Term is often used in anemergency when all hands available are needed to tiemasts, steer, throw water out, release the anchor etc. Theterm is also used to indicate that the involvement of allmembers of a team is required.

Statewide Faculty Recognition Dr. Carolyn Rutledge,director of the OldDominion UniversityDoctor of NursingPractice, was selectedas a recipient of a 2014Virginia OutstandingFaculty Award from theState Council of HigherEducation for Virginia(SCHEV).

University Awards Kimberly Adams Tufts, associate professor ofnursing, and Harry Zhang, associate professor ofcommunity and environmental health, receivedDiversity Champion Awards from the ODU Office ofInstitutional Equity and Diversity in spring 2014. Richard Heller, professor of medical diagnostic andtranslational sciences, received the Frank ReidyAward for outstanding contributions to the field ofbioelectrics. Lynn Wiles, assistant professor of nursing, wasselected as Most Inspirational Faculty Member bySarah Howells, the college’s Academic AchievementStudent in 2014.

College of Health Sciences Awards Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award:Patricia Lynch-Epps, School ofCommunity and Environmental Health. Outstanding Faculty ProfessionalService Award: Elizabeth Locke,School of Physical Therapy andAthletic Training. Excellence in Teaching Award: Donna Rose,School of Nursing.

Accreditations James English, associate professorin environmental health, led theBSEH program to anothersuccessful re-accreditation thisspring semester. The program isaccredited by the NationalEnvironmental Health Science andProtection Accreditation Council. Nathaniel Apatov, associateprofessor of nursing, led the NurseAnesthesia Program study and onsite review.

Faculty Promotions Richard Heller, Medical Diagnostic and TranslationalSciences, designated as Eminent Scholar Carolyn Rutledge, Nursing, promoted to professor Bonnie Van Lunen, Physical Therapy and Athletic Training,promoted to professor Mariana Szklo-Coxe, Community and Environmental Health,awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor Denise Isibel, Nursing, promoted to senior lecturer Janice Hawkins, Nursing, promoted to senior lecturer

Faculty Recognition Richardean Benjamin, associate dean, was elected vice president of the VirginiaNurses Association (VNA) and selected to serve as a member of the OngoingTreatment and Support Workgroup of the Governor’s Taskforce on ImprovingMental Health Services and Crisis Response. Michele Darby, Eminent Scholar and professor emeritus of dental hygiene,received the Esther Wilkins Lifetime Achievement Award at the American DentalHygienists’ Association meeting in June 2013. Steven Becker, professor of community and environmental health, wasappointed by the National Academy of Sciences to serve on a new scientificpanel examining cancer risks in populations living near nuclear facilities. He alsoreceived a 2013 Award for Meritorious Service from the Conference of RadiationControl Program Directors. James English, associate professor of community and environmental health, waselected to the National Association of Environmental Health Academic Programsboard of directors for a two-year term.

Faculty Recognition Katie Ferrara, academic advisor, received a National AcademicAdvising Association Certificate of Merit as an outstanding newadvisor, Oct. 2013 Janice Hawkins, lecturer of nursing, in 2014 received the NationalAcademic Advising Association Region 2, Outstanding Advising Awardand also received the ODU Faculty Advisor of the Year Award in 2013. Dean Shelley Mishoe, elected to the board of directors of theAssociation of Schools of Allied Health Professions. Roy Ogle, professor of medical diagnostic and translational sciences,and Lisa Koperna, lecturer of physical therapy, were selected asEntsminger Fellows to promote and teach entrepreneurship. Bonnie Van Lunen, associate professor of athletic training, receivedthe 2014 National Athletic Trainers’ Association DistinguishedEducator Award (given to one AT educator from its 53,000 members)

Staff and Preceptor Awards Lauren Arlaud, of the School of Dental Hygiene and Lillian Thompson of theSchool of Community and Environmental Health, received the Outstand StaffMember awards from the College of Health Sciences.

Staff Achievements Trina Hawkins completed a second year as Hourly and ClassifiedEmployee (HACE)president, served on the President’s DiversityChampion Award Selection Committee and attended the Virginiastatewide Banner conference. Lillian Thompson was recognized as ODU’s 2014 Hourly andClassified Employee (HACE) Staff Member of the Year at the annualHACE awards ceremony. Laura Thom was honored as ODU’s 2014 HACE Rookie Staff Memberof the Year during the annual awards ceremony. Gordon Ward received a Waste Management Facility OperatorLicense, Class I & III, in December 2013.

Dean’s OfficeDr. Kimberly Adams TuftsAssistant Dean for Interprofessional Education. She willlead the implementation of the recommendations andgoals from the IPE Task Force to further incorporateinterprofessional education in COHS curricula to achieve the corecompetencies of communication, teamwork, ethics and understanding ofroles and responsibilities in the health professions. Dr. Adams Tufts willcontinue to teach courses in the School of Nursing and work with the Centerfor Global Health, in addition to her new role as the Assistant Dean for IPE.She and the Director of the Center for Global Health, along with faculty in thecenter and schools, will develop interprofessional global health experiences asone of many strategies to advance interprofessional education and practice.Dr. Adams Tufts will appoint an Interprofessional Education (IPE) Advisorycommittee that will work with her, the chairs council and the faculty tofacilitate IPE initiatives within the college and our communities.

Center for Global HealthDr. Kathy SimmsResearch Associate, Center for Global Health, received a Ph.D. in Education in 2010from Old Dominion University and a Ph.D. in Finance in 1996 from the University ofGeorgia. She also earned a M.T.A. in Tax Accounting and a B.S. in Accounting, in1988 and 1987 respectively, from the University of Alabama. Previously at OldDominion University, she was a Grant Development Specialist with the Office ofResearch.

School of Community and EnvironmentalHealthDr. Manasi Sheth-ChandraAssistant Professor of Community andEnvironmental Health, received a Ph.D. and M.S. inComputational and Applied Mathematics,Statistics, in 2011 and 2010 respectively, from OldDominion University. Previously she was aStatistician at Booz Allen Hamilton and an AdjunctAssistant Professor at Old Dominion University.

School of Dental HygieneDr. Susan J. DanielAssociate Professor of Dental Hygieneand Chair of the School of DentalHygiene, received a Ph.D. in ClinicalHealth Sciences in 2013 from theUniversity of Mississippi, and M.S.Ed.In Curriculum and Instruction in 1979from the University of Kentucky and aB. S. in Dental Auxiliary TeacherEducation in 1977 from the Universityof North Carolina. Previously she wasan Assistant Professor in theDepartment of Dental Hygiene Collegeof Allied Health at the University ofTennessee Health Science Center.

School of NursingMr. Chad M. DriscollLecturer of Nursing, received a Master of Health Science in 2002 from La RocheCollege, a Certificate in Nurse Anesthesia in 2002 from St. Francis Hospital and aB.S.N. in 1997 from St. Louis University. Previously he was a part-time Simulationinstructor for the Nurse Anesthesia Program and is also the Lead CertifiedRegistered Nurse Anesthetist at Sentara Careplex and Sentara Bayside Hospital.Dr. Adrienne Grant HartgerinkLecturer of Nursing, received a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in2011 for the University of Minnesota, an M.S. in Nursing in 1997from Uniformed Services University and a B.S. in Nursing in 1987from James Madison University. Previously she was AssistantDirector of the Nurse Anesthesia Program at Old DominionUniversity.

School of NursingMs. Amy M. WagnerLecturer of Nursing, received an M.S. in Nursing in2009 from Old Dominion University and a B. S. inNursing in 2006 from Virginia CommonwealthUniversity. Previously she was an Assistant Professorat Paul D. Camp Community College and also anAdjunct Faculty member at ECPI University.

School of Physical Therapy and AthleticTrainingDr. Johanna M. HochAssistant Professor of Physical Therapy andAthletic, Training received a Ph.D. inRehabilitation Sciences in 2012 from theUniversity of Kentucky, an M.S. in RecreationSports Science in 2008 from Ohio Universityand a B.S. in Human Performance and SportsSciences in 2006 from Ohio NorthernUniversity. Since 2012, she has served asAdministrative Assistant for the Commission onAccreditation of Athletic Training Education(CAATE) and Director of Clinical Education, PostProfessional Athletic Training Program as well asAssistant Adjunct Faculty in the School ofPhysical Therapy and Athletic Training at OldDominion University.

School of Medical Diagnostic and TranslationalSciencesMr. Anthony J. PachutaLecturer of Ophthalmic Technology, received a M. A. in Human ResourceDevelopment in 1999 from Webster University and a B.S. in Secondary EducationGrades 7-12 in 1983 from the University of Concord. In 2013, he received a B.S. inHealth Sciences from Old Dominion University and completed the OphthalmicTechnology program at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Previously he was anOphthalmic Clinical Instructor at Eastern Virginia Medical School.Ms. Lori J. WoodAssistant Professor of Practice, Ophthalmic Technology, received an M.S.Ed. and aB.S. in Health Sciences, in 2012 and 1998 respectively from Old DominionUniversity and completed the Ophthalmic Technology Program from EasternVirginia Medical School/Old Dominion University in 1997. Previously she wasDirector and Assistant Professor of the Ophthalmic Program at Eastern VirginiaMedical School/Old Dominion University and an Adjunct Faculty member at OldDominion University.
