ForewordPurpose of the IIT Graduate BulletinThis bulletin describes the academic programs and resources, policies, procedures and student services in effectat the time of publication. It serves as a primary sourceof information for graduate students, faculty and administration. Prospective students and others can also usethese sections to gain an understanding of the universityits history, its campus setting, its campus life, etc., as awhole.Changes in programs and policies often occur beforea new bulletin is published. A faculty advisor fromthe student’s major department is the best source forcurrent curriculum information. Updates are also listedon www.iit.edu/graduate college/. The graduatedean’s office can also refer students to the appropriateadministrative office for current policies and procedures.The programs described in this bulletin are applicable tothose students who enter Illinois Institute of Technology(IIT) in the academic years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.Students follow the programs described in the bulletinin effect at the time of their first registration.IIT’s intention is to act in accordance with all regulationsof the federal, state and local governments with respectto providing equality of opportunity in employment andin education, insofar as those regulations may pertain toIIT. The UniversityCollege of ArchitectureThe program in architecture was established at ArmourInstitute of Technology, one of IIT’s predecessors, in1895. In 1938, the program came under the directorshipof the world-renowned architect and educator LudwigMies van der Rohe. The college is housed in S.R. The UniversityIIT History and CampusesIIT’s traditions span more than a century of innovationand educational leadership. IIT came into being in1940 with the merger of Armour Institute of Technology(founded in 1892) and Lewis Institute (founded in 1896).Today, the university has several campuses and offersdegree programs through the College of Architecture,Armour College of Engineering, Chicago-Kent College ofLaw, Institute of Design, Center for Professional Development, Institute of Psychology, College of Science andLetters, and Stuart School of Business.The 120-acre Main Campus is located three miles southof the central business district in Chicago, and is internationally known for its architecture. The Master Plan ofthe campus and many of its 50 buildings were developedby Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one of the century’s mostinfluential architects, and his students.IIT’s Downtown Campus, at 565 W. Adams St. in theWest Loop business district, houses the Chicago-KentCollege of Law, Stuart School of Business, and Masterof Public Administration program. Campus ResourcesAcademic Resource CenterThe Academic Resource Center (ARC) is a comprehensive learning center with a variety of services for studentsand faculty. Our mission is to enrich the academic experience through a student-centered approach to learning.The ARC tutors in math and the sciences.Undergraduate and graduate peer tutors are availableduring the fall and spring semesters on a drop-in basis. Inaddition to peer tutoring, the ARC offers exam reviews,group study space, and a computer laboratory.The ARC is located in the Northwest Corner of theHermann Hall Building. TheHawkCard is the picture identification card for IIT students, staff, and faculty. Not only does it serve as an ID,it also grants access to buildings, parking lots, computerlabs, Keating Athletic Center, the shuttle bus, librarymaterials’ check-out services, and HawkCash balances.Permits to park in IIT lots are available for purchaseon an annual, academic year, or semester basis. The Scarlet Hawks men’svarsity teams compete in intercollegiate baseball, basketball, cross-country, soccer, and swimming; women’svarsity teams compete in cross-country, swimming, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. The university is an activemember of the National Association of IntercollegiateAthletics (NAIA). For non-varsity athletes, intramuralteams provide spirited competition in basketball, handball/ squash, cricket, racquetball, softball, tennis, touchfootball, swimming, cross-country, and volleyball. The CMC also administers the Cooperative Education and Internship Programs, from which qualified students gain experience intheir field of study prior to graduation. Both programsare options for domestic and international students atthe undergraduate and graduate levels.The CMC conducts a variety of professional developmentworkshops on topics including resume and cover letterwriting, job search strategies, and interviewing skills.The CMC also hosts semiannual career fairs, employerinformation sessions, and on-campus interviews. Individual sessions with a career advisor may be scheduled byappointment at 312.567.6800.Communication Across the Curriculum ProgramThe CAC helps students understand the role of writingand speaking in their academic and professional lives.Both on its website (www.iit.edu/cac/) and in the CACWriting Center, located in Siegel Hall 232, the CACprovides assistance in communication skills for academicinquiry, professional research, and the workplace. TheCAC also assists IIT instructors in developing materialsrelevant to written, oral, electronic, and interpersonalcommunication in discipline-specific courses, particularlyIntroduction to the Profession (ITP), writing-intensive(C-Courses), and Interprofessional Projects (IPROs).The CAC director also administers IIT’s Basic WritingProficiency requirement.IIT Graduate Bulletin 2010-201211

Campus ResourcesCommuter Student ServicesIIT’s commuter student organization, Commuter Students Association, informs commuter students aboutavailable student services and serves as a place wherecommuter students get to know one another and voicetheir concerns. The group also plans a variety of eventsand activities throughout the year.
