GENERAL INFORMATIONAccreditationVentura College is one of California’s 109 public communitycolleges and is subject to the legal provisions of the state. VenturaCollege is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schoolsand Colleges.College ServicesAt Ventura College, there is a strong commitment to equalopportunity for all students who choose to attend and can benefitfrom the educational courses and programs. All people are welcometo the college family. Various offices and associations promote theefforts of underrepresented people to become students. Studentsinterested in assistance from these support groups and officesmay make the appropriate contact. The Advantages of a Community CollegeVentura College offers students some very special opportunitiesnot found at four-year colleges and universities. We put studentsand teaching first, with smaller classes and more individualattention from staff, counselors, and instructors. We are the convenient equivalent to lower division universitystudies and provide smooth and secure transfer to four-yearschools.We welcome all students, whether just out of high school orreturning to school after a period of work or home responsibilities.Any student who can benefit from our classes is welcome toattend. We are the obvious “best-buy” in higher education—feesare low, quality is high.College and the CommunityThough Ventura College draws students from other Californiaregions, as well as other states and foreign countries, there is aparticularly strong bond between the campus and the communitieswhich surround it. For decades, Ventura College stood alone asthe only postsecondary institution in the county, and, as a result, the College counts as friends, supporters, and alumni, thousandsof people from across the Oxnard plain and the Santa Clara, Ojai,Conejo and Simi Valleys. In many of these areas, but particularlyin the west county, Ventura College is known simply as “theCollege.’’Today, Ventura College maintains the same strong commitmentswith its community. The performances of College drama, music, opera, dance, and athletic groups and teams draw enthusiasticsupport from the community, as do professional and studentartists who exhibit in the two College galleries. In addition to thesecurricular activities, special noncredit courses and other events, performances, and excursions keep the community focused onthe College as an exciting cultural and recreational center. In 1981, the Ventura College Foundation was established bythe College President and a group of business and professionalpeople from the community. The purpose of the Foundation isto support the goals and services of the College by building andshaping community support.By the end of 1986, the Foundation’s base of support hadgrown to the point where it appointed an executive director, andsoon thereafter dedicated Guthrie Hall, providing a location forcampus and community meetings and activities. The Foundation continues to build support for its ongoingprojects of student scholarships, staff innovation grants, the artsand lectures series, and program support.
