FLUXUS Non-intrusive flow measurement withclamp-on ultrasonic technologyFLUXUS measures flow rates non-intrusively with ultrasound. Clamp-on ultrasonic transducers are simplymounted on the outside of the pipe. The practical advantages are obvious: no wear and tear by the medium flowinginside the pipe, no risk of liquid leakage or fugitive gas emissions, no pressure loss and, above all, unlimited plantavailability.FLUXUS measures the differenceVersatile clamp-on solutionFLUXUS clamp-on ultrasonic systems determine thevolume flow according to the transit-time differencemethod: since the ultrasonic signal that is injectedinto the pipe is carried by the medium flowing inside,a time delay occurs between the acoustic transit timeboth with and against the flow direction. This timedelay can be measured very accurately. The measuringtransmitter calculates the volume flow rate basedon the parameters input for the pipe geometry andthe physical properties of the medium stored in theinternal database.The non-intrusive acoustic measuring method is inertia-free and is characterised by very high measuring dynamics in both flow directions. When combinedwith density measurement, the transit-time difference measurement is suitable for determining thevolume flow rate and mass flow rate of liquids. Whencombined with pressure measurement, it is suitablefor determining the standard volume flow of gases.A particularly practical use for the non-intrusivemeasuring technique is the fact that the currentpower of liquid-based thermal consumers, e.g. heating or cooling systems, can be easily recorded.FLUXUS clamp-on ultrasonic systems allow for theflow measurement of almost all liquid and gaseousmedia – even those with increased inputs of solids andgas ( 10%) or even wet gas (LVF 5%).4As a technology leader in clamp-on ultrasonic systems, FLEXIM has developed two sensor technologies for non-intrusive flow measurement: shearwave transducers for the flow measurement ofliquids and Lamb wave transducers for the flowmeasurement of gases.
