St. Justin Martyr ChurchTODAY'S READINGSFirst Reading — God has raised the crucified Jesus, whonow pours forth the Holy Spirit upon us (Acts 2:14, 22-33).Psalm— Lord, you will show us the path of life (Ps 16).Second Reading — Our faith and hope are in God,who raised Jesus from the dead (1 Peter 1:17-21).Gospel — Through his words and in the breaking of thebread, the risen Christ made himself known to twodisciples on their way to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35).GOD’S PLANSaint Peter speaks to us twice today. In the firstreading, we hear an excerpt from his sermon on Pentecost; in the second, part of his first letter. Once afrightened, uneducated fisherman who often said justthe wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what he knowsto be true. Everything Jesus had said now makessense. His death and rising were all part of God’s plan, and our faith and hope can be centered on God.Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ walk toEmmaus with two of the disciples. Frightened, sad,and confused, the two of them don’t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard Peter say above: All thishad to happen as part of God’s plan. In the end, thesedisciples recognize Jesus as we are to recognize him—in the breaking of the bread. Copyright J. S. Yet thiswas but one astonishing incident in the extraordinarylife of Catherine of Siena, a truly unique medievalwoman. Youngest of twenty-five children, Catherinerefused marriage and became a Dominican Tertiary atsixteen, cloistering herself at home in contemplativeprayer, austere penances, and mystical experiences, culminating in “spiritual espousal” to Christ. Then, incarnating the Dominican ideal of “passing on to others the fruits of contemplation,” Catherine left hersolitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfortthe dying, and bury the dead. Increasingly renownedfor converting souls and healing bodies, she wassought after to broker peace during civil wars andChurch schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom shecalled “my Divine Spouse,” she died at thirty-three!Four hundred letters and her spiritual classic The Dialogue inspired Paul VI to name her, together with Teresa of Ávila, the first women Doctors of the Church.—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. St. Justin Martyr ChurchApril 26, 2020Pope Francis alone in St. Peter’s Square (photo from Vatican Media)From “Living through the Crisis” by Fr. Federico Lombardi, SJMillions of people are following the moments of prayer led by Pope Francis on TV and social media. We are looking for words and images that meet our expectation for consolation and comfort in times of uncertainty. The Pope’s daily Masses are broadcast live and viewed by many people. Viewers are invited by him to make a “spiritual communion”because they cannot receive the Body of Christ in person. The Mass is the same, but the way one participates in it is different. We are united by the desire to listen to a single message of salvation.Fr. Lombardi writes:Now we see the Square absolutely empty—but the larger assembly is present spiritually, if not physically, and isperhaps even more numerous and more intensely united than on other occasions. At this time, only the Pope canbe present in St. Pater’s Square, as in the Chapel of Santa Marta. However, the Church, the universal assembly ofthe faithful, is really and profoundly united by the very deep bonds rooted in faith and in the human heart. The Square is empty, but in its emptiness, one perceives the very intense presence and the intersection of spiritual relationships of love, compassion, suffering, desire, expectation, hope It is a strong sign of the Spirit’spresence, which holds together the “Mystical Body” of Christ: a spiritual reality which manifests itself when theassembly is physically united and present, but which is not bound and limited to physical presence, and paradoxically, in these days, can be experienced in a stronger and more explicit way.Spiritual communionPRAYER FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERSGod of everlasting goodness, you sent your Son among usto bring healing, peace, and reconciliation to our weary world.Be with all health care workers and their assistantsin this time of the Coronavirus pandemic. As they continue Jesus’ ministry of care, renew them in mind, body, and spirit.Keep them safe from infection and illness, and may Christ’s healing presence flow through themas they serve those entrusted to their care.We ask this in his name, Christ the healer, who is Lord forever and ever.Amen. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.The Holy Father invites all those watching or listening tothe liturgy of the Mass to make a spiritual communion. Heuses the prayer composed by St. Alphonsus di Liguori:My Jesus, I believe that You are presentin the Most Blessed Sacrament.I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.I embrace You as if you were already there, and I unite myself wholly to You.Never permit me to be separated from You.5
