Welcome to the 39th Annual Central California Research Symposium.From its inception, this symposium has brought together investigators, students, and faculty from avariety of disciplines to share the results of their scholarly work. The continuation of these scholarlyactivities in the Central Valley is encouraged by this opportunity to share knowledge with our colleaguesand the community. We hope that all participants will gain new insights from this experience and thatlearning about the interests of other scholars will enrich their academic journey.Abstracts for this year’s event were reviewed and selected for presentation by theSymposium Coordinating Committee. During their review, the committee looked for well-writtenabstracts on topics of scholarly merit.This year, numerous institutions and colleges have provided cash awards to exemplary presenters. UCSFFresno has provided two endowed cash awards for best undergraduate and graduate symposiumpresentations. The American Chemical Society, San Joaquin Valley Section has sponsored a cash awardfor best chemistry presentation. The Office of the Provost at California State University, Fresno hasprovided a cash award for the best undergraduate poster and best undergraduate oral presentation.The Craig School of Business has provided two cash awards for best poster presentation and best oralpresentation. The College of Health and Human Services has provided three cash awards for best posterpresentations and best oral presentation. The Department of Physical Therapy has provided one cashaward for best poster presentation. The College of Social Sciences has provided one cash award for bestpresentation in the social sciences. The College of Science and Mathematics has provided three cashawards for outstanding science presentations. The Lyles College of Engineering has provided two cashawards for best oral and poster presentations. The Educational Employees Credit Union has sponsoredan award for best presentation in Mathematical Sciences.The Davin Youngclarke Memorial Award, inaugurated in 2008 and sponsored by the Division of Researchand Graduate Studies at California State University, Fresno, is awarded to the presenter who bestaddresses a community issue with use of sophisticated and sound research methods. The SiobhanO’Toole Award, inaugurated in 2017 and sponsored by the Division of Research and Graduate Studies atCalifornia State University, Fresno, is awarded to a student whose research represents innovativescholarship and has the potential for long-term impact. In addition to providing three cash awards, theDivision of Research and Graduate Studies at California State University, Fresno has planned andadministered the symposium in cooperation with UCSF Fresno.Presenters and guests are invited to a social hour following the concluding address and student awardsceremony, which will be held in the Alice Peters Auditorium in theUniversity Business Center.These proceedings are published as a permanent record of the work presented. We hope they willstimulate ideas for future work and subsequent symposia.
