Submitted for SACSCOC approval pending approval from ACCS and ACHE5.Program Design:Brief Description of Program and Objectives:The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program prepares individuals, under thesupervision of clinical laboratory scientists/medical technologists, to perform routinemedical laboratory procedures and tests and to apply preset strategies to record andanalyze data. The program will include instruction in general laboratory procedures andskills and in basic principles of hematology, medical microbiology, immunohematology,immunology, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis.Program Objectives:Graduation/Completion RateAt least 70% of students who begin thirdsemester will complete and graduate.National Certification Exam PassRateAt least 75% of students who attempt thenational certification exam will pass.EmploymentAt least 70% of program graduates will beemployed in the field within three months ofgraduation.At least 70% of graduates will consent that theyProgram Graduates Satisfaction possess entry level competencies necessary toperform routine clinical lab testing.Employer Satisfaction6.At least 70% of employers will consentgraduates possess entry levelcompetencies necessary to perform routineclinical lab testing.Program Design (continued):a.Proposed delivery format (In-person, online, hybrid): All MLT programcourses will use a traditional classroom delivery. The MLT program will seek accreditation by the National AccreditingAgency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). This accreditingagency is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department ofEducation (USDE) and the Council for Higher EducationAccreditation (CHEA). NAACLS grants specialized accreditationstatus to qualified entry-level education programs for medicallaboratory technicians. Having this accreditation will allow studentsto obtain a national certification.e.Will the curriculum require work-based or experiential learning (internship,practicum, etc.)? If yes, please explain.The MLT program will require students to complete practicum componentsat clinical sites.f.Will the program be designed to meet educational requirements licensureand/or certification required for entry-level employment? The addition of a MLT program will provide students with additionaloptions in healthcare career to meet Alabama’s growing workforce needs.General education courses required for the AAS degree in the MLT programare readily available to students seeking this degree and are very similar to thegeneral education requirements of the College’s other Allied Health programs.b. Will this program replace any existing programs or specializations, options, orconcentrations within existing programs? What is the primary methodology you will use to determine the level of studentdemand for this program? (Survey of current or former students, enrollments inexisting programs or courses)The College will conduct a student interest survey that will be administered tostudents enrolled in the general education courses that are included in the MLTcurriculum, current and former Medical Assisting/Phlebotomy Option students,and students that have selected the Associates in Science degree plan.b. What is the primary methodology you will use to determine state need for thisprogram? (Labor market information, expert market analysis, state or regionaleconomic development strategy)Primarily, TSCC gained awareness of the need for a local MLT program fromour healthcare industry partners. In addition to those requests, we will use datafrom the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook,employer surveys, and Alabama’s “In-Demand Occupations List” to support theproposal for an MLT program at TSCC.NISP Revised 8/20/204
