4. The Amboy Guardian * November 6, 2013LOCAL PERSPECTIVEEDITORIALOff and RunningSome of Them AgainOn the front page of the paper we have a picture of 8 ofthe 9 candidates running forthe Perth Amboy Board of Education. As we mentioned ofthe front page, this photo wastaken at a Candidate’s Forumheld on Tuesday, 10/29/13. Ihappened to hear about thisforum through the grapevine. As you know our paper triesto print as many communityevents as possible. Unfortunately when we found outabout this forum, it was toolate to put in the paper. The AFT gave us plenty ofnotiication of their forum toput in our paper to inform thepublic. We are puzzled that the groupheading the 10/29/13 forumdid not contact us, especiallysince it would have been a freeservice. This is a service thatwe do to help promote community awareness. What was even more puzzling was the inconsistency ofthe question and answer session. There was no consistency when a candidate answeredin English or Spanish. We noticed that a lot of the people inthe audience were connectedin some ways to the candidates.Fortunately, some of the candidates running have had theirviews already stated whenthey ran for this ofice before. Some of the candidates aresitting or former Board Members. Some of these candidates arevery familiar to the viewerswho consistently attend theBoard of Education Meetingson watch them on PA-TV.Several of these candidateshave spoken out at the Boardof Education Meetings andwe have reported on theircomments. We have a 2 hourvideo on the AmboyGuardianwebsite www.amboyguardian.com showing the 10/28/13 forum. If you have a computer anddon’t have time to watch thewhole 2 hours, you can do asearch and put in the candidates name and it will comeup with comments they havemade in past meetings. Forsome insight, check out theJanuary 2, 2013 issue. When you go into our website, you will see a listing.Click on the one that says,“Past Editions.” Scroll downuntil you see the issue mentioned above. You will seesome of the candidates runningnow that were interviewed inthat edition. Some of the questions presented to them in thepast still are hanging over theBoard of Education now. Isn’tthe internet wonderful whenused constructively? Now, it’s up to you. Hereare the Perth Amboy Board ofEducation candidates and theirballot positions:Reyes Ortega 1-IMark Carvajal 2-IBenjamin L. Salerno 3-IDamaris Isales 4-IAnton J. Massopust 5-IJunior Iglesia 6-ISamuel Lebreault 7-IIsrael Varela 8-IAnthony Bermudez 9-IDon’t forget to vote for thefollowing ofices: Governor,Senator, Assembly, Freeholders and Sheriff. Most importantly, there are two very important public questions:Question 1 is to support Veterans to keep money that theyraised funds for to help themselves.Personally for Question 1, Iam shocked that the Veteranswere prohibited from doingthis before.Question 2 is to raise theminimum wage to 8.25 perhour. Subsequently there willbe an increase based on a costof living, if this passes. There have been two sides tothis issue. Whatever you feelings are, it is important to vote, especially on these two questions.Carolyn M. & Katherine M.Published by Amboy Guardian LLCP. O. Nowevery day and night my brothers and my sisters wait to seethe many people from placesafar ile in front of this wall. Many stopping briely andmany for hours and some thatcome on a regular basis. It ishard at irst, not that it’s gottenany easier, but it seems thatmany of the attitudes towardsthat Vietnam War that we wereinvolved in have changed.I can only pray that the oneson the other side have learnedsomething. And more “walls”as this one, need not ever bebuilt. Several members of myunit and many that I did notrecognize have called me tothe wall by touching my nameengraved upon it. The tearsaren’t necessary but are hard, even for me to hold back.Don’t feel guilty for not beingwith me my Brothers. Thiswas my destiny as it is yoursto be on that side of the wall.Touch the wall my Brothersso that we can share in thememories that we had. I havelearned to put the bad memories aside, and I rememberonly the pleasant times that wehad together. Tell our otherbrothers out there to come andvisit me. Not to say “goodbye” but to say “hello” and betogether and even for a shorttime and to ease that pain ofloss that we all still share.Today, an irresistible andloving call summons me tothe wall. As I approach, I cansee and elderly lady and as Iget closer and as I get closerI recognize her it’s Mama.As much as I have looked forward to this day, I also havedreaded it because I didn’tknow what reaction I wouldhave. Next to her, I suddenlysee my wife and immediatelyhow hard it must have been forher to come to this place. Andmy mind loods with the pleasant memories of thirty yearspast. There’s a young man in amilitary uniform standing withhis arms around her .MYGOD he has to be my son!Look at him trying to be theman without a tear in his eye.I yearn to tell him how proudI am. Seeing him standingtall, straight and proud in hisuniform, Mama comes closerand touches the wall and I feelthe soft and gentle touch I hadnot felt in so many years. Dadhas crossed to this side of thewall and through our touch; Itry to convey to her that Dadis doing ine and is not longersuffering or feeling pain. I seemy wife’s courage buildingas she sees Mama touch thewall and she approaches andlays her hand on my waitinghand. All the emotions, feelings, and memories of threedecades past lash between ourtouch and I tell her that “it’salright, carry on with your lifeand don’t worry about me”. Ican see as I look into her eyesthat she hears and a big burdenhas been lifted from her. Onwings of understanding.I watch as they lay lowersand other memories of mypast. My lucky charm thatwas taken from me and sent toher by my Commanding Oficer, a tattered and worn teddybear that I can barely remember having as I grew up .asa child. And several medalsthat I had earned and were presented to my wife. One is theKeep Those Letters Coming! We Love to Hear From You!Combat Infantry Bade that Iam very proud of and I noticethat my son is also wearingthat medal. I had earned minein the jungles of Vietnam andhe had probably earned his inthe deserts of Iraq. I can tellthat they are preparing to leaveand I try to take a mental picture of them together becauseI don’t know when I will seethem again. I wouldn’t blamethem if they were not to returnand can only thank them that Iwas not forgotten. My wife and Mama near thewall for one inal touch andso many years of indecision, fear, and sorrow are let go.As they turn to leave, I feelmy tears that had not lowedfor so many years form as ifdew droops as if on the otherside of the wall. They slowlymove away with only a glanceover their shoulders. My sonsuddenly stops and slowly returns. He stands straight andproud in front of me and snapsa salute. Something drawshim near the wall and he putshis hand upon etched stoneand touches my tears that hadformed dew drops on the faceof the wall. And I can tell thathe senses my presence andthe pride and love I have forhim. He falls to his knees andthe tears low from his eyesand I try my best to reassurehim that “it’s alright, and thetears do not make him less of aman”. As he moves back, wiping the tears from his eyes, hesilently mouths: “God BlessYou Dad”. And I say: “GodBless You Son, we will meetsomeday but in the meantimego on your way. There is nohurry. There is no hurry at all.As I see them walk off in thedistance I yell out to them andeveryone there today, as loudas I can: THANK YOU FORREMEMBERING!Barbara SkokanNight ofComedyWOODBRIDGE - The Woodbridge-Perth Amboy RotaryClub and Colonia Boy ScoutTroop #523 present the 4thAnnual NIGHT OF COMEDY!, featuring Don MacArthur, with Vinnie Nardiello, and hosted by Teddy Daniels. The Night of Comedy willtake place at the WoodbridgeMiddle School, 525 BarronAve., Woodbridge, New Jersey, on Friday, Nov. 15. 6. The Amboy Guardian * November 6, 2013The HUBS Celebrate Their 75th AnniversaryBy: Joe BayonaOn Saturday, Oct.12, TheHUBS had their 75th anniversary dinner. The dinnerwas attended by the members and invited dignitaries. Some of the dignitaries included: Wilda Diaz, (Mayorof Perth Amboy), John E.McCormac,(Mayor of Woodbridge), and AssemblymanCraig J. Coughlin, all ofwhom presented club president, Neil Tuber, with oficialproclamations.Unlike other fraternal organizations that have a branchin every city and state, “theHUBS,” is unique to PerthAmboy.Back in 1938 you had to besponsored by an organizationin order to play softball in thePerth Amboy Softball League.Four friends, Lou Hubner, JimKelly, John Burns, and HapsSpringer and their friends, wanted to play softball butcouldn’t ind a sponsor. It wasthen they decided to form aclub of their own. So on July15, 1938, in a borrowed clubhouse at the corner of Rector and Commerce Streets inPerth Amboy, “The HUBS”was born. HUBS is an acronym for: Honor, Unity, Brotherhood, and Service. In 1939, this group of youngmen having formed a newclub, decided to apply to playin the City Softball Leaguebut were denied for two reasons. One was that they weretoo young and inexperienced. They were told they would beoutclassed. The second wasthat there was room for 30teams and they, (The Hubs),would make it 31. Undaunted, these young upstarts appealedto City Commissioner, Al Waters, who listened to their story and decided to let The Hubsand another reject team in,bringing the City team rosterto 32. A irst in Perth AmboyLeague history. This new young and inexperienced team went on to beatevery team in the league except one, coming in a strongseco
