Aluminum gratings resist corrosionto give walls, ceilings, ledges, trim, flooring, andspecialty projects a clean, lasting, high-tech look.Interlocking plank grating works especially well inintensive-use areas. In addition to its durability, it iseasy to clean and does not reflect sound like a solidsurface.Architects have often selected InterlockGrating because it protects lights, insulation support columns, wiring, andother fixtures. And, the panels allowauthorized personnel to access thefixtures.United Interlock GratingStrut & Supply, Inc.28005 W. Point (Concentrated) LoadsPoint loads should be disLOADtributed over a minimumof two transverse ribs, regardless of what sizeor gauge plank grating isutilized.Good design practice forpoint loading plank gratingemploys a “foot” plate atthe load point with a mini33mum dimension of 3" x 3".This plate will assure thatthe point load has beendistributed over the two transverse-rib minimum.Maximum point load per rib on 12" x 18 ga. steelplank grating is 185 lbs. As a result, through theuse of the required 3" x 3" “foot” plate, a maximumdesign load for the minimum-dimension foot plateis 370 lbs. Higher loads can be supported by thetransverse ribs. However, larger “foot” plates willthen be required to distribute the higher loads overadditional ribs.Light Traffic AreasFloor areas immediately adjacent to racks, shelves, conveyors, etc., are generally loaded by light traffic.Ends of aisles, single aisles, etc. are further examplesof light-traffic areas. These and similar areas are satisfactorily covered by economical 12" grating.Floor area beneath package conveyors or othermaterial-handling devices are typically subject tolittle or no loading. However, for safety reasons, these areas must be covered. The use of 12" plankgrating in these areas provides an economical floorcovering that can also be used as a load-bearing floorif requirements change.TestingUnistrut is dedicated to the research, developmentand testing of all our manufactured products. TheUnited Interlock Grating System has been tested inaccordance with section 6 of the American Iron andSteel Institute’s (AISI) Specifications for the Design ofCold Formed Steel Structural Members.Tests for allowable loads were performed on productrandomly selected from stock. These tests wererun on simple spans with no end restrictions, overa 2" end bearing. Concentrated loads were appliedacross the plank with a 3" bearing, while uniformloads were applied by stacking narrow strips of sheetsteel uniformly over the plank surface. Concentratedload tests for galvanized steel grating were run onall strength combinations for spans of 2', 3', 4', 5', 6',7', 8', 10', 12', 14', 16' and 18'. Uniform load tests forgalvanized steel were run on spans of 2', 3', 4', 6', 8'and 10'.Concentrated load results are the same for 6" and 9"wide planks.Allowable concentrated loads are found by reducing the ultimate load by 11 2 times the weight of thegrating and dividing the remaining load by two. Thisgives a safety factor of 2. Allowable uniform loadswere calculated by standard formulas from the resultsfound in the concentrated load tests.United Interlock GratingStrut & Supply, Inc.28005 W. Commercial Ave. Barrington, IL 60010Ph: 847.756.4337Fx: 847.304.1891email: CustomerService@strutandsupply.com229 ¼ 6\VWHP¼ 6\VWHPHigh-Traffic AreasMezzanines and aisles for stock storage are typicalhigh-traffic zones. As a result, grating in these areasmust have higher fatigue strengths. High fatiguestrengths are available utilizing narrow, high-strength6" or mid-range 9" width grating.Within these high traffic areas are floor sections thatreceive little or no traffic, but must be covered forsafety reasons. Innovative designers employ 12" grating in this situation. Combining 12" grating with othergrating widths and gauges lowers overall installedcosts for high-traffic applications. 12" Plank Grating is designed to provide an economical lightweight floor surface for light-traffic areas.Maintenance platforms, access ways and rooftopwalkway applications are examples of areas where12" grating is the best economical choice.Index Roofwalk Metal Grating 3ULPH QJOH 6SHFLDO 0HWDOV )LEHUJODVV 6\VWHPDesign ConsiderationsDesigners must consider both uniform and concentrated loads. Design considerations are most criticalwhere loads are concentrated on a small area. As thearea of the application gets larger, the reactions approach those of uniform loads.Although a plank of grating may take a considerableallowable load, there may be more deflection thanthe designer feels is comfortable for foot traffic. Webelieve dividing the number of inches in the spanlength by 240 produces a reasonable deflection.Designing for overloads and future usage is generallya wise investment considering the costs of futuremaintenance, obsolescence and replacement, as wellas the danger of accidents. ¼ 6\VWHPDesign & Testing

4) The planks interlock with positive friction, eliminating costly welding and bolting. 5) Field modifications are easy. Interlock Grating can be cut to size, shape, and angle at the jobsite. 6) Interlock Grating requires fewer support structures. United Interlock distribution network provides local support for complete project administration as
