ForewordForewordPurpose of the IIT Graduate BulletinThis bulletin describes the academic programs andresources, policies, procedures, and student services ineffect at the time of publication. It serves as a primarysource of information for graduate students, faculty, andadministration. Prospective students and others canalso use these sections to gain an understanding of theuniversity – its history, its campus setting, its campuslife, etc., – as a whole.Changes in programs and policies often occur beforea new bulletin is published. A faculty advisor fromthe student’s major department is the best source forcurrent curriculum information. Updates are also listedon www.iit.edu/graduate college/. The graduatedean’s office can also refer students to the appropriateadministrative office for current policies and procedures.The programs described in this bulletin are applicable tothose students who enter Illinois Institute of Technology(IIT) in the academic years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014.Students follow the programs described in the bulletinin effect at the time of their first registration.Illinois Institute of Technology is a multicultural community that values and respects its members. Courses are taught by IIT professors and industryprofessionals with significant working, teaching, and research experience in their fields. The IIT School of Applied Technology offers education and training in a widevariety of formats including degree, non-degree, certificate, credit, and non-credit programs; corporate training;short courses; and seminars ranging from a few hours toseveral days in length. The UniversityIIT History and CampusesIIT’s traditions span more than a century of innovationand educational leadership. IIT came into being in1940 with the merger of Armour Institute of Technology(founded in 1892) and Lewis Institute (founded in 1896).Today, the University has several campuses and offersdegree programs through the College of Architecture,Armour College of Engineering, Chicago-Kent College ofLaw, Institute of Design, School of Applied Technology,College of Psychology, College of Science and Letters,and Stuart School of Business.The 120-acre Main Campus is located three miles southof the central business district in Chicago, and is internationally known for its architecture. The Master Plan ofthe campus and many of its 50 buildings were developedby Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one of the 20th century’smost influential architects.IIT’s Downtown Campus, at 565 W. Adams St., in theWest Loop business district, houses the Chicago-KentCollege of Law and the Stuart School of Business. Establishedwith a gift from CPC International, Inc., the campus hasenabled the University to develop academic programs infood safety and technology. Courses leading to Master’sdegrees and certificate programs in food safety and technology and in food process engineering are offered at thisfacility.Chicago and its EnvironsChicago is world-renowned for its museums andarchitecture, and offers exceptional career and internshipopportunities in all of IIT’s fields of study. The ARC’s mission is to enrich the academicexperience through a student-centered approach to learning. The ARC provides peer tutoring in mathematics andthe sciences on a drop-in basis and by appointment.Undergraduate and graduate peer tutors are availableduring the fall, spring, and summer semesters. In addition to peer tutoring, the ARC also offers exam reviews,workshops, supplemental instruction, group study space,and an OTS computer laboratory including PCs andMacs. The ARC also keeps textbooks, e-textbooks, andiPads with academic apps for your reference.The ARC is located in the northwest corner of theHermann Hall Building, Room 112. Women’s varsity teams compete in cross-country,swimming and diving, soccer, volleyball, indoor trackand field, and outdoor track and field. The University isa member of the National Association of IntercollegiateAthletics (NAIA).RecreationThe Intramurals and Recreation program offers a variety of fun, recreational, social, and competitive activities for IIT students regardless of experience and ability.Traditional offerings include basketball, volleyball, flagfootball, dodgeball, soccer, and softball. Other sportsinclude, racquetball, badminton, cricket, kickball, andultimate frisbee. Fitness classes are also available forstudents including, but not limited to yoga, Zumba, Salsadancing, and Pilates. In addition, we offer open recreational play in basketball and volleyball along with openswimming in the Keating Sports Center pool. Campus ResourcesCampus Lifewww.iit.edu/campus lifeThe Office of Campus Life provides campus programsand events designed to enhance the student educationalexperience outside of the classroom. Campus Life manages the campus Orientation Program, Freshman YearExperience (FYE) programming, and provides directoversight to more than 100 student organizations, including the Student Government Association and UnionBoard. Other registered student organizations representa variety of student interests in areas such as culture,recreation, academics, and the arts.Career Management Centerwww.cmc.iit.eduLocated in Herman Hall, the Career Management Center(CMC) offers individual career advising and testing,résumé critiques, job search strategies, mock interviews,and labor market and salary data. The CMC also administers the Cooperative Education Program and theInternship Program, whereby qualified students gainexperience in their field of study prior to graduation.Both programs are options for domestic and internationalstudents at the undergraduate or graduate level.The CMC conducts a variety of professional development workshops on topics including résumé and coverletter writing, job search strategies, communications, andinterviewing skills.
