What is continuous flow?A continuous flow hot water system only heats water when it passes through the unit. It will deliverheated water at a predetermined flow rate, depending on the model, as long as the unit is connectedto power and gas.General principle of operationEach Rinnai INFINITY has a number ofcomponents that control the water temperatureand water flow. These are:They do this by preheating the incoming waterthrough the transfer of heat from the exhaustgas, which in a standard unit would otherwisebe wasted. Water then flows to the primary heat exchangerand is heated. as the water is alreadypreheated it uses less gas to reach the requiredtemperature.PCB (onboard computer)water flow control valvewater flow sensormodulating gas valveoutlet water temperature sensorWhen a tap is turned on the unit senses theneed to start. The combustion fan starts, ignition begins (electronic requiring electricity),and the gas valve opens. Once the flame isestablished the appliance will heat the waterthrough the heat exchanger (as required) untilthe tap is turned off. What is condensing continuous flow? The Rinnai N-Series and EF26 utilisecondensing technology to deliver higherefficient water heaters, requiring less gas tooperate. These water heaters, via a secondaryheat exchanger, unlock energy that wouldotherwise be wasted.Standard continuous flow - generalprinciple of operationStandard water heaterPrimaryheatexchangerExhaust temp.approx 200 ºCHeatexchangerModulatinggas valveSecondary latentheat exchangerPrimaryheatexchangerExhaust temp.approx 60 ºC91%efficiencyPCBCombustionfan80%efficiencyEF26 Condensing water C230-240 VHot wateroutletWater inletGasWater flow sensorWater control nectionsPlease noteThe N-Series models utilise the latest condensing technology. The way they operate differs from the EF26 shownabove. The latest N-Series models have the highest thermal efficiency of the INFINITY range at 97%.6 Rinnai INFINITY CFHW specification guide 06-21

Model selection for residential applicationsWhen specifying residential applications there are some questions you need to ask when selectinga model or models. Keep in mind future requirements of the building. Water heating solutionsshould be designed to the number of hot water outlets and not the number of people. How many bathrooms? An A16 or A20 unit may be suitable for a onebathroom home, a two or three bathroom homewill need a larger Rinnai INFINITY, or evenmultiple units.Where are the bathrooms and other hotwater outlets in the building?Where are the bathrooms and other hot wateroutlets in relation to where the water heater isto be installed. In most cases it is better to sitethe Rinnai INFINITY closer to the kitchen wherethere is an immediate demand for hot water. Ifbathrooms are situated at opposite ends of thehouse two units may be required.Simultaneous demand? How likely will hot water outlets, such asshowers, be used at the same time?Scenario one: Two bathroom home with acouple who rarely use the second shower—anA20 may be suitable.Scenario two: Two bathroom home with afamily of five who fight for two showers in themorning—a larger Rinnai INFINITY would beneeded. What type of tapware is installed? There is a large range of tapware in themarket, some with very high flow rates. Themain consideration is the type of shower roseinstalled and how many litres it puts out—typical flow rates for showers is around8-12 L/min. This needs to be factored whendetermining the model. To measure the flowrate of a shower, hold a bucket under theshower rose for one minute and measure thewater volume.Location in New Zealand?Ambient water temperatures will varythroughout the country, especially in winter. This is important when determining incomingwater temperature and the temperaturerequired at the hot water outlet, as this willaffect how much hot water the unit can deliver. For more information refer to Appendix 1 onp.38 and the below model selection graph.Model selector exampleDetermine the hot water outlets thatwill run simultaneously and list theflow rates against them.Hot wateroutletTypicalflow rateBathroom 19 L/minWorkedexampleIn the column for the geographical region move down until a numberbigger than your total DEF26 &N-Series9L16131116HD49 (28)EF26 (26)Bathroom 29 L/min9L20171420HD49 (28)EF26 (26)Kitchen6 L/min6L24201724HD49 (28)EF26 (26)Laundry6 L/min*OtherAllow6 L/min26221926HD49 (28)N56 (32)TOTAL24 L* Some washing machines, particularlyfront loaders, have a cold-onlyconnection as they have an internalheater. If you find the flow rate is greater than the figures listed in the tableplease contact Rinnai for advice. Multiple units or an alternative hot water heatingsolution may be required.Rinnai INFINITY CFHW specification guide 06-21 7

Location of a Rinnai INFINITYTo provide safe and effective water heating it is important to adhere to all the relevant gas installationstandards. If in doubt it pays to consult a licensed gasfitter to double check where the unit can belocated.General installation considerationsThe Rinnai INFINITY should be placed asclose as possible to the most frequently usedhot water outlet(s) to minimise the delay forhot water. In most cases it’s better to site theunit closer to the kitchen where there is animmediate demand for hot water. For installations where the distance betweenthe water heater and outlets is considerable,a flow and return system with a buffer tankcan be used to minimise the waiting time forhot water. Alternatively multiple units can bestrategically placed to serve different outlets.Operating noiseSome people are susceptible to low level noise.Rinnai INFINITY units operate at around50-54 dB(A). This needs to be considered iflocating the appliance near a bedroom.Easy accessAll continuous flow water haters must beinstalled so that access can be gained forservicing and repair without hazard or unduedifficulty. If mounting the unit at height the owner mustarrange permanent and safe access, or provideanother means of safe access such as scissoror boom lifts.GENERAL FLUE Min. 300 mmMin. 500 mmBMin. 300 mmMin. 500 mmCMin. 1.5 mMin. 1.5 mDMin. 500 mmMin. 500 mmEMin. 300 mmMin. 300 mmFMin. 300 mm*Min. 300 mm2GMin. 300 mmMin. 300 mmExternal modelsExternal models are designed for outdoorinstallations only. They must be located aboveground where products of combustion canbe naturally dispersed. They should not bein enclosed areas as the unit can suffocateon its own flue gases, which will cause theunit to malfunction. Refer to the general flueclearances diagram below.Internal modelsInternal models aredesigned for indoorinstallations only. Theyare a flued appliance. They may be installedin an enclosure if therequirements ofAS/NZS 5601.1 are met.An enclosure is defined asa compartment, enclosedarea, or partitioned offspace primarily used forthe installation of theappliance.Example of an internalunit installed in acupboard - RinnaiAuckland showroomFor internal units we recommend a 600 mmclearance in front of the unit for servicingaccess. This can be reduced to 50 mm ifinstalled in a cupboard, refer clearances below.External modelsInternal models75 mmmin.G75 mmmin.600 mm min.(50 mm min if in a cupboard)Below eaves, balconies, and other projections, min. 300 mm.From a gas meter 1000 mm. From an electricity meter or fuse box, min. 500 mm.12If the HD49kWe is downrated to a 26 L unit (MJ rating decreases) then the clearances shift to the A-Series / EF26 columnRinnai recommend 1.5 m to give enough clearance for the pipe work, and to safely expel flue gases.8 Rinnai INFINITY CFHW specification guide 06-21

Rinnai INFINITYproduct specification pagesInstant vs continuous flow hot waterIf an outlet is more than 15 m away from the INFINITY there could be a time delay for hot waterof approximately 10-15 seconds. To minimise hot water delivery times, pipe sizing, INFINITYmodel selection and location are important. Consult a licensed gasfitter for more information.Rinnai INFINITY CFHW specification guide 06-21 9

Internal flueing guidelinesThe flue terminal is to terminate in a location so as not to cause a nuisance, in accordance withAS/NZS 5601.Polypropylene flueing CANNOT be used for the HD49kWi / A28i internal water heaters.Flue gases from these units run much hotter than the N-Series and there is risk of theplastic flue components melting.Flue fall back to the water heaterThe flue terminal in all applications mustFALL BACK towards the water heater and nottowards to the flue terminal. The degree inwhich this occurs is dependent on the flueingapplication, refer below. Stainless steel flueing (HD49kWi / A28i)Slope horizontal flues back towards thewater heater at a 20 mm fall per meter todrain condensate. PP individual flueing (N56kWi)Slope horizontal flues back towards thewater heater at a 25 mm fall per meter todrain condensate. PP common flueing (N56kWi)Slope horizontal flues back towards thewater heater at a 54 mm fall per meter todrain condensate.CondensateThe condensate trap (HD49kWi and A28i)or condensate drain (N56kWi) collects anycondensate from the unit and prevents itentering the water heater and causing damage.Condensate is a by-product of high efficiencygas combustion and is mildy acidic. For thisreason copper tube and fittings must notbe used as it will corrode. Instead Rinnairecommends plastic pipe and fittings such asUPVC or PE.Handling condensate for the HD49kWi /A28iA condensate trap kit(FFSSCOND) is requiredfor lengths over 1.5 m. IfDrain tube capflueing is less than 1.5 mthe flue spigot on top ofthe unit is capped usingthe drain tube cap supplied with the unit.Handling condensate for the N56kWiA condensate trap kit is not needed for theN56kWi as there is a different method fordraining condensate. As there is a continuousflow of condensate being produced the unitmust be drained via a pipe to a suitabledischarge point. Refer to the install guide forfurther information.Vertical terminations (all applications)To ensure products of combustion are clearedadequate clearance from the building isrequired. The vertical cowl should have a500 mm clearance from any part of thebuilding. This also applies to steeped andpitched roofs, where the flue cowl should be500 mm clear of the ridge line. An adequateflow of fresh air must exist around the flue cowlfollowing installation.Minimum clearances are shown in AS/NZS5601.1.Flue supportsEnsure the flue is supported independentlyof the appliance by use of suitable clips orbrackets in accordance with AS/NZS 5601.For individual stainless steel and polypropyleneflueing, flue supports are supplied with eachroof cowl and flue pipe. For polypropylene common flueing, fluesupports are not provid
