Welcome & IntroductionDear Chamber Members,Dear Chamber Members,As I sat down to write this article, I started thinking about mygoals for 2014. My mind starts racing every time I think aboutgoals because the possibilities are endless.Another year has passed us by and as the speed of the monthlycalendars get torn off, your Chamber continues to further the interestsof our businesses at the highest level possible.I went back into my past files and reviewed some of my pastgoals- both business and personal. The first list I looked atwas from 2011 which included 9 goals I wanted to accomplishthat year. Out of those 9 goals, 8 of them were accomplished. When I reviewed last year’s goals, the results were similar, I hadaccomplished 7 out of my 11 goals. This simpletask of writing out my goals has proven to be veryeffective. It has been an honor serving as the 2013 Board Chair and I feelthis past year continued a long standing tradition of positivelyaccomplishing our short and long-term action plans. I’m excitedfor next year’s Chamber leadership, as once again, the call forvolunteerism has yielded a talentedBoard that will assist the Chamber’s staffin delivering exceptional value to ourmembers. This value proposition laysthe ground work for so many businessesallowing Effingham to be a Downstateleader in economic relevancy. So what are my goals for the Chamber for 2014?There are 3 major goals I’d like to see the Chambertackle in 2014:1. Find ways to engage non-members in theChamber.2. Make plans to get members more activelyinvolved in the chamber.3. Develop an advisory board to work withbusinesses to promote Business Growth. When I was first asked to join the Chamber, I remember thinkinghow can this benefit me? I really didn’t know anything aboutthe Chamber at that time. What I found out was the chamberprovided endless opportunities to meet other individuals. Ifwe could get non-members engaged in the Chamber beforebecoming a member, the results would be tremendous for thatbusiness and the Chamber. The second goal will always be a concern of the Chamber. Wewant our members actively involved in the Chamber. Not everyprogram works for every business. With our new Chamber Mastersoftware, we are able to monitor our members’ activity and usethis information to engage more members. My third goal is centered on business growth. In November of2008, I received a flyer from a company called ManagementSuccess. The headline was “I Don’t Have Any Dough And I Can’tSeem To Grow.” This flyer described every problem I was facing inmy business.Needless to say, I went to the seminar and signed up for theirconsulting program. This company has guided me in becomingthe business owner I am today and I am very thankful for that.I’m a huge believer in training and coaching because I know itworks. I want to see the chamber coaching our small businessesto success and growth. As the 2014 Board Chairman, I’m excited to start this New Year. Each year the chamber grows stronger and stronger developingpeople, businesses and the community. I look forward to thisopportunity. Our economy both nationally and inIllinois seems to plod along but we havesome serious issues to resolve and Ibelieve they center on a lack of Leadershipand Governing. In Downstate Illinois, our biggest problem is adownward trend in losing population. We desperately need a strongemployment base that will energize a population increase for ourarea. The Chamber can provide community and business leaders anassortment of training and business development support so everybusiness can thrive and reach their potential in the most uncertain oftimes. In 2013, we accomplished so many milestones. A few key items were Growing and retaining a membership of 560 towards a final goalof 600 Our sustainability fund, created to help the Chamber weather thetoughest of financial times 3 short years ago, has grown to 22,000 We re-purposed our annual legislative event and met locally and inSpringfield with the sole intent of developing key relationships withnon-local legislators and other Illinois officials And, we hosted our first Effingham County Manufacturers’ Daypromoting businesses to 150 area high school students. Many thanks to Norma, the Chamber staff, and Board whose longhours and dedication help make our Effingham County Chamber thestrongest partner for our members. I urge all of us in 2014 to continueto work together so we can continue to make Effingham County themost economically vibrant community that we can all call home.Kindest Regards,Sincerely,Mark Probst2014 Board Chairman4Bill Teichmiller2013 Board Chairman
