THE GLOBAL CENTER FOR FAMILYENTERPRISE AT A GLANCEWith the establishment of competence centers, TUM School of Management continues to increase itsresearch strengths through more intense cooperation with other research establishments and corporatepartners. The Global Center for Family Enterprise (GCFE) is uniquely positioned to conduct research on a broadrange of topics such as succession, strategy, innovation and governance in family firms. In particular,we are interested in understanding better the interplay between the “family” and the “enterprise”. It isof utmost importance for the Center to take an interdisciplinary approach taking into account variousperspectives (e.g., psychological, sociological) to examine family enterprise behaviour. The Center’sresearch is mostly evidence-based and its goal is to achieve academic excellence while also researchinghighly relevant topics. Finally, the Center has a strong desire to create and disseminate knowledge.TRANSGENERATIONAL ENTREPRENEURSHIPIN FAMILY ENTERPRISESTo explore the mechanisms at the family levelthat lead to longevity of business activity andultimately to value creation across generations, the concept of transgenerational entrepreneurshiphas been introduced. Prior research has identifiedsuccession (i.e., the transfer of ownership andmanagement) and business innovation as being ofcrucial importance in ensuring family firms’ longterm survival and value creation. With regard toentrepreneurial behaviour in family firms, previousresearch has argued that they often struggle inretaining their entrepreneurial orientation acrossgenerations and that family members’ attachmentto the business declines over time. In this vein, it isour aim within this research area to investigate theantecedents influencing entrepreneurial behaviourof family firms across generations.SUCCESSION IN FAMILY ENTERPRISESSuccession has been termed to be a critical eventin a company‘s life cycle as many family firmsfail to successfully hand over their business tothe next generation. In fact, less than 10 % ofall family firms manage to survive beyond thethird generation. However, if planned carefully, succession can also serve as an opportunityfor firm renewal as it determines the futureorganizational path for the coming years or evendecades. Within research stream, we are interestedin understanding better what factors encouragesuccessful family-internal succession and how doelements of distributive justice play in.THE FAMILY AS AN ENTREPRENEURIAL TEAMEntrepreneurship research has increasingly shiftedfrom an individualistic view of the entrepreneurto a focus on entrepreneurial teams, therebyemphasizing that the pursuance of entrepreneurialactivities involves collective action. Entrepreneurialteam members are often connected by strongsocial ties such as family ties, resulting in the factthat the majority of businesses around the globeare family enterprises. Research on new ventureteams is still fragmented and has largely adopteda static perspective on team composition. In thisresearch center, we investigate how power isallocated among team members, how employeescan complement the entrepreneurial team andentrepreneurial team dynamics.9
