wait in line to talk to Santa at bothPacific View mall and The Oaks mall.
