Military MedicalAcademy

Background Of TheMilitary Medical AcademyThe MMA was established on March 02 1844, by decree ofPrince Aleksandar Karađorđević and we celebrate thatday as the Day of the MMA. Ever since, the MMA medical experts actively participate in the treatment of injuredand sick in wartime, mass accidents and disasters, as well asin peacetime. Thus, during the Balkan wars and World War II(1912-1918), the Serbian war surgery ranked in the top of theglobal war medicine. Six doctors from the General MilitaryHospital in Belgrade, built in Vračar in 1909, with 400 beds,as the most modern medical facility in the Balkans, participated in the formation of the School of Medicine in Belgrade. In 1930, the Military Hospital was renamed the Main MilitaryHospital, and during World War II became the central militaryhospital of the Supreme Staff of the People’s Liberation Army. The Military Medical Academy got its present name in 1949.In 1981, the MMA moved to a new building, where it still is,and which is the pride of the Yugoslav architecture. The MMAhas always been and remains a military hospital whose doorsare always open to the general population, and that is why itstill enjoys a great reputation in Serbia and beyond. With theirwork and authority, many generations of outstanding experts, big names in the local medicine raised the reputation of thisinstitution to the international level and the present generations, respecting their predecessors, continue to do the samewith ultimate diligence and responsibility.

University of DefenceMedical Faculty of theMilitary Medical AcademyBackgroundThe Medical Faculty of the Military Medical Academy (MMAMedical Faculty) is a high education institution within theUniversity of Defence, established on February the 24th 2011 inBelgrade by the Government of Serbia’s decree. Together with theMilitary Academy it constitutes the most recent state University ofDefence. The MMA Medical Faculty has appropriate up-to-date resources:technical, laboratory, and other specific equipment that ensureshigh quality training. Numerous MMA experts, many of themleaders in the area of their medical expertise, teach at theFaculty; together with the non-teaching staff they form the coreof the Faculty. Relying on the tradition of the MMA which offersdifferent types of education and instruction, besides treatingpatients, the MMA Medical Faculty utilizes all the facilities ofthe MMA to organize different types of training according to thecurriculum. The MMA, an institution with 160 years of tradition has longbeen amply investing into the education of MDs coming fromthe civilian sector to the defence system. The characteristicsof the military organization demanded quality medical corpspersonnel. The Army of Serbia needs MDs who are also goodofficers: those who have completed required military training. Therefore the Ministry of Defence, in cooperation with the MMAand other institutions, initiated a project of educating own MDsto meet the demands of the defence system, by forming theMMA Medical Faculty. The MMA Medical Faculty opened on May the 22nd 2009 inBelgrade, by the Republic of Serbia’s Ministry of Educationdecree (No 612-00-819/2009-14). In accordance with Law onHigh Education, having met the accreditation requirements,it gained a status completely equal to that of all other higheducation institutions in Serbia. As a member of the Republicof Serbia’s community of medical faculties, it thoroughlyobserves all the principles that had been agreed on: the selectionprocedure and other activities carried out in medical faculties inSerbia.

M e d i c a l Fac u lt y o f t h e M i l i ta ry M e d i c a l Ac a d e myTHE AIM OF THESTUDIESThe studies at the MMAMedical Faculty are based onthree key principles. One ofthem is a core that is commonto all medical studies. Theother is a great number ofvarious electives. The thirdprinciple consists of knowledgeand skills that will enableour cadets to perform in theareas of medicine wherepreviously only medical corpsmembers had been involved;in developed countries theseincreasingly involve civilianMDs as well. These areas are, primarily, care of increasingnumbers of people affected by natural disasters or mass casualty accidents, such as those resultingfrom chemical, biological, and nuclear agents, a plight that the contemporary world faces with anincreasing frequency.Up-to-date instruction in small groups, a variety of electives, and involving young peoplein research while they are still undergraduates, enables cadets to start working in garrisoninfirmaries within the defence system immediately upon the completion of six-year studiesand receiving an MD degree. In addition to a secure job, the best of them will soon after theirinternship be able to apply for specializations and continue their education in internationalmedical centres.Throughout theirstudies, each cadethas a mentor toencourage and advisethem, making cadetsfeel at home in anenvironment thatis competitive butsupportive of personaland professional growth. Our cadets have achance to study at oneof the best-equippedmedical institutionsin the Balkans. Duringthe six years of theirstudies they also haveaccess to recent medicalliterature, as well as toup-to-date computertechnology.

Mission of the MMA Medical Faculty is to enable MDs, whose education is made possible by theMinistry of Defence to meet its demands, to perform according to world and European standards, and to be equal with their colleagues in Serbia and worldwide. The global aim is positioning the MMA Medical Faculty as a leader in the region regarding thequality of the integrated academic medical studies and doctoral medical studies.MMA Medical Faculty DEPARTMENTSA department is a unit of the Faculty, devoted to teaching and research, consisting of all teachersand assistants in related scientific areas (academic courses taught at the Faculty). Care of the traumatized requires specificknowledge and skills, that can only be mastered completely during arelevant specialization in the medical profession. However, generalpractitioners also take part in primary care of the traumatized, most often at the site, as well as during transportation. Academicspecialist studies in Traumatology are geared towards them, toenable them to become actively involved not only in immediatecare of the injured, but also in the planning of care in mass casualtyaccidents, and perform competent work in such situations. The curriculum involves 9 obligatory courses, covering the latestepidemiological data, according to which haemorrhage and injuryto the brain are the most common causes of death in the injured. Therefore obligatory courses include knowledge and skills insecuring the airway, primary care of head injury and injury causingprofuse bleeding, as well as the replenishment of the circulatoryvolume. Students choose 3 out of 6 electives. Depending on thechoice, students can acquire additional knowledge in the area ofthermal injury, sports injury to the locomotor system, transportationof the injured, infections in trauma etc.

ACADEMIC SPECIALIST STUDIESIn acute poisoning the main task of a physician is to recognize anacute poisoning using various agents, to provide immediate aidand to adequately prepare the acutely poisoned for transportationto an institution that provides diagnosis and treatment of theseconditions. Besides, within the healthcare system, physicians playan important part in the prevention of poisoning. The specialistsin this area are lacking in the current healthcare system in Serbia.Upon completion of this academic specialization physicians willgain academic knowledge and clinical skills necessary for healthcare of the acutely poisoned.Language of instruction:SerbianThe Medical Toxicology curriculum has been designed to enablestudents to develop abilities for analysis and synthesis of previouslyacquired knowledge of medicine and new specific knowledge inmedical toxicology. Through 6 obligatory courses and 9 electives, out of which 3 are chosen, students gain knowledge and skills thatwill enable them to: recognize toxic and non-toxic exposition; makea differential diagnosis in acute poisoning; perceive potential effectof chemical agents on the development and course of other diseases;choose and apply appropriate principles of pharmacology andtoxicology in care of the acutely poisoned; order relevant laboratorytests and interpret their results when making a diagnosis, performforensic investigation and scientific research in this area; usepoisonous substances databases independently and take part in thework performed by the National Poison Control Centre.Study programmeaccreditation year: 2009MDs who acquire the title of a Academic Specialist in MedicalToxicology will bring their professional performance to a higherlevel, because among other skills, they will be able to timelyrecognize kinds of poisoning whose initial symptoms and signs oftenresemble those of other diseases.Number of ECTS credits: 60Duration of studies:1 year (2 terms)Period: October-JulyEntry requirements: anMD degree, 360 ECTS creditspreviously acquired.Price: 3.500 annuallyM e d i c a l Fac u lt y o f t h e M i l i ta ry M e d i c a l Ac a d e myMEDICAL TOXICOLOGY

This programmeis intended for them. It is designed to provide relevant knowledge andskills, to develop critical, integrated understanding of dynamic phenomenaregulating the effect of drugs on the body as well as of external factors atwork in the process of the development of drugs that can influence thebehaviour and effect of drugs. The curriculum consists of 4 obligatory courses and 4 electives from whichthe students choose 2. This specialization enables MDs to: understand theprocesses that determine the effect of drugs after they have been takenperorally, parenterally or percutaneously; understand the effect of externalfactors, at work in the medicinal substances production process, that canchange the drug’s effect on the body; apply the methodology of establishingqualitatively and quantitatively the presence of medicinal substances inbiological material; analyse the pharamcokynetic data obtained and applythe main approaches to interpreting the calculated values of the mostimportant pharmacokynetic parameters; understand the basic principlesin investigating contrastive biological availability of medical substancesdefining their bioequivalence. The studies also over the basic principles ofGood Laboratory Practice (GLP) in an analytical, clinical-pharmacologicallaboratory, and the local legislation and international recommendationsregulating this area. The most important resource that we can offer our prospective students arethe MMA teachers and their knowledge, valuable experience, permanentprofessional development in the most prominent centres worldwide, andup-to-date insight into latest developments.ACADEMIC SPECIALIST STUDIESRATIONALPHARMACOTHERAPYLanguage of instruction:SerbianNumber of ECTS credits: 60Duration of studies:1 year (2 terms)Period: October-JulyStudy programmeaccreditation year: 2009Entry requirements: anMD degree, 360 ECTS creditspreviously acquired.Price: 3,500 annuallyDaily medical practice cannot be performed without prescribing drugs.New drugs on the market and pharmaceutical companies’ representativesoffering products to MDs in their workplace, advertising materials inwhich, among other information, the effects and advantages of drugstherapy are stated, can often make physicians wonder what is the best fortheir patient. Knowledge of rational pharmacotherapy is needed preciselyto solve such dilemmas. It means administering the drug for the rightindication, in an optimum dosage, in the proper form, over an appropriateperiod of time, at an acceptable price, matching all of this to the individualneeds of the patient. This study programme provides exactly such kind of knowledge, and itenables an MD to estimate, independently and critically, based on relevantliterature, the results of clinical trials of drugs and to make choices ofdrugs according to the individual characteristics of the patient, suchas age, sex, the condition of the liver and the kidneys, the presence ofother disease, current and previous therapy, propensity to heightenedreaction, dietary habits, smoking etc. This programme also enables MDsto design appropriate protocols, including the monitoring of responseto therapy, timely corrections of dosage and intervals, especially in thecases of concurrent administration of two or more drugs, as well astaking measures to prevent or alleviate possible side effects and/or druginteraction. This specialization provides students with knowledge of the basicpostulates of rational phramacotherapy and thus enables students to thinkcritically when considering which drugs to prescribe to patients with mostfrequent diseases in clinical practice.

ACADEMICDOCTORALSTUDIESInstitution:Medical Faculty of theMilitary Medical AcademyAcademic doctoral studies are third level studies to obtain theacademic title of Doctor of Medical Sciences (DrSciMed / PhD).The MMA Medical Faculty of the University of Defence offersacademic doctoral studies in biomedicine accredited for a total of20 students in the following areas:-- Molecular Medicine-- Neuroscience-- Pharmacology and ToxicologyLanguage of instruction:SerbianNumber of ECTS points: 180Duration of studies:3 years (6 terms)Period: October-JulyStudy programmeaccreditation year: 2009Entry requirements: at least300 ECTS previously acquiredin undergraduate andgraduate academic studies, or360 ECTS previously acquiredin integrated undergraduateand graduate academicmedical studies.Fee: 12.000 (three-yearstudies, including the defenceof a doctoral dissertation)Contact / MMA / Dean’s Office:Phone: 381 11 3608-661Fax: 381 11 3608-142Е-mail: fakultet.vma@mod.gov.rswww.vma.mod.gov.rsThe programme of doctoral studies in biomedicine offersprospective students common academic courses in the first yearof the studies, that give them the knowledge and skills to embarkon one of the three modules in their further studies with ethicaland methodological competence.Academic doctoral studies last 3 years i.e. 6 terms. Each term lasts15 weeks. Courses consist of lectures, practicals, pre-exam tests, seminars, discussion groups, buzz groups, research. As a rulelectures take up only 25% of contact classes total. Thus, studentsgain not only theoretical knowledge but also lab skills that enablethem to conduct research. The load of the studies is expressedin ECTS credits. One of the enrollment requirements is a degreein bio-medicine, and 300 ECTS credits gained in undergraduateacademic studies and graduate academic studies, or 360 ECTScredits gained in integrated undergraduate and graduate medicalstudies. Students can acquire 60 ECTS credits in an academic year(2 terms), totaling 180 ECTS credits. The curriculum defines thenumber of contact classes and ECTS credits. In the first year courses in research methodology as well as inbiomedical statistics, informatics, ethics, experimental modelsin medicine and homeostatic regulatory mechanisms serve toprepare students for independent research.Having attended the first year courses and passed the exams, students start the second year of the studies, choosing one ofthree elective areas within which they will complete a doctoraldissertation. Students can learn about the latest developmentsin Molecular Medicine, or Pharmacology and Toxicology, orNeuroscience. In the third term students take general courses inthe area they had chosen. In the fourth term they take specialistcourses related to the chosen area of research. In agreement witha mentor whom they had chosen, students propose a researchtopic and present the outline for their doctoral dissertation. In the third year students conduct the research immediatelyrelated to the doctoral dissertation. The results of the research arepresented to the academic community. They have to be publishedin peer-reviewed international journals on the Ministry of Sciencelist (at least 3 papers in full, at least one paper published in a SCIlist journal). Students can then defend the doctoral dissertationand acquire the academic title of Doctor of Medical Sciences.
