MEDITATIONSunday, March 4, 2018The Third Sunday of LentSee Worship Book 794I . . . brought you out of . . . that place of slavery.(Exodus 20:2)Despite the fact that slavery continues to exist, itshould be obvious that no one has the right toown another person. This was the reason, afterall, for the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt: Godrescued them from slavery. What is not soobvious, however, is the way we can fall into akind of slavery to sin. It’s a slavery that happenswhenever we are trapped in sinful habits thatwe cannot get out of.The good news is that just as he rescued theIsraelites from physical slavery, God wants torescue us from spiritual slavery. The idea of being someone’s slave is naturallyabhorrent to us. No one wants to be owned bysomeone else. This is the same attitude that weshould have when it comes to slavery to sin aswell. No one wants to be under its power. Noone wants to feel powerless in some area of theirlives. As St. Paul has said, we were created to befree, and Jesus came for just this purpose: to “setus free” (Galatians 5:1).So do you want to experience freedom from asinful habit that has some control over your life?If so, here are two suggestions.First, confess your sins each day in prayer.Tell Jesus how hard it is to overcome this sin.Believe in the promise of Scripture: “If weacknowledge our sins,” God will “cleanse usfrom every wrongdoing” (1 John 1:9).Second, pray for the strength to resist. Trustthat God sees your efforts and blesses them withhis own power to help us say no whentemptation rises up within us.We may never stop sinning. But the processof sanctification, which comes as we pray, confess our sins, and seek God’s strength, canhelp reduce our sins. It makes sin lose its powerover us and makes us stronger in our efforts toresist.“Lord, I don’t want to be a slave. Help me to be free.”ENTRANCE HYMN 617Christ is made the sure foundationRESPONSORIAL PSALM 794Lord, you have the words of everlasting life.POSTCOMMUNION HYMN 506The stars declare his gloryCHORAL MUSIC AT THE 11:00 AM MASSKyrie eleison (Missa brevis No. 1)Healey Willan (1880-1968)Expectans expectaviCharles Wood (1866-1926)This sanctuary of my soul, / Unwitting I keep white and whole, /Unlatched and lit, if Thou should’st care / To enter or to tarry there./ With parted lips and outstretched hands / And list’ning ears Thyservant stands. / Call Thou early, call Thou late, / To Thy greatservice dedicate. — C.H.
