Branch,PresidentACCREDITATIONACCREDITATION STATEMENTCoastal Alabama Community College is a result of the consolidation of Coastal Alabama Community College, Alabama Southern CommunityCollege and Jefferson Davis Community College. On December 6, 2016, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission onColleges voted to approve the consolidation and acknowledge the institution’s intent to seek accreditation. Each of the former institutionswas accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur,Georgia, 30033, Telephone number 404-679-4501) to award Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science Degrees and Certificates. The three-fold purpose for publishing the Commission’s access and contact number is to enable interested constituents (1) to learn about the accreditation status of the institution, (2) to file a third-party comment at the time of the institution’s decennialreview, or (3) to file a complaint against the institution for alleged non-compliance with a standard or requirement. The accreditation ofCoastal Alabama Community College is anticipated at the SACSCOC December 2017 Annual Meeting. ThisAct, with which the institution fully complies, was designed to protect the privacy of education records, to establish the right ofstudents to inspect and review their education records, and to provide guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleadingdata through informal and formal hearings. The Alabama CommunityCollege System consists of twenty-three comprehensivecommunity colleges, and technical colleges; MarionMilitary Institute; and the Alabama Technology Network, anextensive workforce development initiative.Coastal Alabama Community College, located in Baldwin,Monroe, Clarke, Choctaw, and Escambia Counties in southAlabama, has campuses located in Bay Minette, Atmore,the Academy at the Fairhope Airport, Brewton, Fairhope,Gulf Shores, Monroeville, Thomasville, Gilbertown,Jackson, the Life Tech Center, the North Baldwin Centerfor Technology, the South Baldwin Center for Technology,Fountain, and Holman. The Bay Minette campus is theregional administrative campus.The former Faulkner State Community College was one ofthe 13 original two-year colleges created by an act of theAlabama Legislature in 1963 and has undergone severaltransitions and name changes in its lifetime. For the firstfew months of operation, it was called Bay Minette StateJunior College, but in early 1966, the Board of Trusteesnamed the College William Lowndes Yancey State JuniorCollege in honor of a pre-Civil War statesman and educator.In 1970, the name changed to James H. Faulkner JuniorCollege to honor Mr. James H. Faulkner, a prominent citizenof Baldwin County. The College name was changed again bythe Board of Trustees in August 1992, to Faulkner StateCommunity College to more accurately reflect its missionand purpose. The College name was changed again by theBoard of Trustees on December 14, 2016, and CoastalAlabama was formed through the consolidation of AlabamaSouthern Community College, Faulkner State CommunityCollege and Jefferson Davis Community College effectiveJanuary 11, 2017.The former Faulkner State began offering courses atthe Fairhope site in 1970, and in 1975, the College addeda permanent staff, student services, and expandedofferings of programs and services to the community. TheFairhope Campus has been housed both at the FairhopeHigh School and at the old Fairhope Library building. In 1987,the present Fairhope site was acquired. Originally the homeof the Marietta Johnson School of Organic Education,the Fairhope site was entered in the National Register ofHistoric Places by the United States Department of Interioron July 1, 1988. In 1985, the College opened a site in Foleyand moved to the present Gulf Shores Campus in 1993.The City of Gulf Shores built the facility for the College onland donated by the Meyer family.The former Alabama Southern Community College wascreated in 1991 by the merger of two existing colleges inMonroeville and Thomasville. Patrick Henry State JuniorCollege in Monroeville and Hobson State Technical Collegein Thomasville were both created through Act No. 93 of theAlabama Legislature in 1963. 2017The Jackson Site of Coastal Alabama was establishedin 1975 and is located in the north wing of Jackson MiddleSchool. This location is primarily an evening campus, withtwo classrooms, a computer lab, and administrative offices.The Gilbertown Campus of Coastal Alabama wasestablished in 1977 and offers a wide range of day andevening classes. Construction was completed in fall 2004on a new Gilbertown library facility, which is available for thepublic to use as well as students.Coastal Alabama Community College’s Alabama Centerfor Literary Arts in Monroeville hosts the annual AlabamaWriters Symposium, which awards the Harper Lee Awardfor Alabama’s Most Distinguished Writer of the Year.The Bay Minette Campus of Coastal Alabama is home tothe Sun Chiefs athletic teams, the Monroeville Campus ofCoastal Alabama is home to the Eagles athletic teams andthe Brewton Campus of Coastal Alabama is home to theWar Hawks athletic teams. Coastal Alabama athletic teamscompete in the Alabama Community College Conference(ACCC) and the National Junior College Athletic Association(NJCAA).Coastal Alabama Community College serves a currentcombined enrollment of more than 10,000 students acrossall fifteen locations.Dr. Gary L.
