You also can boost itsvalue by making smart home improvements.A Consumer Reports survey of millennialsfound that a “modern/updated kitchen” toppedthe list of ideal home features. And you don’thave to spend a lot to reap the benefits.“For as little as 5,000, you should be ableto add a new suite of appliances, as well asa new countertop and flooring, resulting in afresh, coordinated look. Applying a fresh coatof paint to the walls or cabinets, and updatingthe hardware, can also breathe new life intothe space,” Consumer Reports advises.Whenever you update your home, strive foran open, flexible floor plan—the second-mostdesired feature in a home, the survey found. When it comes to any home-improvementproject, it’s critical to establish a budget beforeyou start. “Things cost more than you expect,”says Dupaco’s Amanda Durham. “Even afteryou get a bid, budget for a little more so you’reprepared for unexpected costs.”For more information or to apply, contactDupaco’s Consumer Loan Department at800-373-7600, ext. 202, or loans@dupaco.com.What’s the Difference?SHome EquityLine ofVS.CreditHomeImprovementLoan Line of credit (available when a memberneeds funds) Closed-end/one-time advance Closing costs up to 350 paid by Dupaco No closing costs Variable rate Fixed rate determined by credit score Interest rate determined by credit scoreand loan-to-value (requires appraisaland equity in house) To be used when there is no equityin house Advances can be used for anything Bids required/funds must be qualifiedhome improvementsdupaco.com/HomeEquityHow to Buy a Used Car with ConfidenceIn the market for a new-to-you vehicle?THERE ARE PROS TO BUYING USED:The original owner will have absorbed thecostly depreciation that occurs in the first fewyears of ownership. And, since the value of the vehicle is lower, youwill save on sales tax and insurance premiums. But how do you find a used vehicle that fitsboth your needs and budget? Dupaco’s AdamDodds offers these tips:FALL 9Before you shop: It’s a good idea to getpreapproved so you can set a budget from thestart. This also gives you an opportunity to reviewyour credit score for a clearer picture of yourfinancing options.Safety first: When you’re considering a usedvehicle, it pays to know the vehicle’s history.Get a vehicle history report from a site likeCARFAX . Take the vehicle on a thorough testdrive, and have a reputablemechanic look at it prior to purchase.Know your options: If you’re in themarket for a newer used vehicle, consider aCertified Pre-Owned car. These vehicles arerelatively new with low miles and have beeninspected and refurbished by the dealership.dupaco.com/vehiclesSUMMER 3

Afterlooking at a handful of houses, the LorasCollege graduates found the perfect one forthem in a neighborhood they knew well.“It’s right by Loras College. I guess we can’tget away from it,” Tom says.Dupaco’s Krystal Frederick knew howimportant every bit of savings would be for theyoung couple getting started. And while theAmeches didn’t qualify for some income-basedgrants, Frederick found other savings for thecouple, who bought their house in April: 1,000 first-time homebuyer grant throughthe Dupaco R.W. Hoefer Foundation. 600 off closing costs through a Dupacopromotion.80/15 loan, allowing the couple to take outtwo mortgages to avoid paying Private MortgageInsurance. The first mortgage was for 80 percentof the home’s value, the second for 15 percent.By piggybacking the loans—an option forqualified borrowers—the couple saves 160in monthly PMI payments, Frederick says.“It was a great surprise to hear about thefirst-time homebuyer grant and be able toqualify for it,” Rebecca says. The savings has freed up the couple’s budgetto tackle some projects. So far, they’ve paintedmost rooms in their three-bedroom house.SCENE IN: 2018“It’s nice to be able to feel like you’reaccomplishing little goals to make the housemore of our own,” Tom says.Since merging their finances, the Amecheshave gotten into a weekly habit of touchingbase on money matters. Say Farewell to Cardholder Signatures on ReceiptsPROTECTION CONNECTIONStore checkout lines should be moving alittle faster. The major card networks—MasterCard,Visa, Discover and American Express— nolonger require cardholder signatures forin-store credit and debit purchases. The onlycaveat: Visa still requires a signature if themerchant doesn’t accept EMV chip cards.“One of the main reasons for removingthe signature requirement was to makein-store purchases faster and moreconvenient,” says Dupaco’s Jim Bemboom. dupaco.com/fraudSignatures are no longer necessary tocombat card fraud. EMV chip cards andother technologies, such as tokenizationand biometrics, offer the best security forcardholders during in-store transactions.Dupaco has been issuing Visa credit cardswith EMV chips since 2015 and MoneyCardSigning offNearly 1 in 5 Americans don’t remember the last timethey used their signature outside of a sales receipt.Source: MasterCard’s “Signature Retirement” surveydebit cards with EMV chips since March2017.
