THERMAL CIRCUIT BREAKERS
KLIXON Thermal Circuit BreakersKLIXON thermal circuit breakers arecompact, lightweight, protective devicesdesigned to repeatedly interrupt short circuitsor extended overloads in applications whichrequire precise, dependable operation plushigh resistance to shock and vibration. Toavoid nuisance tripping caused by harmlesstransient or momentary overloads, thesecircuit breakers feature an inherent thermaltime-lag characteristic. This enablesequipment to operate at maximum limits withcomplete safety.The heart of the thermal circuit breaker is theKLIXON metal disc. At a predeterminedoverload, the heat caused by current passingthrough the disc causes the disc to reverse itscurvature, or snap. This snapping actionseparates the electrical contacts and opensthe circuit.Trip curves provide the approximate time vscurrent characteristics based on the ambient“room” temperature of 77 F (25 C). Shouldyour application require performancecharacteristics beyond the ambient “room”temperature of 77 F (25 C), derating curvesprovide additional data for ambienttemperatures significantly higher or lower thanstandard room temperature.KLIXON thermal circuit breakers areavailable in automatic reset and manual reset.Some manual reset devices offer a switchablefeature whereby the contacts can be manuallyopened to de-energize the circuit. For theautomatic reset device, the circuit stays openuntil the disc cools and returns to its originalcurvature, completing the circuit. For thetrip-free manual reset device, the contacts willremain open until the device’s pushbutton isdepressed to reset the device and completethe circuit.
