BLACK HISTORY IN 5TH GRADE In celebration of Black History Month, classroom displays willreflect themes of African American literature, civil rights andequality.Classroom literature and reading materials will include iconicAfrican American figures, important holidays, traditions andcelebrations.Students will be encouraged to read literature that reflectAfrican American History during independent reading timeand self selected reading practices.Teachers will engage in discussions, activities and readaloud’s with their students addressing themes of Africanenslavement, hardships, civil rights, segregation andhistorical figures that made a significant change in the worldand continue to play a strong role in the civil rightsmovement.

BLACK HISTORY IN 6TH GRADE Students will be able to research important facts aboutan inspirational Black American figure and theirrelevance to the Civil Rights Movement.Students will be able to organize their research inwriting form, to explain their iconic figure’s importanceto society and the African American History.Students will be able to create a Power Pointpresentation using pertinent African American Historyinformation as well as facts about their iconic figure.Students will be able to present their Power Pointpresentation to their fellow classmates and schoolcommunity.

BLACK HISTORY IN 7TH AND 8TH GRADEThe 7th and 8th Grade curriculum begins with exploration and the slavetrade and ends with the civil war. American History is full of instanceswhere African Americans have contributed to historical events. It is inthis way that history teachers incorporate “Black History” into thecurriculum. In recognition of African American History, history teachers will sharePower Points and short videos that discuss struggles AfricanAmericans have faced since being brought to America.Students will be able to examine and discuss historical figures suchas: Crispus Attucks, George Washington Carver, Martin Luther KingJr., Malcolm X, Jackie Robinson, Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks,etc., as well as the origins of slavery, the triangle trade, the 54thRegiment from Massachusetts in the Civil War, and African AmericanContributions to the war for independence.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH ACTIVITIESGRADES 5-8 Students will be able to choose from a list of famous AfricanAmericans and create a research paper on them to teach tothe class. This includes who they were, what theiraccomplishments were and why they are important.Students will be able to enhance their writing skills byanswering the following:«« In what ways has the world changed in regards to race sinceMLK/civil rights?Are there instances of poor race relations/inequality in the worldtoday? Examine and explain.Students will be able to create a presentation consisting ofone to two paragraph summaries on the importance of thehistorical figure and how they impacted society today alongwith illustrations.
