BCCC AT A GLANCEIntroductionServing primarily the residents andbusiness community of Baltimore,BCCC is a State-sponsoredcomprehensive two-year degreegranting college with two maincampuses and satellite locationsthroughout the city. With its broadrange of degree and certificateprograms, affordable tuition, andextensive outreach, BCCC offerseducational opportunities at alllevels to the citizens of Baltimoreand state of Maryland that enablestudents to obtain good jobs,transfer to four-year institutions, ortake short-term training to upgradeskills or acquire new ones.BCCC offers continuing educationprograms such as GeneralEducational Development (GED),which prepares students to take theTests of General Educational Development administered bythe Maryland State Department of Education in order toacquire a Maryland High School Diploma; English As aSecond Language (ESL) training; and Adult Basic Education(ABE), which provides literacy skills. The College iscommitted to enhancing the economic prospects ofBaltimore’s citizens through computer and technology literacyaimed at 21st century employment.The College’s Business and Continuing Education Center(BCEC) works in partnership with local business andindustry, offering contract customized training,apprenticeships, and other industry-related programs both oncampus and on-site. BCCC provides cost-effective, state-ofthe-art employee training and other programs that contributesignificantly to Baltimore’s economic development initiatives.BCCC is both an old and a young institution. The Collegedates its origins to Baltimore Junior College, founded as partof the Baltimore City Public Schools in 1947 to provide posthigh school education for returning World War II veterans.In 1967, the College was renamed Community College ofBaltimore and restructured as a department of the City ofBaltimore. In the 1980s, city and state leaders recognizedthat shrinking city resources made it difficult for the city tooperate a quality institution of higher education. On July 1,1990, the Maryland General Assembly created a newinstitution, New Community College of Baltimore, funded bythe state of Maryland. The College was granted permanentstatus in 1992 and renamed Baltimore City CommunityCollege.Core ValuesBCCC’s core values shape its day-to-day actions andidentity. BCCC AT A GLANCEAccreditationsand MembershipsGraduate Quality AssuranceGuaranteeBaltimore City Community College is accredited by theMiddle States Commission on Higher Education, 3624Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104 (267-284-5000).The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is aninstructional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S.Secretary of Education and Council for Higher EducationAccreditation.BCCC is nationally accredited by the Association ofCollegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) for theoffering of the following degree programs:Accounting, Business Administration Transfer, BusinessManagement, Business Marketing, Computer InformationSystems, Administrative Assistant, Legal AdministrativeAssistant, and Medical Administrative Assistant.The Dental Hygiene Program is accredited by the AmericanDental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.The Dietetic Technician Program is accredited by theCommission on Dietetic Registration of the American DieteticAssociation (ADA). The Surgical TechnologyProgram is approved by the Accreditation Review Committeeon Education in Surgical Technology (ARC-ST) andaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation of AlliedHealth Education Programs (CAAHEP). First, if a graduate of a career program who is seekingemployment does not have a full-time job within 90 daysafter graduation, the College will provide an additional 12credits of coursework and other support services at no costto the student. BCCC AT A GLANCECampus FacilitiesRenovation of the Main Building will continue through 2012.Phase I construction began in Fall 2001. Throughout theconstruction period, Harper Hall will temporarily housevarious offices, classrooms, and student service facilities asthey are renovated. Each construction phase is expected totake approximately one and one half years to complete.Baltimore City Community College has campuses inNorthwest Baltimore, the Inner Harbor, and several Businessand Continuing Education sites. The Business and ContinuingEducation Center is located at 710 E. Lombard Street, acrossMarket Place from the Harbor Bard Building. The LibertyCampus, located at 2901 Liberty Heights Avenue, is situatedon 19 acres. Buildings on the Liberty Campus include theMain Building, Nursing Building, Life Sciences Building,Physical Education Center, Bard Library and Harper Hall.The Main Building, the oldest and largest facility, isundergoing a three-phase renovation—much of which iscomplete and already open—that will make it a state-of-theart instructional, administrative office, and student servicecomplex. When fully completed, the building will house:Student Affairs-Admissions, Recruitment and Orientation,Registrar, Veterans Affairs, Student Activities, the StudentSuccess Center; Financial Aid-Student Accounting, GeneralAccounting, and Cashier; Facilities and Public Safety;Academic Affairs; and the President’s office. It houses state-of-theart mathematics, science, and allied health and life scienceslabs, classrooms, and faculty offices, as well as the offices ofthe William Donald Schaefer Life Sciences Institute. TheNursing Building includes classrooms, labs, offices, the GaareAuditorium, and the Clarence W. Blount Child DevelopmentCenter. The campus also includes the Bard Library and thePhysical Education Center (PEC). When not scheduled forregular classes, PEC facilities, such as the weight room forfitness and exercise, and the basketball court open gym, areavailable to all students and staff. Both credit andnon-credit courses are offered morning, noonand night, six days a week, to meeteducation and training needs at all levels.Plenty of free parking is available with easyaccess to the Baltimore Beltway.
