ForewordForewordPurpose of the IIT Graduate BulletinThis bulletin describes the academic programs andresources, policies, procedures, and student services ineffect at the time of publication. It serves as a primarysource of information for graduate students, faculty, andadministration. Prospective students and others canalso use these sections to gain an understanding of theuniversity – its history, its campus setting, its campuslife, etc., – as a whole.Changes in programs and policies often occur beforea new bulletin is published. A faculty advisor fromthe student’s major department is the best source forcurrent curriculum information. Updates are also listedon www.iit.edu/graduate college/. The UniversityIIT History and CampusesIn 1890, when advanced education was often reserved forsociety’s elite, Chicago minister Frank Wakely Gunsaulusdelivered what came to be known as the ”Million DollarSermon.” From the pulpit of his South Side church, nearthe site Illinois Institute of Technology now occupies,Gunsaulus said that with a million dollars he could builda school where students of all backgrounds could preparefor meaningful roles in a changing industrial society.Inspired by Gunsaulus’ vision, Philip Danforth Armour,Sr. (1832-1901) gave 1 million to found the ArmourInstitute-and Armour, his wife, Malvina Belle OgdenArmour (1842-1927) and their son J. (Jonathan) OgdenArmour (1863-1927) continued to support the university in its early years. When Armour Institute openedin 1893, it offered professional courses in engineering,chemistry, architecture, and library science.Illinois Tech was created in 1940 by the merger of ArmourInstitute and Lewis Institute. Located on the west sideof Chicago, Lewis Institute, established in 1895 by theestate of hardware merchant and investor Allen C. Lewis,offered liberal arts as well as science and engineeringcourses for both men and women. At separate meetingsheld by their respective boards on Oct. 26, 1939, thetrustees of Armour and Lewis voted to merge the twocolleges. A Cook County circuit court decision on April23, 1940 solidified the merger.The Institute of Design (ID), founded in Chicago byLàszlò Moholy-Nagy in 1937, merged with Illinois Techin 1949.Chicago-Kent College of Law, founded in 1887, becamepart of the university in 1969, making Illinois Institute ofTechnology one of the few technology-based universitieswith a law school.Also in 1969, the Stuart School of Management andFinance - now known as the Stuart School of Business6- was established thanks to a gift from the estate ofLewis Institute alumnus and Chicago financier, HaroldLeonard Stuart. The program became the Stuart Schoolof Business in 1999.The Midwest College of Engineering, founded in 1967,joined the university in 1986, giving Illinois Tech apresence in west suburban Wheaton with what is todayknown as the Rice Campus-home to Illinois Tech’s Schoolof Applied Technology.In December 2006, the University Technology Park atIllinois Institute of Technology, an incubator and lifesciences/tech start-up facility, was started in existingresearch buildings located on the south end of MainCampus. As of April 2014, the University Tech Park atIllinois Institute of Technology is home to many companies.Today, IIT is a private, Ph.D.-granting university withprograms in engineering, science, human sciences, applied technology, architecture, business, design, and law.One of the 22 institutions that comprise the Association of Independent Technological Universities (AITU),IIT offers exceptional preparation for professions thatrequire technological sophistication. The ARC’s mission is to enrich the academicexperience through a student-centered approach to learning. The ARC provides peer tutoring in Mathematics,Architecture, Engineering, and the sciences on a drop-inbasis and by appointment.Undergraduate and graduate peer tutors are availableduring the fall, spring, and summer semesters. In addition to peer tutoring, the ARC also offers exam reviews,workshops, supplemental instruction, group study space,and an OTS computer laboratory including PCs andMacs. Men’s and Women’sTrack and Field compete in several presitgious invitational events.RecreationThe Intramurals and Recreation program offers a variety of fun, recreational, social, and competitive activities for IIT students regardless of experience and ability.Traditional offerings include basketball, volleyball, flagfootball, dodgeball, soccer, and softball. Other sportsinclude, racquetball, badminton, cricket, kickball, andultimate frisbee. Fitness classes are also available forstudents including, but not limited to yoga, Zumba, Salsa8dancing, and Pilates. In addition, we offer open recreational play in basketball and volleyball along with openswimming in the Keating Sports Center pool. Campus Life manages the campus Orientation Program, Freshman YearExperience (FYE) programming, and provides directoversight to more than 100 student organizations, including the Student Government Association and UnionBoard. Other registered student organizations representa variety of student interests in areas such as culture,recreation, academics, and the arts.Career Management Centerwww.cmc.iit.eduLocated in Herman Hall, 111 and 113, the Career Management Center (CMC) offers individual career advisingand testing, résumé critiques, job search strategies, mockinterviews, and labor market and salary data. The CMCalso administers the Cooperative Education Programand the Internship Program, whereby qualified studentsgain experience in their field of study prior to graduation.Both programs are options for domestic and internationalstudents at the undergraduate or graduate level.The CMC conducts a variety of professional developmentworkshops on topics including résumé and cover letterwriting, job search strategies, communications, and interviewing skills. The CMC also hosts biannual career fairs,employer spotlights, and on-campus interviews. Salariesamong IIT co-op students are competitive and helpdefray educational expenses.The co-op experienceimproves employment opportunities upon graduation.Graduate students must meet co-op and internship eligibility requirements.Part-time employment opportunities may be availablefor students both on and off campus. Positions maybe career related co-ops or internships, part-time, orseasonal work. Co-ops, internships, and on campus jobsare posted in the Career Management Center (CMC)NACElink database.Policies for graduate students: Graduate students enrolled in a summer coop orinternship on a full-time basis are not eligible toregister for a course during the summer semester. Graduate students enrolled in a fall or spring coopor internship on a full-time basis, for 9 credits, andwho are in good academic standing (cumulativeGPA 3.0/4.0) may register for 3-6 credits of academic course enrollment, which is equivalent to 15hours of registration. Graduate students who have earned academic probation, from the prior semester (cumulative GPAbelow 3.0/4.0) are not eligible to apply for a coopor Internship, for the first time, until the cumulative GPA is raised to 3.0/4.0.Students interested in and eligible for employment offcampus in their field of study may get job search assistance from the CMC and must attend an Introductionto Cooperative Education and Internship Workshop conducted by the CMC. Graduate students who have earned academic probation, during a semester in which enrollment ina coop or internship is concurrent with academiccourse registration, are not eligible for continuedenrollment in a coop or internship without priorapproval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Academic Affairs.International students (on F1 visa) are restricted to oncampus employment for their first academic year of studyat any school in the United States. After completing oneacademic year in the country, students on an F1 visa maybe eligible for opportunities off campus (only if related totheir field of study) through the Cooperative EducationProgram or the Internship Program. Graduate students, who are completing a 2nd degree at IIT, when the 1st degree was also earnedat IIT, are eligible for a coop or internship, afterone semester of full-time graduate enrollment, in afall or spring semester.
